I’ve been watching square dancing here on RUclips for about an hour, and this is the best video I’ve seen so far! I used to be a square dancer years ago and I miss it a lot!
Me too. I used to square dance 40 years ago and these bring back a lot of memories. I wish my ex-wife had kept at it. Maybe we wouldn't have gotten divorced. :)
So do I. I danced for many years here in Western Canada and also down in the USA. I've never had so much fun and met so many super great people. Who knows Lisa, perhaps we even danced in the same square at some time? If we have, I want to apologize for stepping on your toes. :) LOL
Look at some of the other videos on RUclips of square dancers in the United States. They dress this way, too. It's not how they "think country people dress." It's how square dancers dress.
I can remember back in the 80s them wearing outfits like this for square dancing but it was better dancing than this and the music definitely wasn't pop.
They probably thought that it would be fun for most of the kids. I've always been skeptical about square dancing myself despite the fact that I pretty much love any type of dance. However it doesn't look as silly as I thought it would and the music is actually decent.
Hi. The Rockin' Family is a Country Line Dance club of 3 years old, and also a Square Dance club for 2 years only. It is situated in Nice, in the South of France.
I wish I had been wise enough in Jr. High to have not pretended to hate square dancing just because everybody else hated it or pretended to hate it. It was so much fun and I'd have enjoyed it much more if I had just not cared if I'd been seen truly enjoying it. It takes a rare person to be wise enough at that age though to be true to themselves. I'm in my late twenties and god dammit, I'm going to talk my boyfriend into going square dancing with me!
i truly hated it because it was part of a christmas dance in sweden every highschool student had to do, it was mandatory if you didnt participate you got an F in gym and it was nearly impossible to get in to college. yes it sounds ridiculous but its true, you couldnt fail it if either so the only way to get an F in dancing was to not participate by faking an ilness or just skip. i think now they got rid of it because of the escalating imigration, if you werent a christian you didnt have to do it either so it was really unfair and most imigrants faked being muslims just to skip it, in hindsight i should have done the same because sweden has freedom of religion to. this christmas dance they did was horrible, everyone hated it while those who was either of another religion or just had so many Fs their future was ruined anyway laughed at us poor kids who had to suffer through it, an yes even the popular kids had to suffer through it because the stakes where to high. but as i said this was 10 years ago, i think they removed it
No, I pretty much hated it. And the teachers who got off on embarrassing kids in humiliating situations, who should have understood the emotional fragility of this age.
I loved it, it's a little different from the Brazilian version though, like the steps are dictated at the time the dancers are performing, in the Brazilian version the dancers memorize the steps to be performed. Very beautiful!
I was happy I didn’t have to be with a boy when I did this in sixth grade. Edit: Square dancing is pretty fun, but I don’t want to do it again this year. Edit #2: I’m unhappy that we have an even number of boys and girls in my PE class this year.
Try the square dance conventions and Friendship Dances where there is usually a stall. Go to the main square dance websites and look for events in your area or ask Callerlab for details of your nearest club.
Most schools don't teach square dancing very well at all. If your teacher isn't a qualified caller or doesn't teach the Callerlab syllabus, demand better!
They perform the moves neatly. Most is Basic and a bit Mainstream. I have been dancing for years myself. I dance the Plus moves There are too few clubs in the Netherlands. You always have to travel a lot to participate.
I always thought it was fun I love(all)dance(and)It(Helps If One(HAS)-(Or)If You Have(RYTHYM)!!!-AND HaveCORDINATION!!! Unfortunately Not Everyone Does!
Can you list the callers that we are hearing? I hear some familiar voices but can't place the names. In order if you can. Is the Rockin' Family a square dance club? What city are the located in? Contact info?

I could be wrong, but I think it is Jerry Jestin. A recorded version of him.
Haha I never did this.. maybe that is why I was such a loner and never had a crush thru kinder to 12 grade.. I mean I had one in high school but I didn’t had the guts to talk to that stupid guy.. haha This dance helps you break the ice.. ;-)
The language is part of the basic definition of Modern Western Square Dance. The calls and directions are always in English. The patter (filler words) can be in any language, but the dance directions are always English. Some of the call names are actually foreign words, but since the call name never changes, that is okay :)
Good point. I do some old Playford squares, including Hunsdon House, believed to date from 1580, which includes the world's first Grand Square. The history explains some of the terms, which are either French (for example, dos a dos) or a direct translation of the French, e.g. grand chain, ladies' chain. It's a shame that the tradition of the quadrille and the cotillion have largely been lost in France so the connection has been broken. If you're interested in doing some Playford dances in England, I can recommend Morley College Folk Dance Club in London. HF Holidays also offer Playford dancing events. I went to one in Malhamdale in November, for example.
In Western square dancing you dance with each person of the opposite sex in the set, not with one person throughout. If your teacher doesn't know this, demand someone who knows the Callerlab syllabus and will teach you to Mainstream level, otherwise it's a waste of time.
I always thought it was fun I love(all)dance(and)It(Helps If One(HAS)-(Or)If You Have(RYTHYM)!!!-AND HaveCORDINATION!!! Unfortunately Not Everyone Does!

So.... they're french people dressed like they think country people dress.... listening to Ricky Martin
Jon Roe doesn’t make the video any less ridiculous.

I dont understand. Why are they not pulling each others beards and sashaying out the door and into glade?
The girls look very pretty, and what big hair they have!
I just love the ladies' outfits -- wonder where I could get a similar blouse and skirt?

Yes, I love their outfits...
Kathe Jones lol
Eeeww. I recall ripping up petticoats and skirts by the age of 3. My parents took the hint and let me dress like a human.

I was afraid the calling would be in French. My brain would have imploded for sure.

I was almost made to do this in year 5, I got out of it by spitting on my hands lol
Western square dancing in France ?
It's a natural. Modern Western Square Dance (the style demonstrated here) is a direct descendant of French ballroom square dance (Quadrille)
Good point. I do some old Playford squares, including Hunsdon House, believed to date from 1580, which includes the world's first Grand Square. The history explains some of the terms, which are either French (for example, dos a dos) or a direct translation of the French, e.g. grand chain, ladies' chain.
