Echo Dot Gen 3 - Mic Disable Circuit Reverse Engineering

  • How does the microphone disable circuit on the Echo Dot work? This video aims to look into more detail of that, along with if it's possible for malicious code on the main MPU to turn it back on. Check out colinoflynn.com... for the resulting schematic.
Another in the "unedited rambling" series, so this one is long for minimal pay-off! But gives some idea to how the R.E. process works.
End Result - lots of real hardware here stopping an easy attack. One last thing to check is if the main MPU can cycle the power, as on power-on the microphone does come up "live".

Would be good to have a video on how to permanently disable the mic by default. Removing the 4 mics for example, or creating a short or something which guarantees the can not work, whilst allowing the use of the dot as a smart speaker.

Thanks for this work. This gave me a great insight into reverse engineering. Great respect.
But in this case I think, SoulR3ap3r has reasonable doubts:

    My fear:
what was shown here is only the way that the microphones can be switched on and off with the button. I don't see it as proven that parallel to the switch, there is not a second hidden software solution somewhere. On the software side, it is very easy to suppress or manipulate the light signals.
A rascal who thinks evil of it.
    My suggestion:
create a monitoring circuit: connect all 4 microphone voltage supplies to an external FlipFlop catch circuit (4 channell and adjust voltages). Works for example with an Andurino.
Let the Echo Dot - as long as you can do without the microphones - run in mute mode. If, contrary to expectations, one of the microphones receives a supply voltage when the microphone is switched off, you have proof that Amazon can switch the microphones on via software.

Do I need a special sized soldering iron to release these microphones? I only have a regular soldering iron I use for stained glass work. I am afraid of frying everything else. Advice? Excellent video, thanks for doing it!!! Just need to know how to kill the mics.

Hey professor, late on this buttt @electronupdate is a fellow Canuck who's done a similar (though, sadly, very rushed/rapid) rev eng. If you're not aware of his channel its top notch. His short analysis is somewhat cursory (AFAIK he didn't do in depth analysis re: re-enabling aforementioned feature) but still fun.
Your work (and Karsten and Goodfet and the severely underrated @joesmith-je3tq them folk[basically anyone who, upon deciding to go down a rabbit hole, decides they will go deep, deep down generally put out A+ content]) is super great!!! Big fan, huge fan. #1 fan. ahaha keep rockin. -andrew

Is it possible to place a 1/8” TRS in place of one of the microphones to be used as a connector for an external mic? We use these in an A/V system, but have to strap a headphone over the top and do some heavy eq to get it to kinda work. With an input Jack, we would have much better control over the signal going in.
