Correction: In this video, we conflate a hypothesis with a prediction. In science, a hypothesis is a tentative explanation for an observed phenomenon. It aims to answer: Why does something happen? A prediction, on the other hand, is a reasoned guess about what might happen if we test that hypothesis in an experiment. To revisit our egg example, a true scientific hypothesis might be: "Eggshells inhibit pressure from being released from eggs." We might test that hypothesis by microwaving eggs both with and without shells to see if pressure from the heat gets trapped, leading to explosion. If our hypothesis is correct, we predict that the shelled egg will explode and the shell-less egg will not. These two terms are often blended in textbooks, classrooms, and even at times by working scientists. But they are actually two separate, though closely linked, parts of the scientific process!
This absolute master drops a Jeremy Bearimy reference. This person is clearly a cultured scientific genius. Really showing off the credentials with this one, Doctor.
initially i thought crash course biology is something only n only hank could pull off but dr. sammy here is doing an amazinggg jobbb crash course is such a blessing
If you only learned one thing about science, this would be it. This is why we should respect science. It also teaches critical thinking skills which is, well, critical for all persons living in a complex society where everything depends on science.
Not taking biology in school anymore but I'm still obsessed with this series already! Dr. Sammy is AMAZING and I can't wait for the rest of the series ❤
Sometimes I feel like the concept people struggle the most is how the scientific consensus works and how essential it is for the modern scientific method
5:03. That could be Italians. There's a grape focaccia called Schiaciata con l'Uva: a bread filled and covered with grapes. If you have it warm, you'll be eating warm grapes - and it is delicious!
I'm putting together a list of Crash Course videos for my kids to watch next month. In their elementary school, they don't quite learn everthing I got to when I was that young. Such as in 3rd grade, I learned about dna, rna, how to measure our weight and height, our blood pressure, heart rate, and we went to the StL Science Center for a field trip to do hands on learning. In 5th grade we learned about the scientific method. My kids elementary doesn't teach them til middle school. They learn more about animal science, such as habitats and their environmental needs to survive. I wonder if elementary schools tweak their science lessons based on where they live in the US. Like do areas that are more rural with a lot of wildlife, could that be why they focus more on habitats? I did my elementary learning in a city, not much wildlife compared to rural areas. But I can, hopefully, just get some straight answers by asking our states education department. I was curious why my oldest never got to partake in a district wide science fair in elementary school. They don't have them. 🤷♀️
Hellooooo Crash Course!! I am here to emphaticly proclaim, that a peeled hard boiled egg will indeed explode when put in the microwave. Gotta make sure you have that observation working at full capacity!
Sitting on the floor after dropping one too many samples ::sighs:: Science is tough. The non linear scientific method constantly throws my students off. They especially seem to think that experiments always work...
Just wanted to say thank you for this video! I'm leading a small group of Cub Scouts on a STEM project and I really liked this video to explain the scientific method. The kids liked it too!
Since Dr. Saamy is an entomoligist, it would be great if there is a crash course on entomology too. Arthropods are the most successful phylum in the world since they are the most present organisms in the world other than humans esp., beetles.
There should be a warning that eggs will still explode even when the shell is off, one should never microwave eggs unless scrambled. Many people have gotten hurt by this misinformation in the past, please correct this.
I love How 2 cook that!! I wanted to get on the bandwagon. This misinformation should be changed so no one else gets hurt from the 'sploady eggs. It could really cause bad burns on your face and eyes!! Don't want someone naming Crash Course as to where they got the idea.
*"Science"* ~ I totally jazz hands that with you 🙃 Scientific method is important ~ like the numbers of operations in math. You can figure anything out if you know where to start ~~~~~>💕°•○☆💕
FINALLY Ive always loved the idea of crash course, but had trouble connecting with most of the hosts. Even when it's been Hank it feels wierd seeing him in that setting cos I'm more used to off the cuff silly Hank. You know what though. This guys delivery reminds me so much of the fellah who hosted crash course space. The only crash course that I've seen in completion, and it started my absolute obsession with all things to do with cosmology and beyond. If this guy can do that for biology I'm so here for it. Also PS surely it's time to do crash course space part 2 😊 bring back that same guy too!!!
3:59 Speak for yourself, explosions are cool! And this one was small-scale enough to just be a bit annoying to clean up, or at worst make you get a new microwave.
Sonnet-To Science BY EDGAR ALLAN POE Science! true daughter of Old Time thou art! Who alterest all things with thy peering eyes. Why preyest thou thus upon the poet’s heart, Vulture, whose wings are dull realities? How should he love thee? or how deem thee wise, Who wouldst not leave him in his wandering To seek for treasure in the jewelled skies, Albeit he soared with an undaunted wing? Hast thou not torn the Naiad from her flood, The Elfin from the green grass, and from me The summer dream beneath the tamarind tree?
Scientific analysis is sadly under threat in the modern world especially in America and much of the western world because of the false premise of free speech as a right but in actuality it’s a privilege

I especially appreciated that

Yeah
Thanks!

As an Argentinian, I highly approve of your exaggerated Frenchy pronounciation of "Leloir"
I really like his enthusiasm on teaching. He express exitement here and it is very nice.

Occasionally, peer review and scientific discourse turns into a passive-aggressive Battle Royale 🤣 seriously though, I’m loving these videos so far!

love how y'all are so good at making even the episode 2 basics super engaging!! 🖤 thanks for all y'all do!!
Love the Micro Cosmos microscope product placement! Such a well made tool.
and the cameo from Crash Course Computing too!

... does cut grass smell like watermelon? I've never noticed that before.
Not to me it doesn't but then fresh cut grass makes my sinus hurt lol
Sitting on the floor after dropping one too many samples ::sighs:: Science is tough. The non linear scientific method constantly throws my students off. They especially seem to think that experiments always work...
This is so good! I can't wait for more :) I recently got really into entomology and Dr. Sammy might be my new hero.
Just wanted to say thank you for this video! I'm leading a small group of Cub Scouts on a STEM project and I really liked this video to explain the scientific method. The kids liked it too!
He is the quirkiest presenter whom I have seen at CrashCourse....
AndI love it....
Science may be able to say if we can clone a mammoth, but can it tell me how delicious a mammoth burger would be?
Since Dr. Saamy is an entomoligist, it would be great if there is a crash course on entomology too. Arthropods are the most successful phylum in the world since they are the most present organisms in the world other than humans esp., beetles.
Hey, guys this was fun to learn!:D
Thank you 😊 💓
Okay the modeling halfway through was cute and hilarious. Look'n good, Doctor.

Can confirm - I was lucky I didn't get badly when my out-of-the-shell egg exploded on me. @howtocookthat has a really comprehensive video about it.

I’m a teacher and I love this 😭 keep up the awesome work!!
Love seeing a smart educated brother ✊👍
Great job Dr. Sammy. I really enjoyed this vid. Keep up the great work!👌👌
Awesome. Really got me going at the end there with the mention of philosophy and different methods of "knowing".
I love that shirt!

Love the history aspect.
Outstanding Course Presenter! I love this new series.
I love this series hosted by Dr Sammy! I am moved by your passion. Looking forward to the next one❤
As always, fun to watch. Thank you Crash Course team!
Loving the Jeremy Bearimy ref
Thanks for a very good explanation of how science is donde socially. This also applies in part to other sciences like the social sciences.
I am from UZBEKISTAN🎉
I am preparing IELTS exam😊
Jurassic Park was a good answer, but I'm not sure people universally understand that the answer was no.
Love Crash Course!
Thank you
❤
Lovely information! Thank you 😊
6:44 Muchaaachos…! ⭐⭐⭐
I'm getting a purple rain vibe from this
Well done . Thank you .
I love the videos. Wish I had this before I was near the end of my biochem degree 😂
Where is episode 3 please?
Which watermelons does cut grass smell like? Like the ones you regretted buying? 😂
Mi pais mi pais 🇦🇷💕
I was one time working as a referee for a roller derby game when a banana peel appeared on the track. None slipped on it and spun out though.
Doc, you're the best
you guys forgot the scientific method during covid!
Yes, you've seen the Time Knife. All scientists have seen the Time Knife.
I love your video as well my stibu for my school, and exam as well
You should do an episode of how the German Nicolas of Cusa contributed to the scientific method during the Italian Renaissance.
The pride bee 🐝 is a cool t shirt 👕

Peer review is like democracy; it's not the best system, it is however the least worst.
Nah both are kinda trash.
The only thing that matters is that the theories can accurately predict experiments. Not whether it passed peer review
Today I learned that placing a hard boiled egg in a microwave makes it explode, thanks.
The same kind of person that likes to warm up grapes are the same kind that like Avocado toast.
What is the difference in a Scientific Law and a Scientific Dogma? I'm having a hard time understanding the difference between these.

Me about to start grad school after watching minute 5:14 of the video👁️👄👁️
😤It took me a while to get over the watermelon slander… I had to pause and seriously consider continuing…
Comment for the algorithm!
1&3 awesome
I love it
I have slipped one a banana peel and nearly cracked my skull open only once in my life.
Hey! Jeremy Bearimy!
so science is like jeremy beramy?
It’s less like a straight line and more Jeremy Bearimy

What kind of grass smells like watermelon when cut?!?! Do Americans have different grass than everyone else?
Is that a Journey to the Microcosmos microscope?
Since when does cut grass smell like watermelon? I'm a watermelon farmer, and I cut grass too.
Shoulda used it during the pandemic 🤔
