So thrilling to hear such a brilliant, authentic piece by Maria Theresia von Paradis who DID NOT compose “Sicilenne.”

honest question: how do you know that? and, who DID compose it, if it's a known fact?

According to the latest research findings, 'Sicilienne' was not written by Maria Theresia von Paradis, but by Samuel Dushkin.
this is alll I found, in a sheet music site

@@MrPigeon93 I thought he just arranged it for violin and piano?

I've found no credible sources on any claim. But, to me, the first chord progressions on the Sicilienne are atypical for the period on which she lived; the beginning sounds almost Romantic. It's my honest opinion as a musician, albeit I'm not by any means an expert in musicology.

@@MrPigeon93 and @Mae Stroshane maybe firstly we should mention that her Name originally did not include a „von“ which is often associated with a made-up artist-name. Paradis was her surname, whether or not she used a „von“ herself or not. But the, no offense, maybe it was used by her parents who obviously were eager to showcase her. Secondly there is no exact date to Sicilienne which is a real pity. But Paradis lived and worked beyond the classic era well into the early romantic period, just like Beethoven. She traveled a lot and gave concerts allover mostly western Europe. So it’s not impossible to have been composed by her. Then, Samuel Dushkin being a violonist editor and friend of Tchaikowski‘s puts him into a late romantic position and Sicilienne does not sound late romantic to me… But… you never know. Then, listening to this Fantasie, it has both, many classical parts but also bits of early romantic. It simply was the time.
Another point @ik6non : if Samuel Dushkin arranged this for violin here comes an interesting question (possibly no one can answer) was it written for violin and clavicord/cembalo/piano _in the first place_???
There is a film (not documentary) based on her life from 2017 called „Licht“, I‘ve just seen a trailer and my local library has it as hire DVD, I really look forward to see it. Trailer and critics look promising! I am guessing though there won’t be an english subtitle but maybe I am wrong and it can be enjoyed by non-native German speakers too.
Finally @Perry Mears: lovely play and many many thanks for sharing this - we need more work from female composers showcased, there are way more gems out there and too many fans of ‚classical‘ music who have not got a clue about their existence. 😁👍
(Btw: There should be a film also about the life of female composer Melanie Bonis. Reading her grand-grand daughter’s book about this remarkable woman it would be worthwhile putting this onto celluloid.)

Pretty amazing for a woman in what was predominately a man's world at that time in history. Also, the fact that she was totally blind from the age of six!

Grrrr. Looking at a list of all her works and it’s lost, lost, lost.
