  • www.kickitin.com KICK IT IN® with Fran Kick presenting a district-wide program to parents and academic volunteers. The educational world, ever since "A Nation At Risk" was released, has strived and struggled to help our kids succeed at a higher level by programming them in schools vs. helping kids figure things out for themselves. Perhaps "teaching to the test" more than "teaching them to learn" has limited how our kids learn from their own mistakes, organize things for themselves, and deal with failure. Sure, we want kids to be improving and always getting better. But if someone else is always setting things up for them or telling them what to do, when to do, and how they're doing, how will kids develop the ability to make things happen on their own?
"Helicopter parents" or "helicopter parenting" innocently starts with well-meaning, caring parents who sometimes end up overprinting. Taken to the extreme as kids get older, Fran jokes about parents calling their son or daughter's professor to complain about a quiz grade they received in class at college.
