Listening to CSN&Y I never really heard his voice stand out until years later when I found out 'Almost Cut My Hair' was his song and him singing. Stills, Nash & Young have very distinctive voices and are easy to pick out who's who in a song. I attribute this to Crosby's outstanding harmonizing ability. Now I hear it in all their songs.
Its great to listen again how one of my favorite groups formed; what I really want to know is the group really dead. Can Crosby and Nash put the relationship back together? Goodbye to my friends of 50 plus years! Its been fun. I learned so much from you guys.
Crosby, by all accounts, could be a real asshole and most of the acrimony surrounding the band centered on him usually but I do like his self-awareness and honesty. In every interview I've seen of him, he never hesitates to give credit to the talent of his bandmates and has a sense of humility in the process.
I grew up in the late-60s early 70s with cool semi-hippie parents who played great music in our house where CSN and CSNY were prominent, and had a 2nd wave of appreciation a couple decades later. Great group/s tremendous music, make no mistake. But when they are documented as "rock stars" maybe a head-shake. Aside from a few plugged-in anthems they were not a rock band per se, more like a gathering of folk music harmony singers and story-tellers with some electric but more acoustic instruments. Now in my mid-50s I'm a land owner with a fine house and two cats in the yard so the legacy continues... ;-)

That was filmed at Monkee Peter Tork's house, where they were rehearsing for their first tour. Stills wanted the band to play outside (which Tork had warned them not to do, because it would lead to a drug bust), and Crosby refused to. Stills got angry and quoted Crosby's lyric back at him, accusing him of being a hypocrite. Luckily, the cops simply told them to stop playing outside and didn't use the moment as an excuse to go looking for drugs.
