Breaks my heart to hear him say he doesn’t feel like he made any difference on 9/11….he started the day giving blood, which itself is a great act. He could have saved someone that day bc of just doing that. He also was there to support the other firefighters, didnt stay home and say he was brand new and too afraid to go.

The compensation fund is good for anyone who lived or worked near ground zero. It's good for 99 years and anyone who has symptoms can apply and be covered for life. The right thing was done for them, but it's devastating they had to fight so hard for it!

The most infuriating fact is state and federal elected officials maintain their top-drawer health insurance for the rest of their lives... even if they only serve for one term.
First responders, the construction crews and all the residents and businesses who were told they could return to their lives as the air quality was cleared. And have to beg, threaten, plead for assistance.
      Disgraceful!

Hi Rob , I’m watching and listening to your story from Dublin Ireland . I watched the second attack happen live on tv in sept ‘01 and suffer ptsd from just that … I was 8 months pregnant and I thought the world was coming
    to an end!
    You were there!!!
Your first day on the job was horrendous and your bravery is remarkable at 21 yrs of age. You shouldn’t have been there, you were let down from day one by the job you loved.
    Politics.!
Well done to you now for fighting for health care for yourself and your colleagues. Your contribution again is remarkable and yes it should all have been taken care of then and there in 2001 and subsequently and it’s dirty politics , but the buildings were rebuilt in double quick time , again dirty politics...
Take care and stay safe , ☘️🌹❤️

My heart breaks for this man and all the other first responders and victims of 9/11. Every oral history collected from everyone who survived the attack and those families left to carry on are of the uttmost importance to history so future generations don't forget the pain and sacrifice and survival of that day. I know he can't see that right now. But I pray he can some day and that every story of this day is very important.

I don't know how Mr Serra managed to maintain his composure while describing all of this. You can't justify any of this, it's so incredibly unfair. It's hard to hear his story and so many others'. Making him re-live it over and over as though the burden of proof is on him. So disgusting, OMG the circles, the picture of ground zero, disgraceful and it's all real. One of the few things as bad or worse that the actual trauma is to ignore and suppress it. When you shut down a victim or diminish their trauma, you lose a piece of your soul. Money and Ego always seem to take priority far above everything else.

I get cancer and I'm covered, need surgery from an accident, covered etc etc...just because of where I live, without any arguing about who or why my illness occured. It needs to change in the U.S. I know the population is greater but the system isn't working for people. I totally get his anger. That part is not PTSD. That part of him is human natures reaction to failure of the system

Your story is remarkable and you made a difference. Never feel like you didn't. Plus, you're out here talking about the fight that's ongoing for you and all the workers involved who survived the initial catastrophe, and it's so important what you're saying, about getting no help from a government that expected you to run in and risk your lives in a toxic location.
You're absolutely right that so many people in the government don't care, because a lot of them didn't have to sacrifice anything, a lot of them didn't lose loved ones, they themselves are not dealing with these pulmonary and respiratory and cancer issues. All the people up top cared about was spending money on wars and weapons and killing people overseas, and not saving any money aside for trying to take care of genuinely heroic people like yourself and all the responders who are now going through all of these health issues. (And that's obscene for whoever was trying to tell you "it's New York's problem." It's absolutely not! The whole thing goes back decades and decades, with international issues between the US and the Middle East that nobody on the scene at Ground Zero had control over. I don't know the exact timeline, but a lot of the people who died on 9/11 probably weren't even born yet when those tensions started. It's the US government's responsibility at the end of the day, and part of that responsibility includes taking care of the health of all their citizens and rescue workers who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.)
I truly hope things get better for you, because you deserve better, and your family and friends deserve better. Thanks for the insightful interview and telling your story.

As a citizen of the US that donated to the 911 fund this makes me angry. Where did the money go? Why are we spending our tax money and bringing in illegal immigrants spending more on them than our first responders. The 911 healthcare fund provides very little- almost nothing for meaningful mental health care. Our elected officials no longer have our interests and values front of mind.

Rob, getting in your car and going there and trying, *was* remarkable that day and still is to *this* day, not least because you were a first-day 'Probie' if I heard you right? Damn it's 20 years later and you are still questioning out loud how useful you were? You may not have known 'what to do' but you were asking people who were more experienced what you could do to help, and they were assigning tasks to you. If *those* people had not been in a state of total shock too, they would have sent you back to the Firehouse, but they *were* in varied states of shock, so I assign no blame to them, or you, for the illnesses you have suffered since, only whichever politicians delayed you and your fellow first responders from getting the check-ups and treatment you have needed from day one.

Just going there that day, the other days, the days of your career, and all the time you gave fighting Congress to get them to do their job authorizing the Bill For all the others should be more than sufficient. Your personal battles because of 9/11 are astounding, scary and sad. There is so much I want to say admiring your efforts through all the physical, emotional and mental problems. Your voice for those who couldn't speak did/does make a difference. It's so apparent hearing your story God had an important reason sending that doctor to save your life as a baby. Resilience, perseverance, love, common sense, intelligence used beyond your own personal benefit and kindness I hear in your story. God hears you and loves you though his path for you has been far different than you could ever imagine.

This is not only history, it is living history. I can't believe the 20 something year old interns couldn't listen for a few minutes to something that is so devastating to other people. They are jerks for that. Just because it happened a long time ago when they were like 4 years old doesn't mean that it's not important.

My goodness, this should be top news every day, as well as top priority. I knew there were health issues as a direct result to working at Ground Zero, but I had no idea it could impact a single person in so many ways .Rob, you are absolutely a 9/11 hero. You helped the victims and their families in so many ways. Those officials declaring the atmosphere was safe is just WRONG. It is infuriating that there's been such a slow and lax government response to help these people. It's absolutely sickening and ridiculous.

I’ve listened to multiple stories of first responders on the scene, who arrived before any buildings collapsed. They tell stories of coming up on body parts on the streets. Where did these body parts come from? I’m assuming jumpers. But I’m also wondering, if found before any collapse, were some of these body parts from passengers in the planes?

My goodness, I had no idea that the US wasn't funding the healthcare of people who were in NY through the period after 9/11. I am very thankful that in my country, England, we still have the last remnants of our free National Health Service. I worry for not just my old age, but for the lives of the generations, but when a major event such as 9/11 happens that's when I'd have thought the government would step in to help its citizens.
What are these reports , following 9/11 in which it became known that there was so much toxicity in the air, and that it as known at the time? I haven't heard very much about people suffering , and to this day because of the air in NY following the attack.

The most infuriating part is federal elected officials keep their top-drawer health insurance for the rest of their lives, even if they serve only 1 term, at tax payer expense.
And yet first responders, clean up crews, residents, school children small business owners, employees struggling with illness and death have to beg.

Apparently the US govt now also has billions to send to the Ukraine but nothing for the heroic men and women who volunteered to clean up one of the most toxic places on earth. There's so much debate right now about what actually caused the towers to collapse. But the real story is how the US govt used their own best people to clean up afterwards. There needs to be a lot more talk and discussion about helping these heros.
