  • The social media giant Meta says it will end access to news on its social media sites for all Canadians in response to Bill C-18, the Online News Act. Rachel Curran, head of public policy at Meta Canada says 'the way the bill is drafted does not allow for negotiations outside the framework of the legislation.'

CBC has also never ran a deliberate disinformation campaign regarding election results on behalf of a politician. Fox has. Fox is the propaganda arm of the Republican Party (as was demonstrated during the Dominion lawsuit's discovery phase), whereas CBC maintains editorial independence through Canada's Broadcasting Act and oversight of an independent ombudsman.
      "No government has involvement or influence on the journalism of CBC News and Radio-Canada Info, our French-language service. CBC's editorial independence is enshrined in Canada's Broadcasting Act, and also its publicly available journalistic standards and practices (JSP), to which the news divisions are held accountable by independent ombudsmen."
      Do you have any reputable sources indicating that CBC is deliberately dishonest or acting behalf of a political party? I've heard Peter Mansbridge explain the editorial independence, so it'd also be great if you could provide me with a decent reason not to trust him on that matter.

    Hmm a musician plays in a venue. The musician gets a cut; the venue gets a cut. Simple. Therefore, anyone who posts, likes, or even comments provides value so much so that Facebook demands ownership of our posts , pics, etc. Like the musician we enhance the success of a venue/platform like Facebook and should get a cut. Now before you argue that we post voluntarily, the fact is we the people” own the airwaves not corporations. So in this case the government is representing us. FYI there are platforms that pay those who post, like or comment on the blockchain.

      Canada passed C-18 to force companies like Meta and Google to pay the Canadian news networks to display their articles. Google and Meta just said they aren't paying anything.
      Before this law, Google and Meta gave Canadian news agencies a free platform to blow up their articles' viewership = $$ for the canadian news company.

    Well, I do understand they should pay for posting of news. However, it is their right to decide to not allow those posts on their system. I don't like it, I like sharing news and so on Facebook. However, it's a free service and they own the systems, they should be allowed to decide that they don't want to pay for this and will remove the content. Again, I don't like it but it is their property.

      No, you confuse that, it’s when others share their content. The very way facebook makes its revenue. The simple and reasonable demand is that news agencies get an appropriate portion of that as a basic requirement. It’s not like Facebook even pays a reasonable level of taxes here. Guess it is time we very strictly enforce our tax laws and remove every possible loophole.

    • @the_ikiru
      @the_ikiru Год назад

      @@TheTechnoPilot paying for "links" is a ridiculous concept and we should not accept that as a free society.
      When a user shares a link to a news article to Facebook, their friends see it and some of them click on it. The news agency website receives the traffic and can display ads to it. Some newspapers charge to read articles (Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, New York Times). These companies need to find a way to make money from their website without leeching off of other successful companies for some type of ransom.

(If the app gets banned, they die.)I also read that employees are paid in stock. That has got to benefit their market value, without any real market value or growth.
