Oneglia insieme con Porto Maurizio, dal 1923, è uno dei due centri abitati che formano il Comune di Imperia. Per secoli capitale del Principato di Oneglia, stato indipendente all'interno dalla Repubblica di Genova. È definito dagli strumenti urbanistici del comune come una unità insediativa.
Le due “Imperie” sono entrambe antiche (di fondazione bizantina Porto Maurizio, romana Oneglia), ma hanno avuto storie separate. Si sono anzi addirittura contrapposte fra ’500 e ’700, quando Porto Maurizio era parte della Repubblica di Genova mentre Oneglia si candidava a porto principale del Piemonte sabaudo. Oggi l’unificazione è sancita, giusto in mezzo, da un porto turistico che si progetta di ampliare e da un importante Museo Navale. La produzione di olio d’oliva accomunava il territorio già da molto prima.
L’itinerario si può fare quasi tutto a piedi. Per avvicinarsi però all’irrinunciabile Santuario di Nostra Signora delle Grazie, nell’entroterra, servono autobus locali o un’auto.
Oneglia, together with Porto Maurizio, since 1923, is one of the two inhabited centers that form the Municipality of Imperia. For centuries it was the capital of the Principality of Oneglia, an independent state within the Republic of Genoa. It is defined by the urban planning tools of the municipality as a settlement unit.
The two “Imperies” are both ancient (Porto Maurizio was founded by the Byzantines, Oneglia by the Romans), but they have had separate histories. In fact, they even opposed each other between the 16th and 18th centuries, when Porto Maurizio was part of the Republic of Genoa while Oneglia was a candidate for the main port of Savoy Piedmont. Today the unification is sanctioned, right in the middle, by a tourist port that is planned to be expanded and by an important Naval Museum. The production of olive oil had united the territory long before.
The itinerary can be done almost entirely on foot. However, to get closer to the unmissable Sanctuary of Nostra Signora delle Grazie, in the hinterland, you need local buses or a car.
