    I stick with my theory that Fluttershy isn't just speaking metaphorically with some of those examples. We know pranking is a common thing on Nightmare Night and Flutters was bullied really badly when she was little. She could very easily be speaking from experience.

    I can't agree with Voice's take on the moral; even though there ARE times you have to "suck it up," we're talking about *activities during a holiday.* If all your friends were going bowling, and you HATED bowling, and they all knew and were fine with you not hanging out with them for ONE DAY because of your hatred for bowling... why would you have to go?

    "oh no, not this lesson again"
    I'm sorry, but this "flaw" in Fluttershy (and other characters) is why I like her and relate to her. She never gets the lesson once. She has to go through it a couple times for it to kick in.
    You will never go through a lesson once and have it completely stick. No. Life don't work like that for most people.

      Honestly, I was slightly offended when they called her stupid for having a small anxiety attack. I’m and autistic, hearing sensitive person, who has gotten these kinds of “what if” moments play through my head, just by opening the dishwasher and seeing the knives (the “what if I fall and stab myself” thought), and it honestly makes me nervous when holding it. So calling the poor girl “stupid” for having anxiety issues is very mean and ignorant

    Fluttershy was being stupid, but not in a way that hurts the episode I think. • @codybratsch
    @codybratsch 7 лет назад +150

    Sometimes you gotta suck it up? Yeah, but not to celebrate a holiday you don't care for because others do. I mean, seriously, I don't celebrate Valentine's Day for anyone. There are some things you really don't have to do if you don't want to. I think the sometimes was implied heavily here since they were specifically talking about celebrating Nightmare Night (AKA Halloween). We've seen Fluttershy do several things she didn't want to do before, like say, go to confront a big, scary dragon in Season 1.
    It's more balanced in the grand scheme of things if you think about it. Yeah, sometimes you gotta suck it up, but sometimes no you don't. To me, the episode was clearly implying that only sometimes you don't have to do things you don't want to do, which is still very true and valid. Thus, I can't really say I agree with Voice of Reason on this one. But I still have a tremendous amount of respect for him.

    • @ninjaoflight908
      @ninjaoflight908 7 лет назад +9

      Yeah, I feel like we've already covered doing things you don't want to do but have to. Like performance flying publicly. Fluttershy has nailed that one by the Equestria Games.
      Plus, the episode specifically brought up how Fluttershy already does several fun things with her friends, as well as the fact that her friends were cool with her not participating in the first place.

      codybratsch yeah considering that Fluttershy does hang out her friends all time and there are other festivities all the time in Equestria . One holiday is not make that much of a difference. codybratsch Although it is good to go out of your comfort zone once in a while. But it is up to the person/pony who wanted to do something or not. I mean, that we have free will. And we can do basically anything that we all are capable enough to do things, moves etc.
      But if you had been hanging around your friends for a long time, they wouldn't mind if you don't want to do one of the things that your friends wanted to do things together with you. Just like friends play on a action packed game while you wanted to play on a puzzle game (for an example).

    • @arcsparkasriel
      @arcsparkasriel 7 лет назад +2

      All of what everyone said about not having to do things that aren't your preference would be a good moral.......If Fluttershy was a normal pony. We have to remember that she's not just a regular citizen, she's part of a group that is essentially the last line of defense for Equestria when the princesses and everyone else fail. She can't afford to be scared or be consumed by fear and paranoia when an intimidating threat comes her way. What was that quote from Green Lantern that was one of the only good parts about that god awful movie? Oh yeah,
      "When your afraid, you can't act, when you can't act, you can't defend, when you can't defend, you die."
      If she can't be brave enough to go through something like Nightmare Night, how can she be brave enough to face any dark force that threatens Equestria?

    I disagree whole-heartily about the "suck it up" issue. Yes, there are things in life you will have to do, but putting "social events with friends" on that list is the extroverted pressure that introverts have been fighting against for a while. Just because your friends care about something does not mean you have to. And yes, saying "no" might hurt their feelings, but they should be able to respect you enough to take rejection from an activity that you knowingly hate. Anyone who can't take me saying "I don't want to do that" is expecting the wrong thing out of friendship.

      Shady Doorags Though I see where you're coming from, you don't always have the choice. Saying "no" to a friend or family member who knows better than to do that, I can clearly see, but to a boss who knows nothing about you personally or authoritarian? That may just lead to you being fired, or worse. So, in some cases, you are correct, but in others, you need to learn to suck it up. Life ain't always fair and people need to learn that. Was this the best way to approach the topic? F---k no. Absolutely not. But, at the same time, I do respect what both you and the show had to say and I see your point of view on this. But, all in all, I still agree with Mr.Voice of Reason.

    • @ShadyDoorags
      @ShadyDoorags 7 лет назад +44

      StoryTheShadow 563 I specified in my comment that there will indeed be times when you have to do something you're uncomfortable with, but I (and the episode) was specifically talking about social events with friends. A moment like "your boss telling you to go to a social gathering" is a completely different scenario. And in the review, Voice and Brand were also talking about hanging out with friends, with Brand saying that the consequences of such actions would be acknowledgement that you do not care about your relationships, which is not the case especially to an introvert.
      Fluttershy tried to do something with her friends and found out she didn't like doing it. That's the context of the episode. Anything outside of that is pushing a narrative the episode wasn't addressing.

      Agreed. You can't turn down every invitation to socialize, but you certainly can turn down some of them. When my friends go to the movies, or the beach, or to dinner, I go with them. That's the kind of socialization I enjoy. But if they go out drinking, I stay home, because it's not my thing. If there's a reason I have to go, like a birthday celebration, then I'll obviously join them, but otherwise I choose to remain home.

    Points of lolz:
    *internal liberal screaming*
    Lack of KH3 rage
    Disney princesses are druids
    Voice's face at the Balor being in the basement
    Josh's "pet" vioce
    I do have a counter for the kill joy thing. While it's true you shouldn't ruin the illusion to be a jerk, it can help calm people down who are legitimately terrified. I remember going through a haunted house with a friend who was gripping my arm so hard my fingers were turning blue. We come up to this staircase and she freaks out that something might come out and try to scare us and I tell her nothing will. "How do you know?!!" "Because we're going up a flight of stairs. If they scare someone and they lose their footing and fall down the stairs, they've got a HUGE lawsuit on their hands." She calmed down enough for me to get a little blood in my pinkie finger.
    As an introvert corrected to be an extrovert... I'm gunna have to lean more toward siding with Josh here. This episode reminds me of the friends who don't like rollercoasters... but still come with us to Six Flags. They'll sit outside with our bags a lot of the time and they'll be in charge of all non-rollercoaster related things (where we should eat, when we should take a break and hang at the arcade for a while, etc.). And sometimes we'll have someone else sit out with them for things that might be a little too daredevil even for the braver ones (I'm not a huge fan of roller coasters with too many loops). We still enjoy having them come with us and hang but we're not going to force them go on Goliath if they're afraid of heights or something.
    P.S. Josh bashing Rarity and defending Fluttershy... What is life?

  • @Midnight3Wonder

    Sorry, Voice, but I can completely understand where Fluttershy is coming from. When I was in the fifth grade and just starting out middle school in a brand new area with unfamiliar people, I managed to make a few friends who told me about an upcoming Halloween party being held at the high school even though it was for the middle schoolers. Apparently, the whole dance was a big project for the high schoolers. I had never been to a Halloween dance before but was really excited about it as I've always wanted to go to one. I went to dance all dressed up (can't remember as what) and met up with all my friends at the dance as planned and was ready to have the time of my life. Unfortunately, they pointed out a makeshift haunted house the high schoolers had made and were working at and we all decided to go throw it. Now, since this was made by the high schoolers and they had limited options, they made the haunted house entirely out of cardboard which forced us to go through it on our hands and knees. It was fun at first but some of the students got a little too into it and accidentally grabbed me a few times. This really freaked me out and made me so terrified of continuing. They actually had to let me out only halfway through the haunted house because I was simply bawling out of fear by then. Even when my friends tried comforting me, I was absolutely scarred by the experience and wasn't able to enjoy the rest of the dance. I even had to leave early. I got sick not long after this and was still recovering from what happened, so it wasn't such a pleasant sight when I saw some of the more "scary-looking" decor at our house when I finally felt well enough to leave bed. I just about had a heart attack when I saw the fake paper mummy on the door. Ever since then, I haven't been able to enjoy Halloween and even became terrified every time the holiday came up. This makes me really sad as Halloween is one of if not not my favorite holiday of all time and has been for nearly my entire life. For a while, I kept thinking that something horrible would happen much like how Fluttershy kept worrying over things that might as well have been nothing. Seeing this episode was a bit of a slap to the face for me. In Fluttershy's case, that was quite literal thanks to Rarity and her merpony tail. So, while others and even myself at times saw Fluttershy's frets as bad writing or utter stupidity, it was in fact very true to how I was when I went through this phase. I've gotten a lot better with it as time went on and, like Fluttershy, forced myself to get back into it so that no one else's fun would be ruined because of me. I'm even able to go into Halloween stores now, just not by myself nor without someone at my side at all times. However, I must still take my time with it as it's not something I can overcome just like that after what I've been through. So, now having said all this, it makes me wonder if Fluttershy may have had a similar experience when she was a filly that led to her fear of Nightmare Night. After all, all phobias stem from somewhere and, if were to be able to explore what might have caused her fear of the holiday someday, I think it'd be a pretty good lesson for those who do not have phobias a mock others for things that they don't find scary but may be absolutely horrifying to others. If anypony can have an episode centered on teaching others about fears or phobias, it's Fluttershy!

Fluttershy did try to go out of her comfort zone and she suck it up and tried something she didn't like with her friends. In the end she didn't like it and it was ok. The moral is more like "It is ok to not like to do something that your friends like but at times you should at least give it a try before deciding you don't like it or not." Still a good episode and I still liked this video. Also lol you named it Fluffy XD

    Call me a softie, but one of the reasons this episode was one of my favorites of Season 5 was because Fluttershy didn't take a 180° by the end. Just because you learn a lesson about walking out of your comfort zone doesn't mean you have to be an extrovert all of a sudden, and the ending bit reflected just that. Having it played the other way around would be like one of those generic Heel-Face turns in professional wrestling. So, no. I dont think Fluttershy pressed the reset button on her character after this.

    To the debate of flutters by poking holes in everything she's offered to try, I believe this is a decent representation of anxiety. Speaking from personal experience here so it may be a bit biased, but often when I'm in public and I want to go do a thing, my brain immediately plays multiple scenarios of how it could wrong in the worst possible way. This often gives me an anchor effect that trying said thing is not a good idea and it would be better for everyone if I didn't do it. And the way she says it, to me it seems like it does lean on the more extreme and outlandish side, but the thing is our brains know us better than we do, going back to the scenarios, my mind would play them in a way that they would seem plausible, not outright impossible and overexagerated, so to me, her reasons are her anxiety making a successful sales pitch as to why doing those things is a bad idea, because her mind played them in a way it knew she would react strongly to. And even when we do try and bite the bullet, we have our limits, we're not gonna be able to do everything offered, and we may even want to quit halfway through, this doesn't mean we don't want to try, but wanting to participate doesn't make biting the bullet any easier. I simply ask to respect our progress and support us as we try to get farther than we did the next time we try.

    I loved this Ep, and yeah the CMC's Cutie Marks is 1 reason I don't watch Eps out of order------UNTIL PERFECT PEAR AIRED EARLY and yeah I was not getting spoiled on that one.
    You know I do agree with that Rarity really should had fixed the dress. It's her character to do that, and here she just obeyed Fluttershy and allowed her to wear what she wanted...which suppose is also in character with the Ep.
    They don't want Fluttershy to feel pressured so they hold back to the point where Fluttershy felt bad for making the night unfun for them. I have to wonder, was Fluttershy scared because she used to be easily scared or was there a childhood moment that ruined the night for her?
    Either way she is still my fave of the Mane6 and love the callback to Flutterbat. Remember in that Ep they cut away before her fangs fully reformed and showed she still had them. Seems like they aren't forgetting that anytime soon.

    Whenever people review this episode, I get a migraine...
    It seems this migraine was not wrong...
    First off... What makes you so sure Fluttershy is written out of character? Think of this scenario: Fluttershy's fear in this episode was caused by a past trauma during Nightmare Night. She got pranked all day and all night. Think of what that would do to her psyche, and then ask yourself this question: Is that scenario, as a reason for her not trusting anything in the first half of the episode (costumes, candy, games), ANY LESS PLAUSIBLE than "Fluttershy's being stupid here"? If you answered "yes" to that, you are the stupid one.
    Now, the mask... To someone in Fluttershy's state of mind, Imagine your peripherals are blocked. You can only see what's directly in front of you. As it just so happens, a Halloween tryhard is standing right beside you wearing an absolutely terrifying costume. You cannot see them, because they are in you peripherals, which are now blocked because of the mask. You turn your head. Suddenly, you see that horrifying costume right in front of you, which was not there seconds ago, or so you thought. Keep in mind, you are currently in Fluttershy's state of mind: Absolutely terrified. Now what is your reaction? If you are any kind of calm, you either have the reaction time of a tortoise, or that wasn't a costume and some creepy monster just shishkebabed you in the brain, permanently damaging your frontal lobe and permanently removing any sense of fear. And sorry to tell you, Fluttershy does not have the reaction time of a tortoise.
    "Those things that terrify you are equally valid concerns on a day of NOT tonight!" Okay, that line was very cleverly written, and downright hilarious, but Nightmare Night, as you blatantly shouted at the beginning of the video, is Halloween. "I can understand phobias... I can understand paranoia... But this? This is not those." This is both of those. Samhainophobia. That is a real thing. Look it up. See what it says. See how illogical your statement has suddenly become. People have a legitimate fear of the day itself, and your comment is incredibly insensitive to those people.
    The moral... is NOT about doing things you don't want to do. I have actually never heard that argument before. A few of the top comments explain why that isn't the case, so I'm not gonna go into detail.
    Seriously... someone besides Keyframe do this episode a favor already!

      The first thing gives the same excuse that star wars seven through nine gave out, and with the phobia, I agree entirely, but the traumatic event could have been hinted towards, along with the fact that the episode style should allow for a viewer to get that kind of information as needed, and please don't blast firebrand for this; I know it's just one google search away but that A phobia is particular and obscure, not the kind of thing you think exists on a dime, and if he did, then he would've searched it up; an issue like this is obscenely particular, not something you consider when trying to be inoffensive: still, the points you make ring entirely true on multiple levels. Still, you have to consider the title is taking things too seriously. Did you think that in between scriptwriting and video editing that they would feel an extremely niche worldview and continue to do the haha? You were right in ways that could be considered wrong, and right in the right ways seems to me you were taking this too seriously.

    Well, Pinkie was going by general preferences. She probably didn't take into account the difference on Nightmare Night. It's a surprise to all of them just how scared Fluttershy is right now, and the way in which she is scared. She's only hid before, rather than sharing her actual feelings about the night, which I think actually do include more (or at least different) fears than usual. But that isn't fleshed out, and may not have been what Hasbro intended.

    I think you two were a bit too harsh on Pinkie and Rarity. You're assuming that because Rarity is a seamstress, she can just get rid of every flaw Fluttershy sees in a costume? You know if they did that it would end up looking like that black dress she wore. She did the smart thing and had a large selection of different outfits and different styles for Fluttershy to look at for which was more comfortable.
    And Pinkie Pie is stupid because she knows Fluttershy likes taffy? Are you being serious?
    Those are just Fluttershy's phobias clouding her decisions, like they do the whole episode. I mean, come on guys, we know Fluttershy would wear dresses, she's been to a wedding and the Gala. But now all of her fears are making her paranoid about every single detail. And Fluttershy KNEW there would be taffy in the bag, so she likes eating taffy. Again, her paranoia clouds her judgement.
    Minus 50 points from Gryffindor... Each.

    To be perfectly honest Scare Master is one episode I quite enjoy because it helped me conquer an old fear. For years I've been terrified of Bonfire Night, which happens around the same time as Halloween every year and celebrates the failed Gunpowder plot by Guy Fawkes. I use to avoid it because Fireworks scare me(Call me a Fluttershy all you want) but after watching this episode I went down to the Fireworks display on Bonfire night. It scared me half to death but I tried and I was proud of myself. So this episode helped me get over it....and no I won't be going near the Bonfire night this year! I'm a coward...so there!

    Fluttershy's behavior in this episode of MLP FIM is exactly how anxiety feels (at least, how it feels to me, someone with an anxiety disorder). It's a spiral of your brain telling you all these horrible worst case scenarios and "what if" scenarios. It makes you think and behave irrationally in order to cope and if you don't it only gets worse. From an outside perspective, it seems stupid and irrational, but to the person experiencing the anxiety, it is very much real.

    I had to disagree with the ending point. It's just that some things cause you anxieties and discomfort to the point where you're more or less paralyzed. Thus you have to decline. I've gone through this on a daily basis and can honestly say I relate to her struggles on an intimate level. This kind of struggle is a massive weakness and ok, so maybe I'm stupid for it, but... *We're not flawless*... remember?
    If you personally hold yourself to such a standard that you want to at least 'suck it up', even for the respect of others, good on you. But that's not necessarily an ideal.
    This is why I hate the "Fluttershy never learns anything" complaint. Look, I'm glad you're lucky enough you've been able to get over whatever adversity you encountered the first time you learned from it and you don't have to endure the suffocating stuggles of excessive introvercy, but *this is an authentic issue for some people*. How do I know? Because I go through *the exact same thing*.
    I have learned several lessons in coming out of my shell but I do have often a tendency to RELAPSE and to decide that maybe the *safer option is the better one*.
    These things that Fluttershy does HAPPEN. ACTUALLY. And I'm living proof.
    We need to stop confusing progress with personality as well. Oh dear fluffy Persians, this is a GINORMOUS issue.
    And my friends will even commit it with me in real life.
    While I have come out of my shell a whole lot, being introverted and anxious and afraid of silly things are actually still to an extent *part of my nature*. So while some things come easier to me, others I relapse into. And this can appear like a contradiction of character. But it's not.
    For someone who goes through the exact same struggles as Fluttershy it is SO frustrating to see people complaining. I'm sorry we can't fit your mold of how a person should realistically grow :/

    How was there any issue with the moral? Where did it say anything Voice went off on it about? What is one single solitary reason Fluttershy should force herself to do this one thing that she tried, and simply did not like, and had no reason to have to do?
    Also, yeah Fluttershy was even more scared then normal, that's how fear works. She was paranoid about the night, had spent years thinking up every possible thing that could go wrong, every little thing about it that scares her, of course she's going to be more tense and spooked then normal. Yes they did push it a bit too far still, but it does mostly make sense.

      Chronic anxiety is being afraid of things you KNOW aren't going to happen. It's your brain constantly throwing shit at you and making you flinch. It makes you afraid to participate in things, because your brain is constantly telling you how everything will go wrong, it's going to be your fault, and everyone will hate you for it. Controlling it takes a lot of effort and, since it's often paired with chronic depression, some days you just don't have the strength to fight back.

      Several, though few from any of the later seasons, mostly the usual Merriwether Williams set of just, "She really does not get how to write for this show" of MMDW, PYHD, and SAYS. I found Fame and Misfortune to be a horribly meanspirted and cynical, while also poorly written episode, not for the 'message' but just for how badly it holds up as a linear narrative, and how overall meanspirited it came off being at odds with the overall optimistic bent of the show. But for the most part, not really, even the clearly flawed eps tend to have something of worth, or are cases of good ideas just given poor execution.

    This was NOT something she had to 'suck up and do'; this was not an obligation, it was a night out with friends. And, because this is Equestria, then all she has to do is wait 24-72 hours and Boom, there will be another holiday or festival in town to celebrate with her friends.

    Tbh, despite being a massive introvert (more like a hermit honestly), I kinda agree that “sometimes you gotta suck it up,” at least to an extent. I mean, it’s fine to chill in solitude the majority of the time, but sometimes it’s just polite/considerate to go out of your comfort zone for the sake of your friends and family, even if you REALLY don’t want to. It at least shows that you care. But to be fair, you can set limits. Like, if you really can’t handle massive parties or something, it’s fine to decline or at least show up for a short period of time.
    Ultimately though, there should be balance. Introverts and Extroverts should be willing to respect the other’s wishes and limits, but also be willing to sacrifice their own personal desires from time to time and go out of each other’s comfort zones (if only a little) for the sake of the other. No side should have more power over the other.

    How can they not recognize the genius of Fluttershy’s tea party of terror? It’s the first time I’ve seen someone lay out the issues and fears someone who’s anxious or socially awkward deal with in the face of hosting an event. How everything that can go wrong, goes wrong even if those things don’t seem disastrous. And then having your guests arrive before you can fix anything and being subject to the silent pressure and judgment from them, perceived or not. It’s every introverts nightmare in regards to social interaction realized. Sure, it’s not conventionally scary and is worse when it’s internalized but it doesn’t dismiss the fact that it’s accurate. And extremely in character for Fluttershy. Not to mention a great wasted opportunity for a lesson on why introverts and the like have issues with social interaction.

    "Suck it up"
    I'm sorry, but I STRONGLY disagree with this. As an introvert who struggles with PTSD, I'd like to ask you a question. Why am I and other introverts expected to "Suck it up?"
    I had so many friends that I have lost over the years because I was constantly "sucking it up" for them, going out to places that made me extremely scared or uncomfortable...but they couldn't be bothered to do the same for me. So why is it that only the introverts seem to be expected to "Suck it up?"
    And ask for fluttershy? Fluttershy steps out of her comfort zone all the time to be with her friends but because she can't handle this ONE night, the moral is "you don't have to do ANYTHING you don't want too" honestly even if it is, I believe real GOOD friends won't ask/force you to do something that makes you uncomfortable.
    So "Suck it up?"
    As an extrovert, you have NO room to demand that from an introvert.

For an episode with a moral like this, I think it'd be worth it to reinforce the idea of "baby steps". Otherwise, it's sort of like saying "not only should you try doing something with your friends that you don't like, but you should also dive into it head-first with no room to breath."

    Actually, the mask thing makes sense. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blinkers_(horse_tack)
    If you've got a mask (blinders) on, you can only focus on what's right in front of you rather than anything in the periphery. So when you're in a hypothetical situation where your life is in danger ('Cause you know, "Fluttershy paranoia"), survival is ensured when you can see as much as possible with as few encumberments as possible. As was demonstrated in the haunted maze near the end of the episode when Fluttershy puts that hypothetical situation into practice.

  • @Symbolic-Sky

    As a person with anxiety disorder and autism I was a lot like Fluttershy on Halloween. My class would watch jump scare videos and hell my teacher had us watch Mr.Boogedy and other R.L or Are You Afraid Of the Dark type shows around the season and I often had to sit out in the hall or do something else because I'd be too scared and people would laugh and make fun of me. At the time I hadn't yet been diagnosed with anything other than anxiety and even if I had been my school wasn't exactly progressive. I think people should learn to be more sensitive to people like me or flutters. It's perfectly fine to say you yourself love being scared but, don't EVER tell someone "That's not even scary" or "It's not that bad you're just being dramatic" because in the mind of the person feeling that anxiety that's the same as saying "Oh you broke your arm? That doesn't actually hurt you're just being a drama queen. Suck it up baby!" Which is how people or ponies like flutters can end up avoiding the situation all together in fear of being chastised. The best advise I can give if you have a friend who suffers from a mental disorder or form of anxiety that interferes with this kind of activity it's like this. Be patient and understanding, listen to them if they tell you that they can't do something and don't pressure them to go too far beyond that limit. I've had friends who laughed at me because of my fears and because of that I ended up drifting away from them because my brain told me "I can't hang out with them, they want to do this thing that triggers my anxiety and I can't do it without looking like a coward."

    I don't have a problem with Fluttershy's fears in this episode because when I was a kid my fears about one Halloween were just as irrational to the point where I didn't even want to go down the street to trick or treat. I had really bad allergies and was afraid that I would get sick somehow if I wasn't in the house. My parents made me face my fears by asking me to go down the street with them to trick or treat but didn't push me to do more than that one house. In the years to come I began to love Halloween and both my allergies and confidence improved. Fluttershy may seem overly paranoid, but irrational fears can seem extremely justified to the person who has them at the time. Fluttershy did something she was extremely afraid of and just didn't enjoy the activity, but she faced her fears and now has more confidence, that's the takeaway for me from the episode.

    "Don't be a fucking killjoy?" Dude, I am autistic; I can kill the joy without really meaning to. I can't read social situations like normal people can, and it's already hard enough to pass through life without pissing *someone* off. I have enough to be concerned about without having to worry whether or not I'm raining on someone's parade. So until I can figure out which way is up, sorry, you gotta deal with the downpour. But hey, if it makes you feel any better, I'll do what I can to avoid getting you *too* wet.

  • @brigidtheirish

    To be fair to Rarity, making alterations takes time and they only have a few minutes.
    And for Fluttershy, I've been in situations where I'm uncomfortable with dang near everything and come up with really stupid excuses involving minutia because it's hard to articulate the larger problem.
    Social anxiety: it makes idiots of us all.

  • @SilverScaleMA
    @SilverScaleMA 7 лет назад +11

    I actually really associate with Fluttershy because I have the exact same problem. I try really hard and have trained myself to get past my anxiety but there are certain events that will trigger it and more often or not it doesn't make sense even to me. I know that I have already gotten past it before and that a social event shouldn't bother me anymore. But I just want to either curl up in a corner away from everyone, break out crying, or in the very worst case lash out at someone verbally. Severe social anxiety is not something you just get over, it takes years, if not decades to train yourself to not break down in a social setting. Even then, while I do like that I get to spend time with my friends and see and experience new things, I usually end up going home afterwards and having a meltdown of all the stress I felt and kept bottled in while around others. And that is a vast improvement for me just the fact that I can hold it off until I get home and not wherever I was before. Also, not all events are the same, some I have no problems with at all and others I almost always end up having some form of meltdown, either at the event or once I get away. It is hard for someone who does not have the issue to understand just how hard it is just to take the small steps, let alone get to the point where you can look confident when inside you just want to hide.

    • @brigidtheirish
      @brigidtheirish 7 лет назад +1

      I feel ya. I've got anxiety disorder and one of my sisters has avoidant personality disorder. Any social interaction is stressful for us, especially if it involves multiple people. I haven't gone to the family get-togethers for the last several years in large part because I just can't handle all the noise and moving bodies. Even with the way attendance dropped off after Grandma died. So it's stressful *and* depressing.
      Interestingly, I've really enjoyed the few conventions I've attended. I think it helps that things are usually spread out more and there's always some quiet area of the hotel where I can curl up and decompress.

    • @SilverScaleMA
      @SilverScaleMA 7 лет назад

      brigidtheirish yes, the decompression is vital... If I know that I can crash afterwards I can usually get through it but it is still close sometimes.

    I think we are forgetting the biggest issue with the episode, which was lightly touched upon by Josh, granted, but Flutteryshy does not act this way at any other time. Fluttershy is acting like she is in real danger on Nightmare Night. The concerns she expresses are widely applicable to any other time of the year... if you expect that you are in danger and someone or something is out to get you. Not being able to flee when chased, incapable of detecting threats, being left vulnerable; those are the things she is worried about.
    None of Fluttershy's friends tried to comfort or reassure Fluttershy that she is safe; instead just going along with her unfounded fears out of respect so as to not discourage her from accompanying them. By neglecting to do that, Fluttershy will continue to treat a rather harmless holiday with fear, anxiety, and try to hide as though she was legitimately threatened. That's not healthy, and everyone deserves a Stupid Point for going along with Fluttershy's paranoia instead of trying to help her resolve it.

  • @Mr.Inktail

    The main issue I have with this episode is that there was ONE activity of Nightmare Night Fluttershy didn't try.

    As someone who gets paranoid easily and has severe Anxiety, I honestly get Fluttershy with this.
    It kinda hurt when he stomped all over her for being too timid and "being stupid". When you're really paranoid/ very anxious you can start to ask the "what if" questions. Even if they don't make sense or sound irrational, I can end up getting nervous about it or question it. And so I end up just not liking it and avoiding it all together.
    🤷‍♂️ So maybe it's just me, but when Voice spoke about how irrational or dumb it was, I got a little frustrated.

    I don't think she's "reset to the beginning of the show" like your guest said she did. Just cause she's geown as a character doesn't mean she has grown out of her fears. Hell, I'm 26 and I'm still freaked out by things like Scorpions and falling from extreme hights and I've never seen one or been up more than a few stories.

    I feel what you guys are talking about when you say, you should step outside of your comfort zone. I never really partied when I was in college. I was fine with just staying in my room for the night and playing on my computer or reading a good book. One times though, my roommate got invited me to a party that was happening. Because I didn't want to be rude, I went to see if it would be any good. I didn't drink, probably one of the very few who didn't, so it was pretty good overall. When I got back, my roommate asked me how it went. I told her it was fine but it really wasn't my thing. I think that helped her understand that I was comfortable staying by myself at night rather than going out. It didn't stop her from inviting me for stuff but she usually only told me about stuff that I would probably be interested in for one reason or another once she learned what I liked. Although I was glad for the experience even if it was only a one time thing.

    This episode aired when my social anxiety pretty much ruled my life and I really identified with Fluttershy in this episode. My friends still asked me to come to parties, but I was always terrified of what they would think of me or what could happen. And I knew it was stupid, just as I knew that some of Fluttershy's thoughts were stupid. But knowing it's stupid kinda made it worse because I felt like such an idiot. A lot has happened since then and my newer friends doesn't believe me when I tell them about my disease, but a part of me is still anxious about things like this. I kinda need this episode to know where I've been and how much I've grown. (sorry for possible bad grammar, I'm swedish)

    About the candy thing with Pinkie 'making a mistake' on the candies for Flutters, how would Pinkie have known Flutters would be like 'ew no chewy' _specifically_ because of nightmare night and the possibility of needing to scream? For all we know, chewy taffies and things like that might be Flutters' favorite kinds of candy. And as Pinkie said, the bags had everypony's favorite candies. Hehe.

    Hey, Voice, horses see better side to side than they do in front of them. Rarity is basically suggesting Fluttershy wear blinkers, which would cut her field of vision by up to 67%, and reduce her depth perception tremendously.

    I'm glad Voice did this collaboration, because he expounded on his problems with the episode that his solo didn't address. I lean toward Josh's view, probably because I'm a introvert, but I believe this moral has many underlying principles. For example, this could apply when you have a friend who doesn't celebrate birthdays or holidays. Now, if it were Dragon Quest, I believe that should have been a suck it up moment for Fluttershy.

    I don't do scary things. I hate scary things. So I kind of understand fluttershy a bit here. Don't get me wrong, I love dressing up for Halloween but if it involves going though a haunted maze or mansion then forget about it. I don't like being scared, heck I cant even watch a scary movie with my girlfriend and she loves those.

    I know this might never be found but I have to share a this story because the theme:
    I went to theater as a education progression, the school I went to had/has an halloween-"walk" thru the older part of town with a few things here and there to make it more spooky.
    The theme that year was "Circus" and i was made to be sort of like that penguin man from Batman (note that i was 170cm/5ft 6in) and my role was to be the backguide; to hurry along the persons who were dragging behind and shoo away the non paying folks. It was my third year being in the walk so I knew what to expect during the round: slow start, actors geting more comfortable with the roles, the f*****s come and try and ruin everything, the sweet hope that is the last round.
    Around the time us actors were getting more comfortable there were a group of preteens that wanted to be tough in front of their friends ( you know the type: the loud smart ass one. One kid particular wanted me to get out character so bad that he came back later to harass me, so i did what everyone would have done... grabbed him by the neck an kissed him on the mouth.
    If anyone think that i did wrong do know:
    1. this prick had continuously been a thorn on the night by not stooping when told to during his guided tour and when he just went in the second time
    2. by the time of the kiss i had 2-3 bad tours before
    3. by the time of the kiss we had done this 1 time of year special night that was planed 2 months in advance FOR 2 HOURS.
    4. this kid had probably never had repercussions of his actions in his short life, and if he told his parents about the kiss he had to explain why i kissed him or if the parents got to ask me about it I had to tell them what their kid did
    5. makes for a good story to tell

    Fluttershy , You don't have to eat the candy now; just take the (yay)ing bag. Also, I didn't understand how Pinkie offering customized bags of candy to her friends was "stupid" on her part; and yes, I'll have to agree on her unreasonable fears during that scene. Nightmare Night jitters perhaps?
