My favourite part was 1:15 "I heavily dislike green in this format", but the draft steers you to all the greediest green cards, and proceeds to burn you with opening hands EVERY. SINGLE. GAME. Well fought.
1:30:00 btw because of the new combat rules you could assign your damage in the predamage phase so that you only kill the spinner of souls and distrubute non leathal damage to the rest of the creatures then assign leathal in the regular damage phase. This way the spinner gets 0 triggers and you still kill all creatures.
It’s so interesting seeing kenji build draft decks, I would never consider splashing a single burst lightning, not saying it’s right or wrong (I don’t know lol) but I’d never think of that
Singleton Burst Lightning also splashes well in UB (for similar reasons as Kenji's deck here, as UB is the best color pair for Campus Guide and Micromancer and is also hungry for removal).
I don't like it, especially in such a mana-hungry deck with lots of double-pip cards - this deck, for example, had a LOT of double-green casting cost cards, and the lone mountain, along with drawing burst some games, contributed to some of these losses.
Draft could have alternatively gone towards a more consistent GR (incidentally the highest winrate home for both Gx generally and Felling Blow specifically), but with that kind of variance it's hard to imagine that making a huge difference.
that last play; imagine instead taking the line where you only lose to Threaten(because you're the unluckiest) where you can keep Bouncer back or not attack with Wurm
Awww man that last turn was a really rough one, sometimes they just have the nuts I guess. With the benefit of hindsight it looks like leaving back Bigfin and planning to cast Felling Blow to clear the 1/1 flyer leaves you at 1hp to a single Involuntary while still presenting lethal.
Nice to see you made 85k subs!! Congratulations Sir Kenji, hope your treck to 100k is swift, you deserve it for all the hard work you put in for our entertainment. Thanks for all the vids I wait for them every morning at work.
Attack with colony and wurm, leave back turtle and bouncer and kill the flyer with bouncer. That way if they have removal + involuntary you survive on one life. Since that is like the only combination of cards you lose to I think it's the right play, but that's always easy to say in hindsight :)
Rewatched the drafting, aside from the elf, at one point you could have taken a 'barrier', and there was the Thespian/Burst pick... other than that it was just the packs and you picking the best cards for your lane.
I get how painful the mountain draws are but I straight up think it's not correct to splash just for burst. The pay off is not worth the risk. Not only that the mental frustration when it mana screws is the worst
I like to start wheeling green and get good decks. BTW last week I took Koma into Drakuset and some other chonkers with zombify (could take more than one but had some sick blue rares that derailed me a bit).. no big luck... BUT definetly had potential and was a very Nummy thing to do though
I think not taking Llanowar Elves is clearly a mistake. Not only because it is the best green common but also it has a unique unreplaceble effect. So imho it´s the much stronger sign (getting and sending) than Beserker. And imagine you have two Komas in your deck with Loot 😉
drafted Koma in a blue green draft deck and wrecked the pod...just have to build around it with LOTS of ramp...but once it hits the table its good game...
If you had blocked infestation sage with micromancer in the final game.. knowing you’re likely playing bouncer next turn, you might have been able to survive the threaten on wurm if you bounced the insect token instead of a goblin
Great video, as always. I've been watching exclusively your drafts to learn the art of drafting and from a newbie stand point I would like to request one thing. Could you allow a couple more seconds to read the cards you're picking and maybe tell us why you're choosing them? This would be really valuable. Keep up good work. Let's goooo for 100k🎉
Well, I've watched Kenji for almost three years now, since I started playing actually, and I love that he explains everything 😅 I think he is actually one of a few content creator and awesome player that can so well speak about his thought/play process while playing and building his decks.
1:30:00 with the new damage rule you aen't forced to kill creatures before assigning combat damage to others, so you could have killed the Spinner of Souls and assigned combat damage dispersed on the other creatures and kill them in the normal damage step right?
That's correct! He should've assigned 3 dmg to the spinner then the rest of first strike dmg divided amongst the other creatures without killing any of them. He also had lethal in the same attack lol. Weird seeing Kenji make 2 mistakes at once :D
Really needed those llanowar elves. Always how these decks end up, you get some llanowar elves and then end up with nothing to ramp into. Or this with bombs but no elves 😂
honestly not understanding at all why not go RG here - getting a reasonable-r curve, a mana dork and a haster for the high drops, the UG version with this curve is asking for painful draws
I have watched almost all of your Foundations drafts and still have to understand why you hate green so much. Every time you evaluate the individual cards, you rate them good, plus you like some of the commons like Snarespinner. Is it a lack of synergy?
@@spencerhack123 good mana curve, some removal and a couple top end cards. this is a core set. so basic limited fundamentals are more important than flashy combos
to be quite honest these opening hands were to be expected. fixing wasnt good, the curve basically starts at 3, so many expensive cards, and all of that with virtually no ramp in the entire deck. Koma is great when cast, but I feel like in a deck without ramp koma in your starting hand might as well be a mull to 6.
I pulled a Quilled Greatwurm and put it into a commander deck. Knowing it triggers on any combat damage is huuge. I thought it was combat damage to *players*.
Koma is always a trap. Not playing red was painful to see; lowers the curve, give you access to the burst lightning, no splash neede, and it deals with drawing that t1 mountain issue of everygame😅.
Nummy I love ya my guy but you gotta stop taking mulligans on the not so great but keepable hands only to get a one land unplayable hand and then mull to 5. It hurts to watch.
so many questionable picks.... you get one of the strongest cards in the set and you refuse to draft toward it.... not picking 2nd koma is just insane. not picking llanowar elves is insane...
second koma is not needed at all, one is enough to win games, two is just gonna hurt more than it helps. cant run a ton of top end cards, in particular 7 drops. modern magic is a fast gam., 2, 3, 4 curve out, backed up with some removal is often enough to win. trying to get there with a ton of bomby 7 drops is not a great plan. llanowar elves might have been a good pickup but i dont remember where he passed that.

I think the last play is playing like they have the Involuntary. Only attack with the Bigfin Bouncer. Might have been a winning line?
Are Llanowar Elves really wheeling that much? I certainly don't expect them to.
Those opening hands were atrocious. So unlucky. Awesome deck gg!
that last play; imagine instead taking the line where you only lose to Threaten(because you're the unluckiest)

Keeping bouncer back wouldn't have helped either, right?
It when help if he uses the felling blow to give it +1/+1. Then he stays 1hp out of lethal range
@@andresantana7876 That's what I thought as well. Ensures you agains almost anything they could have.

I would have drafted the second Koma in a Loot roulette deck. Who knows, could have saved Nummy in the second match.
That loot to koma was so lucky lol. Fun game to watch

Real tough spot there, but while it would have been an out It was also 0% to hit that Koma in the game 3, you'd hit Koma on your first Loot activation

great draft, you deserved more!
The only way to play around involuntary was patience. Trap the druid and swing with bouncer on a 3 turn clock.
1:23:45 Look at me getting beaten up by Nummy,
Greatwurm is such a nutso card. If you can get in with just a creature or two it's next to impossible to get it off the board.
Koma tricked me. Didn't draw it most games, and when I did, it died immediately. 😢
Me like 80% of the time I pull a bomb haha
Ive gotten sire twice, koma twice, bloodthirsty conqueror twice lol. Sire got played once, won, conqueror played once, lost, and koma not at all
Good luck!!
I would never splash a third color for a single card. The shuffler can't handle that
what % WR compensates for first picking a 2 colour card?
Koma, Koma, Koma, Koma, Koma, Chameleon. Also ward 4 is ridiculous, just make them hexproof already lol
6 x 4 drops. Good Luck!
I had two Komas and a Kaito and it was the best deck I’ve ever built, went 5-3 lol.
maybe the burst wasn't a good splash, that might've helped with the mana.
At 56:20 can you not block sac with the Hart?
Can but it has trample so all gets through anyway

I disagreed about running the Burst Lightning, and the games showed why it wasn’t a good call.
gg, rough beats
Lands on point
I dont get the hate for garruks uprising especially in red/green with a lot of ways to trigger it. Card draw is so important especially in green
Maybe you just misremembered the worms ability, because the one player killed the blocker with an instant like it would matter to get player damage

i played green in both drafts and got to the money haha
I went 3-1 in draft 1 with a pretty sweet dimir deck. Then went 0-1 in draft 2 with a less sweet dimir deck :(
Missed a red black zombify deck with the komas
how would you get the komas in grave?

You had some tough draws bro but honestly this deck was weird and janky. Good run though
Unpopular opinion. I think red is worse than green
You had lethal in the last game, by punching the 1/1 flying just to add 1 counter on the bouncer.
nope. op would only go to 1 instead of 2.
