This song captures so well the essence of a 90's college spring break. I love it, it makes me nostalgic for something I've never experienced in my life
During April, my parents took me to see Ben Folds and a Piano at the Borgata in Atlantic city. I listened to a couple of his songs at the time, but not much. It was the fist time I saw him live. The crowd was great, and it was probably the best live performance I have ever seen. I can't wait to see him play again.
Awesome song! remember watching ben folds five live in manchester back in 1998/99 very few people in the UK had heard of them at that time and there were maybe 150 people max there, felt like a private concert!
Cranking this song a lot again lately. Used to play it when it came out. Just got dumped a month ago and last Friday my company start-up was evaluated, estimated worth $12.8 million. A very confusing time for me (lol) so you're helping me through Ben Folds Five. Cheers from New Zealand :)
The other day, this song, "Philosophy" performed by Ben Folds Five, was used in a popular variety show on television in Japan, and immediately became famous with name of "BFF's P". I love this song which attracts people of different countries and generations.
Gotta love the part around 3:58 when Ben plays some of "Rhapsody In Blue". That part always makes me want him to complete that phrase, so I end up listening to "Rhapsody" immediately after. Rhapsody In Blue: ruclips.net/video/4jVh5cZ_ZvM/видео.html Philosophy (Official): ruclips.net/video/e4qpTKiRewI/видео.html (I prefer the official version, but I appreciate that copies like this are around for posting comments. I'm not sure why the official ones usually don't allow comments.)
Long Vacation (90s japanese drama) did feature ben folds five, although they didn't appear. I remember it was a concert scene. Well, they are big in japan in the 90s
Lots of comments about the genius music (rightly so) but the wordsmithing is pretty top-notch, too. Won't you look up at the skyline? At the mortar, block, and glass And check out the reflections in my eyes You see they always used to be there Even when this was all was grass And I sang and danced about a high-rise And you were laughing at my helmet hat Laughing at my torch Well, go ahead, you can laugh all you want I got my philosophy (it keeps my feet on the ground) And I trust it like the ground (ground) And that's why my philosophy (my phil') It keeps me walking when I'm falling down ('osophy) I see that there is evil And I know that there is good Now the in-betweens, I never understood Would you look at me? I'm crazy But I get the job done Yeah, I'm crazy but I get the job done And I say, go ahead, you can laugh all you want But I got my philosophy (it keeps my feet on the ground) And I trust it like the ground (ground) And that's why my philosophy (my phil') It keeps me walking when I'm falling down ('osophy) I pushed you 'cause I loved you guys I didn't realize You weren't having fun And I dragged you up the stairs And I told you to fly You were flapping your arms You started to cry, you were too high No, too high You may take this all for granted You take the mortar, block, and glass And you forget the speech that moved the stone But it's really not that you can't see The forest from the trees You never been out in the woods alone So you can laugh all you want to But I got my philosophy (it keeps my feet on the ground) And I love you, you're my friend (friend) But you got no philosophy (my phil') And now it's time for the song to end ('osophy)
You forget the speech and move the stone, And it's really not that you can't see The forest from the trees, You've never been out in the woods alone. Fucking brilliant.
Looked this up after hearing him on The Nerdist podcast, great interview / conversation so I had to look up the full orchestration. (love the Rhapsody in Blue quote there at the end lol)
I don't mind when people post comments on songs saying where they came from... They're enjoying the music and sharing that with the community they came from... What annoys me is all of the bitter "I'm here cause it's good music" retaliation comments. Let people enjoy their thing for God's sake, everyone heard about it from somewhere.
for a nerd an an ass-hole, this guy's genius behind the keys and ability to get a crowd going and coming back in the next town all over again are hard to match.

@ToddskiDoodle11 The first record (BFF s/t) is the most chipper/high-energy of the lot, if you ask me. It's also my favorite, for the same reason. Another classic on this record is "Best Imitation of Myself".
me and my friends used to get high and listen to ben folds five and just banter all night, we hate their music, its shit, but the nostalgia it brings back from our high times makes me enjoy it. Strange I know.
hm... it depends what the philosophy is... some people just think being crazy is their philosophy... instant gratifications, going the extreme, eating all junk food, being as fat as gravity can allow them to carry their own body, and then, self-righteous as much as they can be

you woulda loved it
Saw Ben Folds in 04, still the best concert I've ever been to.
very jealous of you sire
"I pushed you 'cause I loved you guys, and I didn't realize you weren't having fun"
This makes the song for me.
really really love that line too
Ben Folds proved that all of those childhood piano lessons that kids hate can be applied to a rock band.
Actually he didn’t really take lessons. He learned Billy Joel and Elton John by ear cause he was bored as a kid.

I'm singing this song in church this sunday :) Gotta love Unitarian Universalists!
You know, when I look at the comments of a Ben Folds song, I honestly don't expect to see a bunch of Japanese.
I like it.

Well said!
GENIUS! BEST SONG
26年前に買った(1995)アルバムの中で自分的に第1位。でその中での1番の曲。ポップさと哀愁が漂っている。
Philosophy aired in Japan!? I love Japans music, and for America Ben Folds was like the only exception. Japan really has great taste in music!
Absolutely love the piano in the song, oh and Ben Folds too of course :)
i love how he randomly puts "Rhapsody in Blue" into the solo. anyone else catch that?
Hell yeah
