My first day on the air after getting my license I did get a few comments, "No code ham", and "No code extra", etc. It was two years after the FCC had dropped the code requirement. I kept trying, "CQ CQ CQ, this is...". So I got a reply, and the other ham asked, "Is this your first QSO?" I replied "No, sir! I'll have you know this is my SIXTH QSO! And yes, I'm one of those 'No code extras'." He straightened me out. "You are licensed so you have fulfilled every requirement to be a ham. Welcome to ham radio!" And I got more "Welcomes" through the day. Similarly, I joined a net last week, my first time to check in there, and apparently it was their custom for every member there to welcome me to the net. Kinda like walking into Waffle House. But it was a nice bunch, and the welcomes were genuine. This is how it should be.
Very well said and I'm glad somebody put a video out like this. I had my technician license a long long time ago. I got on two meter repeater and would talk to some guys but as soon as their buddies got on they drop me like a hot potato still don't use 2 m now and that was over 30 years ago. Got my code passed and went to HF and never joined there club.
Thank you for commenting. This is the reason i posted this video i dont want people to do this to new hams the hobby is growing and we need a many hams a we can gat. Don't forget to subscribe.
Very well put 👍 I am so very blessed where I am here in Nova Scotia Canada, my fellow operators have been so friendly and welcoming it's crazy. I got licensed back first week of July, and over the summer I decided to call out on the closest repeater to me one afternoon and everyone has been amazing they immediately invited me to their monthly amateur breakfast where the local amateurs in town meet up for breakfast on a Saturday morning, it's amazing to go and hang with everyone. I had one of the older gentlemen drop by the house a while back to see if i would like to attend a local club meeting they were on the way to. I felt so honored they all want to include me. It goes a long way when established Hams are kind to the newcomers.
Just do the practice test on QRZ & you’ll pass. I passed my Technician test.

CW is somewhat different, more often than not an experienced operator will slow down and QSO with someone new.. On air practice makes improving faster and easier.. Lots of new hams are doing the digital modes because of the OF's and are missing out on so much..
yes i would agree cw is different. I am working on my cw some but i need to get into full force and get on the air

@@theinsoutsofhamradio8648 I did CW for a while when I was new to the hobby but to be honest after a while I found it to be more work than I wanted to do.. So yep I am lazy and switched to doing some digital mode stuff and random SSB.. I am going to be 65 in a couple months and still find several VHF contesters in my area who will thumb their nose at my 100w after answering when I call CQ just to remind me that I might be covering up real DX.. Both my sons are license holders and only one is fairly active far more than me..
We're all human, so a-l-m-o-s-t all hams are fantastic at welcoming those new to the hobby; others, however, sadly, need to learn some common courtesy, remembering that they, too, were once new hams...👍🇺🇸
yes i agree. I like to talk to anyone who calls out on our local repeaters that is how you get more and more friends in the hobby. dont forget to subscribe
@theinsoutsofhamradio8648 plenty of other frequency, this could be one of the main reasons, why females feel so let down when they first make contact it's with sad hams.
