When I left Vancouver 15 years ago, it was dying then. There’s only so many times you can see heroin users shooting up on the bus, mentally ill people urinating and defecating into drains and being scared to accidentally leave so much as a dime on your car seat. It’s frustrating bcs I’d very much like to return to BC, and Vancouver is where all the jobs in games, tech and higher education are…but then, so is the heroin and related crime. I was single then, and can’t imagine raising kids there now. It’s really very sad.

Yes, it is very sad. Young people have to move away from here to live in other cities. If we follow the pattern of other west coast cities in the U.S., the situation will get worse. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Wishing you all the best.

Had a store in 90s down there and it was barely safe but now hundreds of well off social workers have convinced living this way is ok. There needs to be more 1-1 24/7 rehab and pay those workers very well for 15 day contracts or something in provided room or housing.

My friend, a lawyer, just migrated to Vancouver from the Philippines. She joined her husband and daughter who moved earlier this year. Her husband is on a study visa. She, as his dependent can work there while their daughter studies high school. They're already wealthy in the Philippines. She worked as a corporate lawyer here while her husband is/was in the tech business. Canada is a different ballpark but I feel they'll continue to be wealthy there. Meanwhile, I'm stuck here. I wonder though despite it being a super modern and wealthy country why Canada still has its share of homeless population.

Just went to Vancouver, it seems as if they all spend money on drugs, I see half of the homeless people knocked out literally mid-day, I saw somebody trying to interview them but none of the homeless people that were knocked out woke up, a guy who I talked to got groceries from a street full of homeless people, apparently a guy started chasing him with a hatchet, before that he got spat on aswell, I was eating at an A & W and I had to take a poo, but there was a guy living in the stall, backpack, pillow, everything, it’s truly disgusting how many homeless people there is, Vancouver really has to sort it out, but if Vancouver DOES sort it out, more homeless people will save up for transportation to Vancouver, continuing the process over and over and over again, making it an infinite loophole, all Vancouver would be is a homeless shelter

She was recently attacked for filming, had her purse, phone and jewelry stolen. They threw the puppy stroller she uses to walk her dog into the street in oncoming traffic. They beat her up. Thank God she had pepper spray, it was two men and a woman who attacked her. Everyday she also faces insults and threats from the people. They block the entrance to the senior housing building she lives, they do and sell drugs and have drug parties in their tents and sell stolen items in front of her building. This is a 'west coast' thing, Seattle, Portland, San Fran, San Diego and L.A. all have the same challenges. If you do some research you'll find that less that 50% of these souls are from BC. The majority are from across Canada who were lured by warmer weather and easy access to welfare. Other provinces have been 'caught' coercing their street people to move to BC, Alberta and Sask. are major culprits. This is a national problem, Vancouver is unfortunately the end of the sewer pipe. In 2022 the Canadian federal fiscal budget shows that 7.6 BILLION dollars was given in foreign aid !? WTF. Pakistan , a haven for Muslim radicals AND a country proven to have training bases for terrorists was given 58 MILLION dollars...and this to a country that has a nuclear bomb and was Bin Laden's hiding place. The Pakistan Gov't KNEW he was there.... and we give them money ? Before Trudeau goes skipping around the globe handing out our money, lets take care of our own backyard first. Lets take care of these people and our Veterans, we just need a provincial and federal gov't who has the vision and balls to do it...

The Seattle Chinatown International District (CID) dodged a close one.
The County was going to expand a Covid 19 Salvation Army homeless shelter to 5 acres of land, where it would have @ 400 beds, 50 Tiny Homes and 50 RV parking spots. This facility would also be the City's Drunk Tank and have a 24/7 Mental Health Clinic.
This Mega Shelter is located 1-1/2 block South of the CID and the County never talked to the neighborhood about it's plans - Winter 2022 was it's implementation date.
The nearby Seattle Little Saigon neighborhood businesses were destroyed by a 75 bed Shelter (DESC Navigation Center) that attracted lots of Crime and Drug Addicts. Crazy in Seattle, you have to steal more than $950 so it's a felony. Anything under, it's a Misdemeanor and the Police don't come since they got Defunded and are understaffed. Drug use is like Vancouver, so you see people using business doorways all the time, scaring away customers.
Thankfully the CID started rallies and the Elderly old ladies living there showed up to the Protests with signs and chants, they embarrassed the County and it got cancelled.
Lookup "Seattle Chinatown Objects to Shelter", you'll see some Seattle Times articles. RUclips channel "Chino Y Chicano" episode 70 (it got cancelled) 67 (CID history) 62 (Journalist Jonathan Choe about Seattle's Homeless) and 60 (Transit Station in CID - 10 years of construction). Jonathan Choe is a Senior Fellows (Writer) for the Discovery Institute. Look them up and His reporting and articles brought a lot attention to this Shelter.

Just as an aside, I didn't recognize Enrique Cerna. I use to see him because I use to watch Seattle news and programming.
It's hard to imagine Seattle's situation is so bad a 5 acre shelter was considered. I haven't been to Seattle in over 12 years.
I think East Hastings has affected Chinatown but it hasn't caused Chinatown to deteriorate. Although there are some homeless people hanging out in Chinatown, there are no tents, as far as I can tell in Chinatown. Partly because services, such as injection sites and support is located on East Hastings Street. Graffiti and vandalism happens in both areas. The unprovoked attacks in Chinatown are not all by homeless people.
Chinatowns throughout North America are facing similar challenges, such as gentrification, affordable housing and retaining the Chinese culture.
Great to see the senior Chinese protestors out in full force. We had the Chinese seniors out to stop a building going up at 105 Keefer Street. It was a smaller cause than yours in Seattle, but we were happy to see it stopped.

The "Northwest Asian Weekly" covers the Seattle area Asian community. They have an article on the Businesses leaving the Chinatown district due to crimes caused by the homeless.
What the CID feared about the Mega Shelter was how a Shelter operates - they take people in for the night, feed them breakfast, then ask them to leave. Also it will be the City's Sobering Center and 24/7 Mental Health Clinic for the Homeless - so it concentrates a lot of dysfunctional people in one area and it's not a jail, they can leave when they feel good enough to repeat the same cycle of despair again.
Where do they go when they leave? South to the Industrial area, East to I-5 and a hill, West to the Stadiums or 1 block North to Chinatown where there's Parks, Businesses, Restaurants and Transit stations to Shoplift from, Customers to beg from, Vacant lots to buy drugs from and a City Park to sleep and do their drugs, litter needles and use the area as a bathroom.
It would make the CID so scary and undesirable to visit, that Businesses would leave and the land is now available for the City's developer friends - it is government approved Block Busting a neighborhood for it's valuable property.
Sad that a City that Prides Itself for it's "Wokeness", Equity and Inclusion could care less about the Success of a neighborhood full of Ch*nks, J*ps and G**ks - who cause no problems to the City if left alone. Even the Police Chief thought it was a bad idea.

Mentally ill and drug addicted people are not capable of summoning the discipline required to properly maintain a home, let alone maintaining a responsible administrative life of a normal citizen.
They prefer the streets to the boring minutiae of institutional medical and psychiatric therapy combined with the rigors of daily domestic duties in the maintaining of a proper functioning dwelling.

We' re lucky to have a former president who waged a war on drugs. Now these things are now minimal in our country. The Canadian govt should look into this. We hope people there get on the way back to recovery. Watching from the Philippines.

It's actually under the city leadership where the majority of city councillors support the BC Green party. And the mayor chooses to support special interest groups in the city that advocate for the drug addicts rather than allowing the police to do their job. Mayor Kennedy Stewart first defunded the department by taking away $6M of their budget, but then they challenged him, took it to the province and the provincial NDP party ordered him to reinstate the $6M to their budget, so then since that didn't work, Kennedy started ordering the police to not engage with people in the DTES, to decrease the police presence in the Eastside, and he implemented a rule telling the police they have to tell residents to call 3-1-1 to report a crime rather than calling the police so that city hall can filter the calls and determine what police respond to. In addition, Kennedy supports drug addict advocate groups like Pivot, led by Anna Cooper who claims it's the drug addicts right to set up tents and do drug and create this hell on the sidewalks. She also claims it's illegal for the cops to do anything. Which is totally false and not sure why the police by her BS. And Kennedy also supports DULF which supplies the drug addicts with more free opioids that keep them addicted to drugs. Kennedy also supports OPS led by Sarah Blyth that has 8 buildings on Hastings where drug addicts can go and feed their addiction with all the heroin and meth and crack and fentanyl they want. They choose to enable the drug addicts and allow them to create this world of crime and violence and disgusting drug addiction instead of protecting the disadvantaged tenants in the low income buildings where the poor seniors, disabled people and working poor individuals can only afford to live. The actual disadvantaged Vancouverites are being treated like second class citizens to the drug addicts, the drug addicts are given more rights than the actual poor people. You should watch the video Vancouver is Dying on here, it offers more information about what is going on. The majority of problems are due to Mayor Kennedy. He needs to be voted out.

Their narrative doesn't play without the homeless. In addition, they know that solutions are so simple. Criminals litter the streets in the DTES. Those people won't change, even with free housing. In addition, the NDP is completely full of s**t. They are all about narratives and very little action. They waste tax money and tell tall tales.

@@Liberal_From_Prairies689 Thank you and very good sharing. I just don't understand, in order to save these people is to get them off and away from the drugs they are by any possible means. Also to offer whatever support possible to get them back on their feet. I can't see the login on how these people can be helped by keeping then on the drugs that ended up killing them.

I think the answer is simple if you want to live on the streets and not pay taxes like normal people. On drugs or not on drugs your going to have to work create a place that all those homeless people are taken to like a large farm or factory and put there asses to work making stuff or cleaning zoos or graffiti off the streets. Come with the Curfew you can't Reason with anyone on drugs or help them Unless they really really want The help so you want to live on the streets and shit and pee and do what ever now we have a place for all of you to go and pay your dues I don't feel sorry for them because there are plenty of programs out there they just choose to live like that take them all to labor farms or Industrial area for homeless and put them to work there is plenty of work to do
