I'm rocking a super cheap tarp at the moment. I don't trust it will hold through many storms and there are limited tie off points. I always had my eye on DD tarps but since Alton goods brought out their version it's a clear winner. I will definitely be grabbing one of these in the future. Nice review mate.
Yeah I was looking at DD as well, from what I saw when comparing it seemed about the same in relation to size, weight and tieout points. Decided to support local and try Alton. I was rocking a OzTrail Hikers Fly for the past 6 off years with no complaints other than limited tie outs.
I think DD have slightly less tie outs. I do like that DD have more of a variety in sizes. I'm hoping Alton consider adding a larger tarp to its arsenal.

I reckon 4 months on the river (including winter) is going to throw all sorts of weather at me, and wind is my least favourite, so a square tarp that can be put up in lots of ways is a must. Then I'll just have do search a few more RUclips videos to work out how to put it up in lots of ways :).

Do you use it without the bug net for sleeping over night? I have the Alton goods tarp which is awesome but I don’t know if I should get their hammock to match especially when the bug net is extra. The hammock I have currently has a built in bug net and I got it at clearance for $25 bucks which I’m now realising was a bit of a score. Also what is that orange tie out plus toggle situation? That looks quite handy because I also create a ridge line with cordage the whole way across too
Sorry Jack, I thought I did reply to your comment. Down here during summer the bugs can be pretty brutal, especially where I donsome of my camping. So I'll have that bug net unless it's winter. That said, a Thermacell worked well on my last trip and I could get away without the bug net with that. The red loops on my ridgeline are prusik knots. Allows them to move along the ridge line when there is no pressure, but as soon as there is something pulling against it, it will bite and stay in place. I'll do a bit of a video on it next time I'm using the ridgeline.
Thanks mate. The pegs are alright. They're nice and light yet strong. Not quite long enough for soft/sandy soil, but if you've got a knife handy, it doesn't take long to fashion up a few long pegs from sticks.
From the website I suspect it’s only 280cm long, it did look short… I think for a decent diagonal lay you’d normally be wanting longer than that, more like 330cm
Thanks mate. Im 5ft10 and found it was more than enough length to it. You can see in the opening clips of me laying in it. Hopefully that gives you a bit of a reference to go off.
Super expensive for a made in China hammock. Was iteraly about to pull the trigger when I called and they admitted its all made In china. Aussie owned not Aussie made.
Honestly who cares where it’s made. If it was made in Australia it would be harder to get and 5x the price Nothing wrong with made in China it’s just about quality control and Alton have shown they have good QC processes It’s still an Aussie owner and you’re still supporting the Aussie economy rather than getting it from overseas directly or supporting a huge company like Anaconda/BCF etc Supporting Aussie made is great when you can, but don’t forget the owner is still an Aussie bloke in Brisbane working his ass off, much better to support him than the owner of spotlight retail group or other corporations
I have all of the things in this set ip including the rain fly and bug net. It cost me 50 bucks. For all of it. I have used it for the last year it's been amazing. Add a 30 dollar sleeping pad and you can winter camp comfortable. You do what you want with your money. I'm just saying this sort of stuff is over priced. If you don't mind paying for it. Go for it.

3x3m is a good size for me, but a lightweight 5x5m would be good hey

Have you ever found that you need insulation of anykind with the hammock in australia? like a mat or underquilt?
Alton make a quilt for use with their hammock
During the cooler months im my area, underquilt or mat would be best used for a comfortable nights sleep.

Yeah you can lay diagonally in it. Not sure what you mean by prefer to add a ridgeline. I was using a ridgeline for the tarp above the hammock.

How tall are you mate? Reading hammock reviews makes me wonder if I'm too tall for this one.
I'm 175cm or 5'10" in the old measurement. Scotty's Gone Walkabouts uses the same hammock and he's about 6'2" going by when I saw him a bit back.

My 20 dollar made in China hammock is better. Made in China is fine. I'm just not paying premium for a basic hammock.
