THIS movie is amazin. I too have watched what mental illness can do to a family. It is something you never get over. I often think of my cousin who suffered from mental illness and took her own life. I can still hear our last phone conversation. I choose to remember her beautiful smile and her contagious laughter on her good days. Until we meet again.
I worked in a group home for develpopmentaly disabed and the mentally ill for 24 years.The sadness that comes with them is heartwrenching but the small times of happiness for them is over the top.
This is an exceptional movie in all ways and exposes small town life in this state. Such a beautiful state, but so many secrets, a beautiful life but the worst of lives at the same time. It is typical of small towns here. They all have their secrets and the people deep down are as miserable as the sins they hide, it's generational. after watching this, I honestly font know why I stay, except for the land. I knew the ending before I saw it. It's called Missouri justice! You see what goes on but are expected to say nothing. It is a sad way to live.
The woman had a brain injury from being hit by a truck. I guess it caused severe mental illness. Most mentally ill people are perfectly safe except for the severe cases.
I guess back in those days they didn't have a place for the brain injured like they do now and have had for many years now. So they stuck them in a mental institution which actually made them worse as depicted in this movie.
St Joseph, MO has a Psychiatric Museum. It is mind boggling what went on there, the treatment, equipment, sane with the insane, etc.I would say it has only been since practically the 80s that we have really addressed mental illness.
I really don't get this movie , Grace went to live with Landy and his kids she ends up in a nut house for some reason , Landy gets her out some years later and the other kids stayed little , I've rewound this a few times trying to make some sense of this , what the hell , did I miss something
She was hit by a car and seriously injured while crossing the road to pick flowers. While her physical injuries healed, she was left brain-damaged and unable to function normally. After spending years in an asylum her brother petitioned for her release and took Grace home to live with his family.

The acting in this, particularly by the children is exceptional.

What a sad movie. But it just goes to show that love cannot fix mentally ill people and sometimes you can't bring them into your family home.
