Bio diesel emits exactly as much CO2 as regular diesel. The difference is that the carbon came from the air in the first place rather than from fossil sources. So it's not increasing the CO2 in the air. Like the difference between burning coal and burning trees.
well. as a fair comparison you have to consider the energy and cost of extracting crude oil from underground, shipping it to wherever you are, and the energy used to turn it into usable oil as well. I think fundamentally the argument is that biodiesel is more "carbon neutral" as it introduces less CO2 into the air.

It's fine in a 20year old Volvo but will kill a new Ford Focus. The acidity needs to be controlled too as biodiesel eats the rubber seals and fuel pumps are not cheap. We can already make SAFE & CHEAP synthetic oils and diesel fuels, so why does SHELL, ESSO etc rely on the Middle East so much? We could stop buying oil from them right now.
In my plant we have an anaerobic digester to deal with the food waste, then the biogas produced is burnt using CHP engine to produce power and heat. We use this to power sre production and we also recover a lot of the heat for other processes on the plant

Seems to me that the amount of energy wasted on Collection, filtering and processing of the oil will be larger than then gained energy.
How do we know that the oil collection truck isnt run on biodiesel? There are far better and more efficient ways to go about producing biodiesel but still this is likely far less expensive than collecting, refining and transporting regular diesel all over the country (being that this could be made locally)

Humanity should have done much more with this technique. You can run your diesel 100% clean on it. We would not need Tesla's and lithium batteries.

You're right. it COULD be more envirounmental friendly than traditional fuel, but most often is not.

There's a few different catalyst that can work. I think the most common is sodium hydroxide (caustic soda, lye).
