Ahhh that sweet bonsai zone content in our time of need!
Even my Parrots get excited when I play Nigel's videos 😂
Hey Nigel. I'm a biology student and love trees specifically. Ginkgos are really incredible and unique. They're from an entirely different group of all other plants. They're most closely related to conifers, but even those are far of. This species of ginkgo has also been around for about 100 milion years unchanged, which is crazy. They are neither conifers nor other deciduous trees. I love the progress on this tree
Thanks you, they are a very strange and unique tree, I'm glad they found some and they didn't go extinct!
29:43 "It's just something you have to do...........otherwise you'll never get a nice bonsai tree!"
I come back to this often when I work on my young trees. Thanks Nigel!
Love your natural approach with bonsai, wonderful teacher.
I think watching you do a full repot and root prune is my favorite of all of your formats! If you ever rebrand the channel you could call it "The Root King"! I don't know anyone else who takes such care with the roots, and it's very satisfying to watch for some reason.
Thanks Erik, I really enjoy developing a nice root system, it takes all parts of the tree to become a good bonsai, but a nice root system is the foundation!
The ginko that was in the exhibition looked really nice, dwarfed and balanced, so nice.
Will be interesting to see the evolution of your's!
Greetings from Sweden :)
Can't wait for this years' update on your ginkgo!
The Bob Ross of bonsai. Great video!
Thanks JAY!
Wow...a powerful looking base was hiding under there. That tree will be something special in a few years. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, yes I think it will be amazing.....if all goes well!
Wow, the roots are doing great, what a difference from the first video!
This tree got attacked by borers and it died, I was so sad.
Hi Nigel, thanks for sharing with us this videos in all this moment taht we have , Stay at home take care with COVID-19 . ok?
Haven't watched your videos for 2 months, but now I can binge watch all of them!!!
Thanks Dan, I hope you enjoy them!
Always enjoy your videos with a lot of root work!
Great potential and a bargain. Cute little spruce, also. Your garden is very peaceful, we have lots of young families in our neighbourhood - including my own - so it’s not always possible to enjoy a zen moment with the trees 😂
Thank you, it's nice to have some quiet time, it's very relaxing!
Now THIS is what I love to see!! Cut allllll those roots off! Nice trunk base - can’t wait to see it leafed out!
Ginkgo is looking good. A work in progress. Cute little spruce. I'll be working on a bougainvillea later today. Stay healthy and safe.
Thanks Pat, you too and have fun working on your trees!
How has the tree been going, any update?
I gotta say, its nice to sit and watch your videos while I take my lunch break!
my ginkgo survived summer. your videos are a great help to me and others. Keith Australia
I heard you had a really hot summer, glad your tree survived too!
Just watched the first installment of the ginko and you did a great job cause those roots really grew!!
How is the gingko doing after 2.5 years? I was curious about an update or picture. 😁
Certainly off to a great start. Your philosophy on the hobby is inspirational. Thanks
Thank you Matt, I'm hoping for good things from this tree!
I've got to get me a ginkgo. They are so good looking.
I want one even if it's just the seeds
But it's nowhere near where i live and it seems most online sellers are scams
They are becoming a common street tree in our city, it's nice to see them on my walks!
@@mralabbad7 I grew one from a seed I found in a local park in autumn. But not all ginkos produce nuts only the female ones do. The fruit surrounding the nut smells pretty horrible but you can wait till it rots away or remove it wearing gloves. I just planted mine a 2 years ago in regular potting soil with some plsnts that needed regular watering, kind of forgot about it and one day it sprouted. There is where my knowledge pretty much ends, as I have only tried one seed because the only female tree I know of died shortly after due to a storm. I don't know whether this is the proper way to do it but it worked for me. The tree seems pretty resilient as it survived my sister's poor care during my summer vacation and a few unexpected subzero temperatures. Sadly my little tree has struggled a bit last year, so I'm happy for any advice from anyone with more experience with ginkos. I hope that was helpful : )
Mralabbad really? as in they're not really ginkos? or they don't send the tree?
I was eyeing one on eBay, but it's a seller all the bonsai ppl in Aus recommend for buying wire ... so hmm...
@@mralabbad7 also make sure you know the seeds you get have had contact with pollen. There have to be male and female trees around. The female trees will make their seeds even if they're not fertilizer so you can't really tell from the outside. In the Netherlands the climate is also not ideal for ginkgos to reproduce. They can grow here but they won't be able to reproduce so also look out for that
just gotta say, i enjoy your videos so much! thank you for that. and your new old truck is cool!
Thank you Cyndy, I'm liking the truck and it will be put to good use!
Hi Nigel I am a bonsai enthusiast and gingko are among the species I love. I follow you on YT with interest. Having seen two of your videos from 2019 and 2020 I would like to know if you have posted any more videos
on the gingko you had in the works and if so if it is possible to see where they are at. Thank you and good work
Wow!! No fear Nigel is his name. Lol. Going to be great looking I'm sure. Thanks for this video now the wife knows I'm not crazy for doing the things I do to trees. Matter of opinion lol take care
Doing to trees is a big difference compared to doing for trees
I'll be known as the gambler! I hope the tree does well, it has such a nice base!
@@TheBonsaiZone that's for sure buddy. The gambler it is lol. I hope so too it's got some real great beginnings for sure.. here's hoping for u
@@MrFlashwall the only thing we do for the trees is to help them back to health after what we do to them. What we do to them is hardly for them it's for us. Tree is happy to just grow left alone.
What a lovely tree
Hi Nigel! Love your channel ❤ any update about this ginkgo?
I'm actually kinda a newbie and didnt mean to much by it, I actually use non organic fertilizer as well. I agree with washing the roots too. You're my favorite channel.
No problem Zack I didn't take it the wrong way, it was an excellent topic for discussion! Keep them coming!!!
@@TheBonsaiZone cool, I will, :)
I just pruned my two Ginkgoes last week. I live in southern USA so I already have leaves on both of my Ginkgo trees! I can't wait to see how your's turns out after this heavy pruning!
Thanks James, I hope the tree does well and the leader grows tall over the summer!
I love this.. watching Nigel in the mornign :)
Thank you and have a great day!

Hiya Nigel, I just saw this video. Don’t know how I missed it on the first go ‘round. Phenomenal new root production since you potted it from the nursery pot. That pumice/turface mix really did the trick. I very much like how the roots are shaping up. I have an observation to share with you....maybe you already know this but I haven’t heard it mentioned. Forgive me, if you have already addressed this.
I think you have a grafted tree there. In order to assure a male tree, most commercially sold ginkgos are male scions grafted onto a rootstock (usually grown from seed, these rootstocks MIGHT be female). The bark on the bottom part of your tree looks different to me than the bark that begins above what appears to me to be what is left of a graft union. One of your first cuts on the tree in this video was of a dead stump...I believe this is what was left of the original rootstock tree that the cultivar was grafted onto. Lastly, the rootstock is generally much more vigorous than the scion and has a tendency to send out LOTS of fast growing shoots. They often look different than the cultivar’s shoots or branches, too. Just as the ones you removed did versus the one you kept as leader.
I remember a plant tag in the first video. Did you keep it or remember the cultivar name? My guess is that the foliage will be very different than any that might appear from below the graft union. This would be further evidence that you have a grafted tree. Your tree being a grafted tree should not have much impact on your bonsai because you have chosen a styling path that would benefit from keeping shoot growth from the rootstock in check.
Looking very much forward to future ginkgo videos of yours. Happy Holidays! ....Jeff....
That was a really nice Ginko in the show. I enjoyed watching the work you've done so far on yours and really look forward to seeing it develop into the future.
Awesome bonsai work! Now the best time of the year begins, Nigel starts to root prune and repot his 'outdoor' bonsai ;)
Thanks for sharing this great content on my favorite bonsai channel, especially in this unusual times.
Stay healthy - sunny regards from Germany
Thank you Justus, we still have snow here and it snowed last night! I've put the re potting on hold until spring returns!
Did it survive? Yea think you did quit harsh rote pruning to it
It did really well, but the next year it got attacked by borers and they killed the tree.
Nice job Nigel ***
Those were some big cuts again Nigel, hoping for a green Ginko this summer. I have 2 little ones who's seeds I bought early spring 2018 and they're greening up a little already....they have a very long way to go before having a trunk like yours haha but they're still pretty. Thanks for another great video Nigel! Stay Safe! 💖😊👍💖
Yes, hopefully the tree will do well, it has a nice base to it!
Foist..Nigel I agree.. that ginkgo tree at the show was majestic!!
is it a tie this time?
Both tied at 8 seconds, but Ali shows up as Foist!
Ali Mirjalili ... have to wait for Nigel’s word!!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone ... thanks.. just glad to be here
All those people that like growing things can not help but rescue from the bargain bin! 😄 and the darn things always always grow. Me, killed it.
I got three Thuja trees from the bargain bin, 4 dollars each and they all died that winter. Just not enough strength built up over the summer.
@@TheBonsaiZone Ah! Ar last! Someone who has my method of growing things. Try and dye. Glad to know I am not alone. Sorry your stuff did not work out. Hope you do better next time.
I remember that Ginkgo from the exhibition. I really liked it, too.
You Ginkgo also looks very promising. I'm looking forward to future updates.
I planted some Ginkgo seeds before spring last year (2019) and most of them grew. I hope to get some good results in future. I always liked the Ginkgo tree. Even more now after being to Japan a few times. The autumn colors really look great.
The autumn colour is so nice when the sun is shining through the leaves! I hope your seedlings grow well!
how is the tree going on?
Great upload and happy Easter!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video and all the best!
Your haircut grows more vigourously than your gingko! ;) thanks for the video
I am very curious how the ginko will behave after this strong pruning. I keep my fingers crossed for you.
Thank you, I hope all goes well, we have some more cold weather blowing in today, I may have to place it in the basement for a few days!
I love using pumice in my succulent soil mix, but my pots are a lot smaller and I (probably) have fewer succulents than you have trees. I'm still on my first 10 lb bag
can you grow or propagate any of those roots you took off? left a like
Are you at all worried about root pruning before bud break? When is the best time to root prune?
I like to root prune as the buds begin to swell, but before the leaves emerge. This whole month will be re potting season for me!
Do you prefer a specific brand for pruners? I’m a beginner bonsai enthusiast and want to make sure I purchase tools that will last me! I am an Urban Forestry student that loves your videos, your understanding of pruning techniques and tree biology is fantastic! Great way to learn from all levels of background
Hello Ian, no any good quality Japanese tools work really well. I would stay away from the cheaper tools offered on places like E bay. A good tool will last you the rest of your life. The cheap ones work well for about 10 cuts, then you need to sharpen them!
Here is a good article....

Excellent video Nigel, very informative.
Thank you David, it's a bit of a gamble, but I hope the tree makes it!
i have 5 ginkgo cuttings about 7 in. tall / 2nd. summer how old should they be to start chopping ? if you planted the root cuttings will they grow ?
Very neat! Your update gave me some hope for my outdoor trees, the info is so conflicting on how to overwinter them!
Yes, you just have to keep experimenting until you find a system that works!
Great rootwork Nigel 👍🏻it will increase the beauty of the tree for sure 👌🏻if i didn't knew it, i would say you worked on a ficus rootbase, kinda reminded me of one, all these thick crossing roots ... And i think the ginko will be good it has build up enough vigor last year for sure 👍🏻
Thanks Patrick, I think it has enough roots left to recover, I hope so anyway!
I see a great future for this nebari. Hope it does well!
So far, the buds are swelling and starting to turn green at the tips! Go Ginkgo!
Hi Nigel, do you have a 2024 update on the Ginkgo tree ? ... 4 years should have made quite a difference !
This one got attacked by borer insects and quickly died after. Sad, but I have another that I'm growing from seed.
Hi Nigel I thought that after that hard root prune you were going to use a tile underneath to stop the new roots from going down cheers from Chicago
I find that with frequent root pruning, you can keep the roots that grow downward to a minimum. The tile isn't really necessary unless you repot infrequently, like every ten years or so.
I would like to see this tree in six months after this very severe root pruning.
Me too, hopefully alive!
@@TheBonsaiZone any updates?
Hi Nigel
I really enjoy watching all your videos. I can't wait for Austrian pine, but I like all your trees and I think you doing great job the way how you take care of them... just fantastic.
Most spruces are susceptible to fungal diseases. I have around 30 of them and your small starts to have some trouble with it i think. I can't see it from close so I might be wrong...
Thank you Eric, the Austrian pine is doing well so far, no elongation of the candles yet, but hopefully soon things will start to move!
5:25 well that was smooth nigel😄👍🏻
Thanks, probably more luck than skill!
How is gingko doing now nigel?
The buds all have green tips on them, I expect it to leaf out soon!
Hi Nigel. I'm curious about the Ginkgo. How is it developing? Cheers!
This tree got attacked by borers and it died very quickly after. I only have a small Ginkgo seedling now.
Oh too bad... Anyway thanks a lot for your content and for being one of the few advocates of the naturalistic aesthetic in the bonsai community.
Hi Nigel, where to leave a picture with my ginkgo.I have a question
I love my Ginkgo Laciniata in training. Very interesting leaves
Ginkgo Laciniata? I thought there is only one species of the genus Ginkgo.....biloba. Please advise what Laciniata is.
Gingko is really a unique kind of tree and also beautiful. The baby spruce, what species is it? (Maybe you said it but didnt catch it.)
The Spruce is a white spruce, I believe. I hope the Ginkgo makes it, it will be an exciting tree to develop!
These roots are epic
I think they will really be nice as the tree grows older!
I think that this tree is going to be amazing in the future. Are you going to save your branch and root cuttings to start another tree?
Thanks Bob, I have some Ginkgo seedlings on the go so I won't save the branches, just too many trees!
Is it easy to use the branch cuttings to make more bonsai ?
Nigel, do you sterilize your tools before pruning, or is this not a problem?
My tools are kept dry (mostly) so hopefully they are relatively clean. The tree is going into the soil and this isn't sterilized either. If you water the tree with rain water, this would introduce bacteria and fungus around the cut also.
It is good to try and keep everything clean, but in the end, nature will do it's thing!
@@TheBonsaiZone Thanks, for answering.
just in time NIGEL, i,m watching this in a snow storm, question, do you wire your trees or clip and grow? be strong, be safe, and be blessed
We have snow coming tonight too. I grow my trees with clip and grow. I do use wire occasionally to position a branch, but I try and do everything with clip and grow.
Another great video! Thanks for the distraction from today's world. Hope the tree survives the root pruning (it looks like a survivor)
If you grow a tree from seedling what would be your steps towards a bonsai? First the roots and than the trunk or get a thick trunk first (by putting it in the ground) and get the roots second?
For a really good tree, the roots should be worked on every year or two. The tree should be grown in a container all it's life and it will just slowly get larger and better. Trees grown in the ground can get very coarse looking if the roots and the branches aren't managed carefully.
Yes indeed, I was so impressed with the fall season show gingko bonsai that I spent an year importing authentic Gingko seeds which I managed germinating but the seedling isn't growing. I want to share some of my bonsai images to you, Nigel. How and where can we connect?
Hello, you can email me at...

@@TheBonsaiZone thank you so much :)
you're my inspiration thanks for a really good content
Thank you 22!
Good job👍
Such good great in such a small amount of time! If I recall correctly that had little roots when you got it.
Yes, the tree was very weak when I first got it, I was worried it wasn't going to make it. Now I'm worried again!
Great video! Thank you.
Thank you A1!
Nigel, how long does it take to get new buds forming on the trunk after this?
I'm hoping all the energy of the tree goes into growing the leader nice and tall so it blends in with the trunk better. It will probably grow branches all around the pruning points on the trunk, but I will remove these buds. I want the tree to be taller before starting the branch structure.
will those off cuts become root cutting and form new trees?
I won't try rooting them, I have a few Ginkgo seedlings on the go and I have to keep the number of trees I have down to a certain level!
@Nigel: Pumice has one major disadvantage: I tends to break up into smaller parts if still wet when it starts freezing. Lava seems to be more resilient despite sporting much larger "holes" than pumice. This winter, I had most of my outdoor trees have their pumice in the soil crushed to minor splinters and dusty particles, while the lava part stayed intact. So my suggestion would be to not use pumice for trees staying outdoors all winter.
Thanks Antony, I'll keep my eye on the pumice and see how it behaves!
Did this tree make it?
Hello Nigel, 3 years have passed, and what is the ginkgo biloba tree like now? Is it alive? Sorry for my English....
It got attacked by boring insects and it died very quickly, I was sad to see it go.
@@TheBonsaiZoneWhat a pity. Thanks for answering
Can you give me the ingredients of the potting medium so that the plant can grow as well as this? Thanks
is there another update of this tree?
Can you please give an update on this ginkgo tree?

It's doing really well so far, I hope it gets through winter without a problem!
@@TheBonsaiZone Would love to see an update! I have a ginkgo in a very similar situation. Thanks!
Thanks again nigel
Glad you enjoy the videos Shah!
I think your Ginkgo is really upset about that root prune, pls keep us updatet, have to repot 5 ginkgos next spring
It is gaining strength and vigor and is growing really well now, I definitely took it close to the limit!
Certain species of beneficial endomycorrhiza do seem to colonize the root under the cell membranes. I would suspect that washing would remove very little.
Thanks, I have always wondered how securely the fungus is attached. If it wasn't attached securely, it might just get washed away with a heavy rain?
Why does your ginkgo tree that you did the root pruning video not look like ginkgo ? It looks more like an elm or something.all my ginkgos have very different looking bark
I'm not sure why Robert, most of the older Gingko's around here have a smooth grey bark until they get really old!
Did it die? This seems to be the last update on this tree.
Yes, it got attacked by borer insects, it had about 10 holes in the trunk.
Radical
Great plant
Thanks!
Mad hair day!
Where is your update about it of 2121?
You should try to use expanded shale as substrate, it is dirt cheap and the best ever substrate, no need to mix it with anything else it is just perfect for this.
It also does not break down and u can always reuse it, because it also does not allow much algae to grow on it, since algae prefer to grow on lighter coloured substrate.
So go buy a sack of it and try it, I am sure you will soon understand why I am using it for all trees that do not require acidic soil. Compared to this, pumice is expensive crap.
You are right about the fungus, it attaches itself by growing directly into the root cells, and cannot be exactly washed off.
Thanks, I didn't think you could wash the beneficial fungus off that easily, otherwise it would be washed away in heavy rain. I've never seen expanded shale for sale around here, where do you buy yours from?
@@TheBonsaiZone It is often used as filling material on construction sites.
I buy mine from Ebay, it comes in big sacks 50 Liters I think for about 10 €. I could send you detailed infos by mail if you got an emailadress to share.
There are some people selling it for Bonsai but then they demand a way higher price. They say it is better because it is cracked, but it makes no difference.
I use the construction site expanded shale and it is fantastic material, hard, lightweight and porous it holds a lot of water.
the ginko tree is a medicinal plant?
Yes, I think they use the nuts and the leaves. I have heard some people get a bad allergic reaction to Ginkgo, so be careful!
Travail sur le racinaire très drastique !!!! Mais il faut souffrir pour être beau ,j aime bien le tronc du ginkgo !! A la prochaine !
Merci, j'espère que l'arbre survit, il a une bonne structure jusqu'à présent!
It's 2 years later. Did it make it Nigel?
It was doing really well, then in the second year it got attacked by boring insects. I had about 10 holes with sawdust coming out and the tree died very quickly after.
