- In this week's macro photography tutorial, I show how I take macro photos of amazing water droplet splashes at home using the Miops Splash trigger. I discuss the setup I use, from the settings on the app, my lighting, my camera settings and my technique for triggering the camera to get some great-looking splash shots.
I'm really pleased with many of these images and it really showed me how much better my shots can be when I use the Miops trigger, rather than doing it the manual way I did last time. If you're interested in this kind of photography then the trigger really is a must buy.

Nice video. The height of drop and the depth of your dish really do affect the type and size of the 'mushrooms'. I often use a longer dish to catch the reflection too. I've also found that tapping the table to introduce ripples into the dish before dropping has quite an effect on the types of collisions.
I have found that you will get even more consistent results if you have a more stable mount for the valve. Any slight vibration will move the valve off centre and thus you'll get shots like the first one you shot on the video. On some setups, the vibration can be caused by the action of the valve itself.
My experiences with the MIOPS setup have been similar to yours. It doesn't seem to work properly. Fortunately, that particular kit belonged to friends. I bought a Pluto Trigger, which is basically the same sort of setup, and which seems to work far more reliably. The gear just doesn't look as nice. However, there are many videos where people get great results with MIOPS triggers, so it may be quality control issues causing this.
You'll also get rather different results from a lower height, and also if you thicken the water slightly. To thicken I use agar gum which you can find in a good supermarket bakery section. There are many videos on just this subject.

OK, Now I have something to do on a rainy day. It would be interesting to try different colored gels to the background lighting and the side lighting for some interesting color combinations. Thanks for the inspiration.

As always an interesting video, I have tried droplet clicks with my diy setup and got some interesting results. Not a splash of course but drops and ripples..
Nice! Could you try a drop of scotch in the splash trigger?
Goods doesn’t always flash when close to camera. This can be fixed by turning on close mode. Hold down test button when turning on trigger. I had to do this for my focus stacking when flash didn’t always fire. Check the manual. Once done you will always get a flash when using the cable connected to the camera.

I commend you for your skill and patience and encourage you to continue on this path. I would like to ask you, if you have time, to make a diagram of the layout of the instrumentation, perhaps accompanied by the regulation of the falling times of the drops in relation to the height of fall from the Miops Splash. Just to have a first reference to get started in this type of photography.

Andrew, did you use the miops to trigger camera whilst using live view, could explain failed triggers, try using the camera with mirror lockup in viewfinder mode, bit of experiment needed with settings on the app will be needed appthough, also try reducing the height between valve and water surface, say about 15 inches, the closer the two are the higher the rate of collisions.
At first I thought that this video was going to be a bit long for my taste given its subject. However, it quickly gained my attention in view of your setup which would be similar to the one I would use for this kind of photography. A comfy chair and a drink would certainly add to the atmosphere. 😊 One thing I do not quite get is why you did not shot tethered having the splash unit trigger the camera. Did you not do this on purpose or was it not possible technically? Thank you and keep the interesting stuff coming 😊

Thank you for the inspiration. You didn’t use the trigger cable to the camera. I was considering this kit, but in my mind also controlling taking the shot automatically with a specific delay should in theory make for better success rate and be repeatable. Trying to trigger the camera manually seems a bit difficult. Could it be more reliable to let the unit fire the flash instead of the camera ( having the camera shutter open, in a dark environment) ?
Very interesting. But is all the hard work worth it business wise when AI is capable of doing it? What do you think the future of this kind of photography looks like?

with AI you don't even need a camera - its more about the image being something YOU actually did and created and are proud of. I would never in a month of Sundays create an AI image and hang it on my wall regardless of how it looked.
Andrew - I am contemplating getting the MIOPS but they seem to offer various kits - can you confirm if the two cables (MIOPS to flash and MIOPS to camera) are both required? Bit confused. Also the Splash kit holder I assume doesn't come with a stand?
will a fill light of a different color make a difference?
