I really enjoy your quick or subtle music recommondations or rather mentions during your usual videos, I usually give them a listen. Ever thought about having a 2nd channel only for the music talk?
1:55 I wasn't expecting John Darko to peer into my very soul today. I'll still campaign for the Darko red hot chilli peppers album review series to happen. 9:58 Nice of you to think of us John, but we're audiophiles: we don't listen to music... We just endlessly buy new gear and test it!
It's pretty funny that you refer to Optimal as grungy and gritty. Compared to a few of the local shops here in New Orleans it looks like a surgical center with music in it.
John, i really like your style of music. The great audiophile things (with a twist sometimes) and those techno records also. I'm building a vinyl collection besides my dj records, bit like you and I'm buying cd's again that I've had in the past and sold or lost and also some new stuff. I always love the vinyl/cd buying content over here! More of this please!
Thanks John for recommending Dream Injection! 1995 was such a definitive period in the creation of IDM and ambient techno. I often get the feeling of being grounded when listening to it. Already playing it, already found it on the web and I think, I'm gonna buy it.
Wow, didn't know these stores existed! Visited Munich twice in 2018 and 2019 :((( Thanks for this video, will definitely check those out next time I'm there =D
The wallet got off quite lightly (so far..) thanks for the recommendations, wherever possible I add the suggestions to my streaming lists and give them a go. No better way to hear about albums than from a music fan 👍
Great video AND made me remember some band from years ago , thanks ! ( I need to go to my cassette collection urgent to list some old music and search on streaming services to enjoy again)
Nice lil’ detour from the show and always dig your sharing on the Darko discoveries & discs as usual. Your broadcast had me jumping into Discogs new resource offering and which allows for those like us to more easily find cool shops in major cities and other places around the globe. That SOM album is such a damned good rocker and hope you might consider doing a future review using the upcoming release from The Smile.
Love these music recommendation videos. While I enjoy the gear reviews, especially the newer streaming and all-in-one speaker systems, I have a system that I'm very happy with (Genelec, Bryston, Simaudio, Pro-ject) so at this point it's more about the 'software'. Look forward to more videos like this. Thanks!
I dig it. In fact, your music-scavenging / record shopping episodes are my favorite since you have such an exquisite musical taste (because it’s like mine 😝). And well, also because they are indeed more acce$$ible to my pockets than most of your recommended audio gear is lol. I’ve discovered a few good bands through those episodes, like The Mutton Birds, so thank you and keep more of those coming. Regards. Xoxo
Caught that Sister's album before you even got there... And that This Mortal Coil is amazing. I discovered so many bands from TMC back in the day because they are all covers that became bands I love, like Big Star, Tim Buckley, and Gene Clark.
Musik in München: so envious... I've about half those records & CDs in my collection, owned a few of the others and would likely purchase the rest. Nice finds! The Kraftwerk Remixes Vinyl was much better than I aniticpiated (aside from the packaging - they cheaped out on this one.) Hope you had a great time.
What a fun "walk about" video. Thanks! It's always nice to see the hifi connection to your life outside of your home. The second time around stores seemed to do a good job of inventory handling. While vinyl is not a source I am partaking in, I remember albums fondly. I wonder if the "condition" of a used record is determined visually only or if each disc is played by those merchants to ascertain how clean it is? Seems unlikely that could be done, due to the time involved. Thanks again for the vinyl tour of Munich!
I really like to listen to HIFI gear reviews. The endpoint is to put something in to listen music. Once I look into the suggestions, it pops out similar artists and that's the fun part; to discover new roads...
John, when you used the term 'metal' to describe some of the Sisters of Mercy album, my initial thought was 'Oh great - gothic metal, the red-haired stepchild that neither genre wants to love like one of their own'. While I stand by that for some of Paradise Lost' early catalog, I was pleasantly surprised by the title track on Vision Thing. it's good to be surprised occasionally - thanks for that. (FWIW, I doubt that few of the 70,000 or so metalheads who will descend on Wacken in August would even recognize Vision Thing as anything other than metal/hard rock, and that's a compliment)
Got My life In The Bush of Ghosts on an original vinyl pressing but haven't listened to it in years. Need to get it out, give it a clean and spin it. I have a few keyboard era Twilight Sad and didn't know they had a guitar phase. Will need to check it out. They must be in the running for most depressing band ever. Even more than Richmond Fontaine.
I watched the vids on EDM recommendations the other day and was wondering if you could make a video of your "least" audiophile music recommendations and on your "guilty" pleasurers for music. IK guilty pleasure is not the best real description. You like what you like and there is no reason to be guilty about it, but you know what I mean. Keep on the great work. BTW a meter is 39 inches so that would be 3 feet 3 inches... (I had to do it)
Song to the Sirens Sung by Rose Betts a version different & i think better to the Mortal Coil, is in the Zac Snyders Justice League (Excerpt available on youtube search Song To The Siren Flash Scene). Good to see your completing your circles on Apple Watch. Music browsing is a great way to get your steps up and watching from cold wintery Antarctic blast Melbourne that Munich sunshine looks really good.
Thank you - I enjoy these adventures. The Kraftwerk remixes CD features at least one, if not two tracks, not found on the Lp or download versions... Not sure what Ralf & the team were thinking? I can understand a track or two not fitting on the Lp version, but why not include the tracks in the download version?
What’s the story on shady “skateboard dude” that unlocks a bike at 3:38…then, shows back up at 4:15 as he lifts n carries the bike to the new lock-up position…all the while keeping a close eye on you and Jana with skateboard in-hand….hmmmmmm (CHECK IT OUT)
looks like to me, he wanted a more secure place to lock up his bike. IE a light pole versus nothing but a wheel interlock....someone could carry the bike away as well
Funny, I also weigh the value of cd/vinyl with number of coffee cups. Also i think about spending on one cigarette pack per day (about 5.9€ back in 2017) when I lived in Germany. So the decision is even easier now-- to invest in music and congratulating myself for successfully quitting smoking. 😁
Love the video, but Munich has probably the best public transportation system in the world. I don't know why you wouldn't use that to get to the store. Will definitely check out these stores the next time I visit this wonderful city.
As an Englishman in Munich I was surprised at the Uber ride - M2 isn't far from Roseneimer Platz on the main SBahn line (stammstrecke) through the middle of the city. Will deffo check out these CD stores - my turntable is in the UK - great video - I'm now a subscriber!
John, I got to be honest. I’m not an audiophile. My rig is like a poor man’s supper. My streaming devices are an iPhone 13 Pro and a MacBook Pro. My DAC is a Dragonfly Red and my “loudspeakers” are the Meze 99 classics and the Campfire Audio Holocene. Pretty basic. I’m in it for the music and I watch your videos basically for the music and your super cool attitude towards audio. Please keep the excellent work and thanks for the music recommendations 😎
Twilight Sad. Best band to come out of Scotland for decades. Disagree with JD on it being their best. They don't have any bad albums. 3 Seconds of Dead Air is a meisterstück.
Wish you'd give yourself a favour and find a copy of Trance-Formed from Beyond AAA recording. One of my top 3 all time favourite trance compilation from early 90's feating Mijk Van Dike & Cosmic Baby x
We’ve a second hand Book/Record/CD shop in Dublin where the average price for CD’s would be €3.95 (second hand of course). Freebird Records if you don’t mind the plug. Where the market for second hand Vinyl sees very little in the shape of bargains, the CD market seems to have flipped and is ripe for the picking. As John points out, often a good source for original recordings free from the loudness war that gripped the music industry in the noughties.
Let's face it John there's tons and tons of good audio gear out there now , but very little good music , it seems all the best music has past , and I notice your the only one wearing a mask ? Are you afraid of fresh air lol tuffin up mate your making Aussie men look soft lol! All good 👍
I am clearly getting to know you...when you did the 👎 to the album you pulled out, I said to myself 'ha, must be Red Hot 🌶️ 🫑🫑🫑' and, pausing the video, checking the cover and searching on Google, confirmed it to be so👍 I liked that...thank you. Great to see Jana with you as well👍👍👍
I am from munich and knew Optimal and Ludwig Beck, but never heard of M2. Thank you very much, i'll check it out!
I really enjoy your quick or subtle music recommondations or rather mentions during your usual videos, I usually give them a listen. Ever thought about having a 2nd channel only for the music talk?
Worked in Munich back in 2001-02 and was a regular customer at M2 in Schwabing. Good to see it still thriving 👍🏻👍🏻
Was there from 99-04. Probably my favorite city in the world.
What about Jana's picks? I would enjoy her recommendation as well... ;)
OMG!! John and Jana together!!! Audio All Stars Unite!
Yes Yes Yes, this is the video I've been waiting for excellent!!
Thank you!! :)
The Twilight Sad. Love that band and that album!!
Interesting little shopping trip. Thanks for sharing. It's nice to see different parts of the world
1:55 I wasn't expecting John Darko to peer into my very soul today. I'll still campaign for the Darko red hot chilli peppers album review series to happen.
9:58 Nice of you to think of us John, but we're audiophiles: we don't listen to music... We just endlessly buy new gear and test it!
Am I the only one who doesn‘t know ANY of the Artists John is talking about in his videos?
I don't know everyone else who watches John's content, but I'll give you a tentative yes. I'm 58 and i know a few of those artists.
No, you are not. I know about Kraftwerk, but that's about it.
Not the only o e but I still enjoy the videos !
Haha, I'd give that Björk record a shot if you've never heard her music. She's an incredible artist.
I didn't know most, apart from Brian Eno, Bjork, Kraftwerk.
My daughter and I did a long afternoon record shopping in Dublin in March. Fun stuff!
This is perfect I am going to Munich next week. thanks for the intel
I'm ALWAYS excited to see what folks in the hifi space are listening to. I've gotten some great finds that way. More of this is welcomed warmly 100%
It's pretty funny that you refer to Optimal as grungy and gritty. Compared to a few of the local shops here in New Orleans it looks like a surgical center with music in it.
oh so you were in my neighbourhood- we live close to the M2 :) great music picks, like always!
How nice, some metal at the beginning of this video 🤘
As I wrote before I like these episodes of your travels to LP and cd stores. Thanks. Enjoy all your work.
John, i really like your style of music. The great audiophile things (with a twist sometimes) and those techno records also. Just checked out The Twilight Sad and they're great! Thanks for the recommendation, John ^^
Thanks John for recommending Dream Injection! 1995 was such a definitive period in the creation of IDM and ambient techno. I often get the feeling of being grounded when listening to it. Already playing it, already found it on the web and I think, I'm gonna buy it.

I love learning about music. Thank you
Great video. I enjoyed following along on this trip, and especially liked Ludwig Beck.
Congratulations on the Patreon ambassador news, Darko
Oh, such a lovely video! So fun!
So glad you picked up It'll End in Tears. It's still my favourite record of all time. Played my copy again just last night.
The wallet got off quite lightly (so far..) thanks for the recommendations, wherever possible I add the suggestions to my streaming lists and give them a go. No better way to hear about albums than from a music fan 👍
This video was cool. At one point John was flipping through the records on beat with the music. Love that attention to detail.
Thumbs up for the metal intro alone.
That Vision Thing cover is totally a reference to Eye in the Sky by Alan Parsons project I guess.
That opening track sure woke me up!
Love this video. Cool stuff! 🎵
Great video AND made me remember some band from years ago , thanks ! ( I need to go to my cassette collection urgent to list some old music and search on streaming services to enjoy again)
Those Eno cds are a steal.
The Dream Injection comps are superb. I have them all. I was just playing 5 over the weekend. Sensational.
Darko hates the red hot chilli peppers confirmed 😂
I saw the sisters of mercy in Denver Colorado 1999. Fantastic show and group!
More of this! Apex Twin t-shirt ;-)

Looks like you've bought a lot of the stuff I have - Eno, Softboys, This mortal coil - all excellent!
I love these shows, do more please
Great video. Thank you

Looking forward to this playlist
Caught that Sister's album before you even got there... And that This Mortal Coil is amazing. I discovered so many bands from TMC back in the day because they are all covers that became bands I love, like Big Star, Tim Buckley, and Gene Clark.
The Man vs Machine coffee shop has the best flat white ever. That’s biggest find of this video.
Great pickups with the Eno’s and This Mortal Coil! And I’m a Floodland guy, probably because it’s the album I heard first.
Englishman living in Germany going to the store to spend a few bucks
Australian…just sayn 😉

It would be so great to be able to go to a department store with a huge classical CD section! I don’t think any such thing exists in the US.
Vision Thing is just a fantastic rock record! Damn right!
I love the Diana Krall insight joke.
The Kraftwerk remix album is mindblowing!! Thanks for your recommendation!
Twilight Sad record! Love that one.
Good haul John.
Apollo is one of my favourite albums 😍
John, when you used the term 'metal' to describe some of the Sisters of Mercy album, my initial thought was 'Oh great - gothic metal, the red-haired stepchild that neither genre wants to love like one of their own'. Lovely.
Currently listening to the Kraftwerk album. Not quite my genre but willing to give it a go.
John, you ever talk about your fascination with electronic pop?
Too bad you’re sleeping on the new Moderat album (or you already have it) but great video nonetheless!! Nice that Jana made the journey too!
Must go to Munich and Berlin
More videos like thi, please

I spotted the new Moderat record in the first two stores, but couldn’t see it in the last. That was the game wasn’t it?
Hi @darko. Did you listen to the new Moderat album yet? I've seen it passing by in your video... 2:40

Oh, that cold, cold thumbs down for the RHCP! But still makes me wanting to visit the Bavarian City ASAP. ;)
BTW the best RHCP album. 😭
Amazing album, but why the thumbs down… is it bad pressing?
Which one of these are more based on electronic music like techn electro and house?
Apparat everywhere
John wasn’t there lp/cd section s of the red hot chilly peppers .☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
Funny, I also weigh the value of cd/vinyl with number of coffee cups. Also i think about spending on one cigarette pack per day (about 5.9€ back in 2017) when I lived in Germany. So the decision is even easier now-- to invest in music and congratulating myself for successfully quitting smoking. 😁
Did Jana buy anything of note?
Love the video, but Munich has probably the best public transportation system in the world. I don't know why you wouldn't use that to get to the store. Will definitely check out these stores the next time I visit this wonderful city.
Lol. Not even the best system in Germany

BTW love how you ditch the worst band of all time. Olaf must be pissed 🤣
Anyone else notice John picked up a copy of The Cure Seventeen Seconds at the first store? Highly unimportant I know…
Twilight Sad. Best band to come out of Scotland for decades. Disagree with JD on it being their best. They don't have any bad albums. 3 Seconds of Dead Air is a meisterstück.

I don't get it. Cant you take the Subway(metro) there? I looked it up it is not far from transit.
1
Are you sure Jana was there? what did you once say about not being in the same shot, Not even a Selfie :)
is it any point of music shopping apart from shopping pleasure itself in this days of free download and music streaming ?
Yes, and it's about knowing you own it!
Also with vinyl, it's about the ceremony.
link to man purse? not judging, not sarcastic, men need to carry crap too
+1
Not sure why you got an uber? could have got the u-bahn or s-bahn from Marienplatz to M2.
John are you 8 feet tall lol
Why the dislike for the RHCP album? If you don’t like it, just ignore it and don’t show it in the video.
Because the RHCP aren’t Berlin kids with synths, silly boy
This Mortal Coil!
Agree.. he can be a elitist at times. RHCP are great.
I gave you a thumbs down for the Chilli Pepper thumbs down.
CD's sooo cheap!

Are you still told to wear masks in shop?
Omg 😳
No he isn't in Germany. He does it voluntarily. 🙉
The mask is highly effective in stopping the spread of airborne diseases, especially in inside environments. Why would you not want to wear one?
Growing up with vinyl and living a large part of my life only being able to play vinyl makes this video painfully boring to watch .
