Putin taxes the RICH among Coronavirus

  • After the Great Depression, the Revenue Act of 1934 raised income taxes on the wealthy, while reducing them for lower income groups. It also raised estate taxes on the wealthy and closed corporate tax loopholes. The Revenue Act, also called the “Wealth Tax Act,” eventually raised taxes to 75 percent on incomes over $500,000. Can Russia avoid a recession by targetting the many millions of dollars currently being transported tax free into offshore accounts?

We went into total lock down here in NZ a few days ago. 4 weeks. Government is paying a wage subsidy, because most companies have to close except supermarkets and medical centers etc. They have to keep their workers hired and pay them if they take the subsidy. Most companies are taking it. Everybody else has to apply for benefits that are fast tracked and increased. Families with mortgages get a six month repayment holiday if they have lost their income.
Somehow I think this is going to take longer than four weeks. I would not be surprised to see rationing in some countries. NZ and Russia both produce most of their own food, so may just have a few shortages, but other countries like the UK who import most of theirs may face more severe shortages like in WWII.
Here having everybody staying home in quarantine is cutely called 'staying in our bubbles' on TV news and official info etc. Typical NZ.
I had three assessments for Covid-19 from doctors on the phone. The first two they thought I had it and were arranging testing, but then they changed their minds. I was in strict self isolation for five days. It was weird. My fever is mostly gone now, so hopefully they are right that I do not have it. Mostly worried about our elderly mother. Nobody can go visit her. We just talk on the phone. All the best folks.
Covid-19: Yet another example proving capitalism is not fit for purpose. Can have some of it (like Lenin's NEP), but not everything should revolve around the markets etc. They are too fickle and unreliable etc. It jacks prices for things in high demand, e.g., masks now. When markets tank, they cause so much harm. We have to do better.

Inessa, that wasn't after the Depression, that was right in the middle of it. The US didn't recover from the Depression until after WW2, when Congress refused to reenact Roosevelt's policies in the Truman administration. There was a more severe crash in 1920 which no one remembers because Harding only cut spending, because revenue fell, and the US recovered within a year. Hoover and Roosevelt intervened, Roosevelt greatly expanding Hoover's existing policies, and succeeded in prolonging a correction into a depression. Rothbard's 'History of the Great Depression' may be the best source, but 'The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History' by Woods is an easier read. Roosevelt got many of his economic ideas from Italian fascism, giving his Cabinet a book by the Fascist theoretician Gentile, which should make him popular with the communist apologizers who follow you.(not) All of which may have nothing to do with Putin preventing oligarchs from hiding income overseas, but for Russia's sake, I hope no one sees Roosevelt as a model to follow. People were hungry, and his administration destroyed food to bring farm prices up, just one of the examples of government insanity.

The currency games are uneatable Inessa.
What matters is: Can you keep production going? And with that i dont mean luxury cars.
As i see it, with a global recession that is threatening us, capitalism failed once again. Ofc the purists are now going to say the capitalism we had/have, is not real capitalism, but these always divert from the topic whenever one brings up that in a capitalistic system that has no free nature reserves, possesions always flow from the bottom to the top. It is inherently faulty, just as communism is for another reason.
Different countries will do different things, but i see no other option. if we want to limit death and destruction, to temporarily (!) have state controlled operation.
No, that is not communism. Communism is totalitarian. I am merely speaking of freezing the capitalistic ecomomy and temporarily switch to a state lead economy.
I dont think we have another choice. A capitalistic 'free' crash will lead to extreme poverty in many countries and starvation. That is not good for anyone.
