Bill is a Defense guy first, but really LT was dominant Defense and shortened many QB careers. The Era didn’t protect QBs. Brady is the Best QB of All time but in an error where the QB is protected from injury. LT and Bruce Smith were the best defensive players of all time. There are some close in Modern Era but those guys ripped people’s heads off! QB is the most important position but it requires everyone else to make them look good and perform. For a Defensive player it is more shear individual dominance - good schemes help but a Defensive player that is smarter and more physical can take over a game with sacks, tackles, interceptions, batted balls, hurries.
Bill was also there watching in one of the most impactful ‘sliding doors’ moments in NFL history: when Leonard Marshall’s hit on Montana late in the 1990 NFC Championship game ended Montana’s career in SF. If that hit doesn’t happen, not only do the Niners perhaps win that game to play for an unprecedented 3rd straight Super Bowl win, but Montana was the back-to-back NFL MVP, too, playing at an insanely high level. Even if the Giants still pull off the upset, if Montana isn’t hurt, NFL history in the ‘90s is VERY different. Steve Young - who would win league MVP in 1992 and 94, and lead the Niners to win the 94 Super Bowl and would win Super Bowl MVP - likely has to be traded. The Cowboys dynasty may not have happened the way it did. It is possible the Tuck Rule did the same thing in Brady’s favor. So Bill knows how close things can go toward everyone believing Montana was the best QB ever, to believing it is Brady. If Montana’s not hurt in that NFC Title game, he’s likely regarded as the best ever: if Brady’s lost ball against the Raiders is ruled a fumble, he’d certainly not have won that first Super Bowl, and he may never have been regarded as the best. There isn’t really one play that changes how people think of Lawrence Taylor. I suppose if Scott Norwood hits that FG, Taylor’s ‘only’ a one-time champ (like the 2nd highest rated defensive player ever, Reggie White. The 3rd highest on the NFL 100 list, Dick Butkus, sadly never won a championship at all). But that’s really it. The 1986 Giants’ playoff run is the 2nd most dominant in NFL history (behind only the 1989 49ers in point differential they won 49-3, 17-0, and 39-20), so it’s tough to say any one play changes it too much. As much as I did appreciate Young, he wasn’t Montana who in my mind is really the only rival in Greatest QB ever conversation to Brady and yes he played in an era that didn’t protect the QB and Montana’s career was cut short which probably would not have occurred the same way in the modern era. Brady’s longevity has allowed many of his great accomplishments. Brady also plays in a more pass centric, less run/pass balanced era.
He coached LT basically from day 1.. Ray Perkins was LT's first head coach, Parcells was the D coordinator & Belichick was the special teams coach; when Perkins went to Alabama, Wellington Mara & George Young named Parcells HC & Belichick became defensive coordinator; Parcells & Belichick we're the perfect coaches for LT.. they let loose & he just terrorized the league...
Bill does not talk about anyone this way - the lengthy answers, the distance he places LT away from anyone else... LT was the GOAT for me, but Im a Giants fan, and I saw him play in person about 50 times. He was a menace.

In my humble opinion having grown up in the 70s and 80s watching these guys, I have a very difficult time saying that Lawrence Taylor was better than Reggie White. I also have a hard time saying that Reggie White was better than Lawrence Taylor. But those two guys had completely different styles and were asked to do totally different things on the field. So it’s hard to compare. But to me… I would take Reggie White. The guy played every single position on the defensive line equally as dominantly. An average more than a sack per game in the first eight years of his career. Think about that. No one before him or after him ever came close to doing that
Well u gotta remeber, Bellicheck was able to ascend up the ranks mainly because of LT. LT is not only responsible for these pass rusher getting damn near 200 mil, hes also responsible for a lot of bellichecks success.
I think he's the Jim Brown of defense. He could have played with anyone in any era. And he would have been the best. I think the best overall player I've seen in this century is Troy Polamalu. I think he's in that class of player that would have been great in any era.

And yes he was great at that... but also great at everything else he was asked to do from special teams to even a game at TE during replacement games. His zone coverage skills were superb too, QBs who targeted his zone were at risk for a pick 6. I don't recall him in man coverage but his instincts were so great for everything else I doubt he would fail at that. And for clarification I am not saying he was not used in man coverage I am just saying I never noticed it because the TV camera doesn't show the whole field.
And L.T. didn't even practice that hard, teammates claim that he used to fall asleep in team meetings that's how great he was but on Sundays he came to play, an average player would have been cut right there.
I feel like when he reminisces about LT it brings him back to the time when he was a young coach who was hungry to learn and really just wanted to make an impact in the sport. We all have those warm memories when we were younger that just put a twinkle in our eyes and put a smile on it faces. That’s exactly what happens when he thinks about his time with LT.

Watt and whoever the frick, and nobody and I mean nobody, is in the same category as Lawrence Taylor pursuing the run, setting the edge, bull rushing tackles 70 lbs heavier than him and busting double and triple teams and playing in short or medium coverage. The only man I’d put better than him is Reggie white and that’s mostly from the interior, he would just throw 330 lb tackles to the side and could play both end and both tackle positions lining up anywhere across the line. It’s a good thing Taylor and White didn’t play on the same team because i honestly don’t think an offense would ever make to the red zone. It would probably take 7 or 8 guys to block those 2 and who could run or throw or catch against the other 9 defenders😂
LT was the once in a lifetime talent, and if you drafted him, the impact on your team was immediate and noticeable, elevating the play out of necessity, of everyone else on the team. He was not only more gifted athletically than virtually everyone playing that I saw, except perhaps a Bo Jackson, but his foot ball IQ and acumen were unparalleled, comparable to that of Mike Singeltary, another brilliant defensive football mind. When you get Bill Belichick to respond with more than a cursory yes, no, or another mono-syllabic retort to any question you know that subject holds a special place in his heart and memories. There have been other excellent defensive players, but really nobody that revolutionized a position, changed the way the game was actually played and caused every opposing offensive player and coordinator to lose sleep trying to think of ways to either slow down or survive the encounter with LT and his Giants.
LT also had one other thing going for him. Opposing offenses were scared of him. He was mean and he physically punished them. It's hard to win in a physical sport like football when you're scared of your opponent. There's a great youtube video of an interview with Erik Dickerson talking about his first game vs. Taylor in Dickerson's rookie season. I won't ruin it for you, but it's hilarious. Dickerson was genuinely scared.
He was solely responsible for the way that the left tackle became crucial. He made Anthony Munoz and other great tackles a lot of money. He made football better.
I do agree with you that Bo Jackson was another freak of nature like LT but Bo, unfortunately, did not last very long in the NFL after his hip-pointer injury

LT was explosive, passionate and had great instincts. Bobby Knight said Larry Bird had better court awareness than anyone else. Taylor had that on the football field.
LT had physical gifts and he played so hard. Took advantage of them and was just a natural leader on the team. Rarely do gems like this come to your team and the Giants won big with him.
all one has to do is watch the clip of LT breaking Joe Theismann's leg. Clean hit, compound fractures of both tibia and fibia, career ender. LT got up, looked at Theismann, put his hands on his head, and frantically gestured for the Redskins' medical personnel to get out there.
Had the privilege of growing up in my teens years watching LT and those Giant defenses dominate the everyone. Such a great time and will never be like that again...sadly.
I remember those years. The Giants gained more yardage on defense due to the great LT. Also as a bonus you get a chance to watch LT dominate. I am not worthy to watch but I still watched.

On RUclips type in "Lawrence Taylor forced fumbles" (66 of them) it's broadcast footage. It's hysterical seeing him destroy people on punt coverage & he played special teams for way longer than I thought. There's the same vids up of him titled "goal line defense" "sacks" "pass defense" "run defense" & every single play is a masterpiece not even exaggerating bc I remember watching his entire career & forgot how much harder he hit & faster he played than everybody else bc NFL Films slow motion & production has way too much isolated slow motion & music is a distraction but the game broadcast isolated plays really show that he is by far the greatest player the NFL has ever seen & Madden & Summerall call almost every play. & I grew up absolutely hating the Giants so definitely not being a homer the footage is just that insane & he does it against a who's who of Canton

As a Redskin fan I'll never forget Taylor as an intimidating monster. He was a key player on the 1986 Giants SB team which I believe had one of the best defenses in NFL history.

They were monsters of the midway as they used to say but no division dominated like the eastern division in those days. Btw LT broke Theismann leg in 85' at RFK. Amazingly Jay Schroeder replaced him that night and actually pulled off the win. I really miss those days.
i remember the night well. I was at a Bruce Springsteen concert, ironically at Giants Stadium. Didn't realize the conflict at the time. As soon as I left the show I met some friends at a sports bar. You gotta remember LT was drafted in 1981 and the QB sack didn't become an official statistic till 1982. Unfortunately there are a lot of great pass rushers who will never get the statistical recognition and credit they deserve from before 1982 because of that. With LT due to this reason it is believed there is probably somewhere between 15 and 20 sacks he doesn't get credit for.
LT was incredible. Just wondering what he would be like in today’s league. No tackles were really kick stepping back - they just kind of back pedaled. I mean this is all due to his technique coming off the edge in the 5 technique. The league completely had to re-write entire offenses in order to deal with him!

As a rookie cornerback, Lott bagged 7 interceptions, 3 of them were pick-6s, and he was the best player on a 49er defense that won the Super Bowl and Taylor shut Lott out for DROTY and DPOTY. Rickey Jackson was the most dominant 3-4 LOLB in the NFL during the 1980s. He was better than Andre Tippett over the long-term and his career numbers prove this out. No LOLB who played on the strong side had Jackson’s numbers.
Today's players benefit from better coaching, better understanding of technique, better nutrition, better science, however, if LT were around today, he'd have the benefit of all those things too. So yes, he'd still kick everyone's ass. He had some abilities you can't teach.

I used to watch all those Giant games with my Dad. Before LT if you had to go to the bathroom, you went when the Giant D was on the field. After LT, you went when the O was on the field. Also Madden & Summerall had the Giant games on CBS! Great days!

the way LT played the game. the unhinged ferocious speed combined with how strong he was as a human. it influenced the way everyone played the game in the late 90s and 2000s.
When I watched LT high lites, it was like the footage was slowed down for all the players around him. He was in a different place. Imagine if LT actually worked out with weights etc. What you saw was all natural. Never be another.
On goal line defense LT would line up 5 yards deep over the center. No matter where you wanted to run the ball in a goal line situation LT was going to be there. LT also played the wing on the extra point kick with HOFamer Harry Carson on the other side.

LT would use the last one to batter that last blocker into the QB, really pick him up by his shoulder pads and launch him into Joe Theisman! So much fun to see a total reckless abandon player unleashed on unsuspecting professional football teams!

You can't compare stats from then to now, it doesn't mean anything. LT was unique - other teams didn't just double or triple team him. Other teams were scared of him. He physically punished the opposition. There are interviews on youtube with Hall of Famers who talk about how they were scared of him. Micah is a tremendous talent, maybe a generational talent, but he doesn't command that level of fear in his opponents. No one else in the history of the NFL has.

And yes he was great at that... but also great at everything else he was asked to do from special teams to even a game at TE during replacement games. His zone coverage skills were superb too, QBs who targeted his zone were at risk for a pick 6. I don't recall him in man coverage but his instincts were so great for everything else I doubt he would fail at that. And for clarification I am not saying he was not used in man coverage I am just saying I never noticed it because the TV camera doesn't show the whole field.

And L.T. didn't even practice that hard, teammates claim that he used to fall asleep in team meetings that's how great he was but on Sundays he came to play, an average player would have been cut right there.
I feel like when he reminisces about LT it brings him back to the time when he was a young coach who was hungry to learn and really just wanted to make an impact in the sport. We all have those warm memories when we were younger that just put a twinkle in our eyes and put a smile on it faces. That’s exactly what happens when he thinks about his time with LT.
LT came in as a rookie as the best defensive player in the NFL. Nobody has done that before and since.

Watt and whoever the frick, and nobody and I mean nobody, is in the same category as Lawrence Taylor pursuing the run, setting the edge, bull rushing tackles 70 lbs heavier than him and busting double and triple teams and playing in short or medium coverage. The only man I’d put better than him is Reggie white and that’s mostly from the interior, he would just throw 330 lb tackles to the side and could play both end and both tackle positions lining up anywhere across the line. It’s a good thing Taylor and White didn’t play on the same team because i honestly don’t think an offense would ever make to the red zone. It would probably take 7 or 8 guys to block those 2 and who could run or throw or catch against the other 9 defenders😂
This is Belichick's version of being giddy and its always when he talks about Lawrence Taylor and its for good reason. LT was the man.
LT was the once in a lifetime talent, and if you drafted him, the impact on your team was immediate and noticeable, elevating the play out of necessity, of everyone else on the team. He was not only more gifted athletically than virtually everyone playing that I saw, except perhaps a Bo Jackson, but his foot ball IQ and acumen were unparalleled, comparable to that of Mike Singeltary, another brilliant defensive football mind. When you get Bill Belichick to respond with more than a cursory yes, no, or another mono-syllabic retort to any question you know that subject holds a special place in his heart and memories. There have been other excellent defensive players, but really nobody that revolutionized a position, changed the way the game was actually played and caused every opposing offensive player and coordinator to lose sleep trying to think of ways to either slow down or survive the encounter with LT and his Giants.

LT also had one other thing going for him. Opposing offenses were scared of him. He was mean and he physically punished them. It's hard to win in a physical sport like football when you're scared of your opponent. There's a great youtube video of an interview with Erik Dickerson talking about his first game vs. Taylor in Dickerson's rookie season. I won't ruin it for you, but it's hilarious. Dickerson was genuinely scared.
He was solely responsible for the way that the left tackle became crucial. He made Anthony Munoz and other great tackles a lot of money. He made football better.
I do agree with you that Bo Jackson was another freak of nature like LT but Bo, unfortunately, did not
last very long in the NFL after his hip-pointer injury

When anyone asks him a question about football history, he'll go off on a long tangent. Do a search on the long snapper question, he gave a 10 minute answer. LT was explosive, passionate and had great instincts. Bobby Knight said Larry Bird had better court awareness than anyone else. Taylor had that on the football field.

LT had physical gifts and he played so hard. Took advantage of them and was just a natural leader on the team. Rarely do gems like this come to your team and the Giants won big with him.

all one has to do is watch the clip of LT breaking Joe Theismann's leg. Clean hit, compound fractures of both tibia and fibia, career ender. LT got up, looked at Theismann, put his hands on his head, and frantically gestured for the Redskins' medical personnel to get out there.

On RUclips type in "Lawrence Taylor forced fumbles" (66 of them) it's broadcast footage. It's hysterical seeing him destroy people on punt coverage & he played special teams for way longer than I thought. There's the same vids up of him titled "goal line defense" "sacks" "pass defense" "run defense" & every single play is a masterpiece not even exaggerating bc I remember watching his entire career & forgot how much harder he hit & faster he played than everybody else bc NFL Films slow motion & production has way too much isolated slow motion & music is a distraction but the game broadcast isolated plays really show that he is by far the greatest player the NFL has ever seen & Madden & Summerall call almost every play. & I grew up absolutely hating the Giants so definitely not being a homer the footage is just that insane & he does it against a who's who of Canton

As a Redskin fan I'll never forget Taylor as an intimidating monster. He was a key player on the 1986 Giants SB team which I believe had one of the best defenses in NFL history.
They really did. The 85' Bears D was so good that the 86's Giants D is often overlooked but they were dominant.

They were monsters of the midway as they used to say but no division dominated like the eastern division in those days. Btw LT broke Theismann leg in 85' at RFK. Amazingly Jay Schroeder replaced him that night and actually pulled off the win. I really miss those days.
i remember the night well. I was at a Bruce Springsteen concert, ironically at Giants Stadium. Didn't realize the conflict at the time. As soon as I left the show I met some friends at a sports bar. You gotta remember LT was drafted in 1981 and the QB sack didn't become an official statistic till 1982. Unfortunately there are a lot of great pass rushers who will never get the statistical recognition and credit they deserve from before 1982 because of that. With LT due to this reason it is believed there is probably somewhere between 15 and 20 sacks he doesn't get credit for.

LT was incredible. Just wondering what he would be like in today’s league. No tackles were really kick stepping back - they just kind of back pedaled. I mean this is all due to his technique coming off the edge in the 5 technique. The league completely had to re-write entire offenses in order to deal with him!

@@stephenkinq5425, you have to say, because of Lawrence Taylor, certain players like Ronnie Lott and Rickey Jackson were obscured by Taylor’s brilliance. As a rookie cornerback, Lott bagged 7 interceptions, 3 of them were pick-6s, and he was the best player on a 49er defense that won the Super Bowl and Taylor shut Lott out for DROTY and DPOTY. Rickey Jackson was the most dominant 3-4 LOLB in the NFL during the 1980s. He was better than Andre Tippett over the long-term and his career numbers prove this out. No LOLB who played on the strong side had Jackson’s numbers.
Today's players benefit from better coaching, better understanding of technique, better nutrition, better science, however, if LT were around today, he'd have the benefit of all those things too. So yes, he'd still kick everyone's ass. He had some abilities you can't teach.

I used to watch all those Giant games with my Dad. Before LT if you had to go to the bathroom, you went when the Giant D was on the field. After LT, you went when the O was on the field. Also Madden & Summerall had the Giant games on CBS!

When I watched LT high lites, it was like the footage was slowed down for all the players around him. He was in a different place. Imagine if LT actually worked out with weights etc. What you saw was all natural. Never be another.

I was lucky enough to see four games on the 35 yd line of LT’s rookie year and it was absolutely crazy to watch three offensive players try to block him. LT would use the last one to batter that last blocker into the QB, really pick him up by his shoulder pads and launch him into Joe Theisman! So much fun to see a total reckless abandon player unleashed on unsuspecting professional football teams!

You can't compare stats from then to now, it doesn't mean anything. LT was unique - other teams didn't just double or triple team him. Other teams were scared of him. He physically punished the opposition. There are interviews on youtube with Hall of Famers who talk about how they were scared of him. Micah is a tremendous talent, maybe a generational talent, but he doesn't command that level of fear in his opponents. No one else in the history of the NFL has.
