Cam, you just be you. I don't think anyone will see this as boasting or anything similar. You are a sincire guy, and every video you put out there shows that honesty. As you said: the results are what they are. You very well portray the daily struggle every (semi-)pro athlete has to endure to make it to the top, put down a great result each time and that even the ones that don't make it to the absolute top have to work extremely hard to overcome obstacles. A true sportsman, just showing what he loves to do, with all the pains, insecurities, highs and lows that come with it.

Cam, I appreciate the honesty of your videos. I don’t think you come over in anyway boastful. Don’t change your approach. Heat is sapping and it’s your winter - don’t be so hard on yourself. You are in an encouragement to those of us that are the majority of rowers who experience highs and lows in exactly your way.

First - major congratulations on the success in the 2x, 4x and 8+ getting on the podium with some hardware rewards and pass on our best to Big Dog Jacko for winning in the 1x (I suspect some form of gate sabotage from his in-laws 🤣).
As for your honesty, well, that’s the reason why I only follow your channel for the genuine ups and downs of rowing. Any sport at an elite level is something us average Joes could only grasp the basics of what you go through but as rower I know what it takes to have a chance at club level plus racing a single - that’s a whole mindset you could never understand unless you have tried it at any level.
So again - brilliant results in trying heat and let’s not forget, humidity - looking forward to witnessing your next challenges 😎

Coming from a Scotish winter to an Australian summer you will not cope with the heat anything like a local will after only a couple of weeks. If you feel like you've run out of steam this could be a big factor.

I love your humility and honesty Cam. Definitely don’t come across as look at how awesome am I or any rubbish like that. Just great to see a great bloke have a genuine crack, searching for his best and sharing the ups and downs of elite sport.
I wouldn’t discount the heat. Your pastey Northern skin repels the heat like a sausage in a frying pan whereas us Aussies soak it up like solar panels - especially Queenslanders! You’ve been smashing it in very hot conditions off the back of a long haul flight. Acclimatising takes weeks and you’ve jumped in and got on with it with big sessions throughout. I wouldn’t be surprised if the energy systems are still in WTF land!
Enjoy the rest of your trip and safe travels! Get down to Melbourne if you can!

Hey Cam, I'm really new to rowing, and I love watching your vlogs because you inspire me and because you make rowing (and erging) look fun and challenging. We all get knocked back in things we do in our lives, just when you think you got the hang of it or you got this nailed something comes along and holds you back or stops you going where you wanted to go, but other times things surprise you and you get where you want to be. You did so well in the team events and you seem to give off great energy towards your teams mates and that awesome to have that energy. Not many people have the guts or balls to wear their heart of their sleeve. Thanks you being you and sharing what you do.

I try to put it out of my head, but it’s not always easy. Knowing that I’m not alone helps. Thank you for this video. Whilst you didn’t win today, you won in other ways by being thoughtful, humble and reflective about it.

You're not misrepresenting yourself. We all can see where it is you are and where you want to get. It's amazing to be training and competing at the level you are. However making that next step up is difficult (but not impossible). Keep it going we are supporting you all the way. Also you walked into a buzzsaw training against Jackson - that guy's a beast. He's going all the way!

  • @bengray3950

Correct me if I am wrong, but it would seem to me that you're used to racing in relatively cold temperatures. If that is the case, you will have a higher proportion of brown fat that is raising your body temperature. Naturally, if you're overheating, it becomes harder to exert yourself as energy expended further heats your body. These guys are all acclimatised to the Aussie heat and you can only compare your performance if you race in the same environment in which you train in my opinion. I think big dog Jacko is on the money, and you had excellent sportsmanship. You showed everything in an open and authentic way and I am sure everyone appreciates that. Thanks for the episode.

I can't say I understood what you were saying in the middle there. But what I do know is that everyone has experienced the disappointment of a race not going how they wanted it to or even a week or month of training not going how they want it to. I'm no expert on the subject but from what I've heard it can take 2 - 4 weeks to get 'acclimated' to the heat when you go to a much hotter area so its probably possible you are still not in full form there. Keep doing what you're doing man, the videos are great and I wish you the best in the trials journey.

I use the ERG for training and that's it - i know nothing about rowing. It occurs to me looking at the times you can pull in 2k and 5k ERG that fitness isn't the issue - maybe technique putting the power down? Plus those fellas (or most of them i suspect) live in Australia so they are perfectly acclimatised to the heat - not the same as visiting and then racing hard.

Some perspective from a 67 year old lifetime athlete. In sport you are ulitmately competing against yourself and your own expectations. You didn't lose in the single, you did not meet your expectations. That's worse than losing to others because you feel you let yourself down. Did you exceed your expectations in the quad and eight? Focus on that.

You’re super tall and I’m telling you, drop the hands more on the recovery, your blades won’t scrape the water on the recovery up and you’ll catch more water.
It’s creating drag on the recovery with the blades hitting the water and then when you square up by the time you drop in the catch, it’s missing 10% of the full stroke.
Watch videos of Rob Waddell, and how he manages the blades on the recovery.

Mate cut yourself some slack, you can’t come from an English winter to a Queensland summer and expect to perform, it takes years to adjust to that heat. I understand it’s your reality but honestly unless you’ve been in that heat it’s hard to explain.
