Tonight’s song was written on an acoustic guitar in a rented apartment down the street from where I live. It was a strange time in my life. I had just dropped out of college and I was looking to the future with all sorts of doubts and fears. Since then I’ve played it around the world. It feels like a homecoming of sorts: to play this song here at home amidst these strange times.

Probably like many Switchfoot fans, this song was the one that introduced me to the band and made me a fan. Great song and I really enjoy the acoustic version and the hopeful message. Keep on Rockin’ and writing music Jon!

I have a hard time explaining what I do for a living. I sometimes wish I played the role of inventor: purposefully creative, a wizard with notes and words. But in fact my occupation is much more like an archeologist. Always digging. Always sorting. And occasionally I feel that I stumble across something truly remarkable. Like a hidden city buried in the ground, the notes and words seem to have been there long before me- as though the song would exist without my involvement. Or maybe it's more like farming. Preparing the soil, planting, watering, pruning and caring for these ideas hoping to see a bumper crop yet knowing that the outcome is almost entirely out of my hands.
With that in mind, this collection of songs then is something that I can only partly take credit for. Most of my favorite moments on the record represent the times when my fingerprints are the lightest, where my own self-conscious second-guessing is absent and the buried city can speak for itself. I suppose to some extent I'm talking about honesty- allowing a song to be itself rather than forcing your own will upon it. This was a goal not only in the writing process but in the studio as well. Many times on this record we deliberately went back to the first take and the rough draft to find our direction simply because the first response to the song is often the most honest. Your first instincts might be poorly played or incomplete but they were honest.
I am so proud of these songs, like I am proud of my friends or as I imagine a father would be proud of his son. I truly feel like there is only so much credit that be given to the songwriter, for the buried city was waiting there all along.

What a difference a day makes. My husband wakes me up with a cup of really good coffee. We worship Jesus together while he plays guitar. ♥️ His grace is sufficient. I’m blessed.

this song has been extremely special to me and I lost touch with my switchfoot fandom but I’ve found my way back and it means more than ever now.
You guys signed my skate shoes in Virginia Beach, my hometown, when I was a kid playing a free show on the military base I lived on and were the beginning of the soundtrack to my life as a young skateboarder and guitar player. My mind was blown at that concert and I’m just really grateful for you
I remember being in high school and hating this song - it was played all the time on the radio and I thought it was super dumb and annoying. Fast forward a year or two, when I was 17 I met and gave my life to the Lord (after growing up atheist). I remember hearing this song again soon afterward and it totally blew me away - it had a deep and profound new meaning for me. Also, I think the fact that I could understand and appreciate something that I used to think was dumb was further evidence for me at the time that God was real and He really was giving me a second chance and making me into something new. Maybe that’s a bit strange but it was what my 17 year old heart needed. This song still hits me in the feels today. Thanks again Jon for doing these vids.

Have this tatted on my chest. This was the song that introduced me to rock music. Switchfoot expanded my music library from only *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys...the rest is history.
Incubuse's pardon me and this song opened up my alternative rock gates when I was listening to nsync, limp bizket and linkin park. As I lay dying got me into metal too.

I remember being so excited that Switchfoot was going to the 2010 Boy Scout Jamboree when I was little. I have always loved Switchfoot and this song is one that made me want to learn guitar actually. So I did! First song in a drop D. I remember returning to our campsite that night of the jamboree and we were playing Switchfoot songs on an acoustic.
