  • Maritime Museum in Colombo Fort is located in Chaitya Road a little down the road from Galle Buck Lighthouse. It is on the harbour premises and operated and maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
It was originally a Dutch warehouse used to store various food stuffs and ship paraphernalia. The SLPA renovated the building and established the Maritime Museum in 2003.
Correction to the narration: At 1:45 the narration says, "During the time of the British, when old buildings were being demolished for the renovation of the port, it was saved from demolition in 1951 by the intervention ...." Actually, the year 1951 is post-independence and the narration should be corrected to read simply, "At a time when old buildings were being demolished for the renovation...."
The museum is open on every day of the week except Sunday from 9 am to 4 pm and entrance is free.
Filmed, written and edited by Leonard Jayawardena.
The narration is by an AI-generated voice provided by Microsoft Azure Services.
