I remember the Tri Rail from back when I grew up in South Florida. When I was in 4th grade, my class and I went on a field trip and we took the Tri-Rail train to West Palm Beach to go to the Whitehall Flagler museum, have lunch at Chuck E. Cheese’s and go to the Dreher Park Zoo (now the Palm Beach Zoo). Pretty fun! I liked riding on the Tri-Rail.

Miami's metro is easier than others since it's narrow and long, designers can get away with a few lines connecting all major areas, However most metros in US are sprawled and have aggregious dead zones for transit, Which will make it much more difficult compared to the Miami West Palm Beach corridor.

In la they couldn't even afford to replace all their old cars so they replaced the outside cars with the newer safer ones and called it a day. They are also not even the same colors. And in 2018 we had 4 different loco models with 3 different liveries

Tri Rail provides decent frequent service to Southeast Florida, very practical and cost effective. You see a lot of flight crew, pilots and attendants riding it if they live in Palm Beach County and need to fly out of Ft Lauderdale or Miami International. Saves on gas, parking and stress.

I’m really impressed. The livery is charming and the interior is just fine. My experience of Florida is of endless multi lane freeways and stroads so it is great to see that rail travel is really expanding. Also impressive is that the train had a lot of passengers, including people with bikes, so that bodes well for the future. I’m definitely going to find a way to take the train, either this system or Brightline, the next time I’m there.

My first impression from this video was also "wow, so many passengers!". Every video I've watched about commuter rail in the US always gives the depressing image of desolate platforms where empty ghost trains stop without a purpose. It's so relieving to find a city with a successful commuter railway in the US!

When I visited Miami I took Brightline up to west palm beach, walked over to the Tri-rail station and took that service back to Miami. I wanted to experience both as a visiting railfan. Brightline price was like 8x as much but was much nicer and significantly faster. Brightline is fantastic service, but tri-rail is fantastic value. I'm glad both services exist, there is definitely a market for both. I just wish Amtrak Miami station was integrated with either service.

    • @daniellewis1789

Brightline seems to be focused on the longer distance traveller with their Orlando section and future westward and northward expansions. I think tying both networks together strengthens both services, especially if you can get a single booking trip including connections.

When my late parents lived in Boynton Beach, I occasionally took Tri-Rail to visit Miami, getting off at the transfer station and taking the Metro downtown. At the time Tri-Rail was using F40PH locomotives and the Bombardier Bi-Level coaches. I found the service to be clean and efficient. A direct connection to downtown Miami would be an improvement.

BTW, I was at that Amtrak Station for my trip from Miami to Winter haven, Florida almost a month ago!
I agree with them sharing the Brightline Station they will definitely get more passengers! Now hoping for that Brightline extension to Lakeland & Tampa in a few years.

Unless they recently did away with it there should still be one or two F40’s in service with the original green and orange livery, which I’m biased towards since I’m a UM fan lol. But yeah the Tri-Rail has always been a busy and very important service down here since there’s a ton of people who live in one county and work in one of the other two.

I didn't realize that Tri-Rail purchased the Hyundai Rotem cars. I rode Tri-Rail back in 2007 when I was speaking at Railvolution and will be back there in Oct/Nov for this year's Railvolution so I will have to try them out along with Brightline. However, the last I heard is that the extension to the Government Center station is been put on indefinite hold because the aerial structure approaching the station was not designed to handle the heavier Tri-Rail equipment.

I caught the tri rail about 5 years ago from hollywodd to the Tri rail/metro transfer station (where i continued on the metro to miami) and back again. Sadly on the way there someone had been hit by a train so the train was replaced by a bus to Coral Gables.... but I had to wait well over an hour for the bus to come. I was visiting my sister who was living at Pembroke pines at the time (I'm Australian) and I am vision impaired so i have to catch public transport and I found the public transport in South East Florida to be weird. Miami dade appears to have a great metro system but Broward county's bus routes seem to go straight west-East/East West with only very limited services going from pembroke pines to miami in the "peak times" to get people to/from work and the buses seemed to be slow. Its as if Broward and Miami Dade Counties don't speak to each other in regards to public transport. There's so much open spaces around the roads in broward Counnty. I feel that Broward county could invest in some Light rail lines to convey passengers to the Tri Rail and then find a way to get the tri rail to run right into Miami. My 2 cents worth on south east Florida Public transport. lol EDIT: Just finished watching the video. Its great to see that tri rail will be going through to the Brightline Terminal!

I’m surprised by how solid this somewhat small commuter service is, however, it is absolutely appalling that it is not electrified. US railroads will never learn! 😤

The entire line is 75mi long so decently long for a commuter.

American transit is such a joke. "Oh we will just run this train as a stopgap measure while we build this highway, then cancel so everyone can get back in their cars asap!"
Thank God there was some sense talked into the decision makers back then

I am sick to death of "toilets time." It's always the same -- everything is wonderful. For those times it's not, THEN talk about the bloody toilet. Otherwise, give us a rest.
