The key issue with these battles is always that the formations do not take advantage of the terrain and to deploy along the ridgeline, rather than in a rectangle. It's a bit frustrating to see how certain parts of the battlefield are predictably overrun simply because the ranged units cannot get their weapons on target. Also a orderly retreat would be a nice tactic once the bodies start piling up disrupting line of fire.
You can alter the size and shape of the squad's box. At 7:35 you can see the battle map. I think "space" indicates the gap between the units and the "rank shape" determines the size of the rectangle the squad is in. Could be wrong about that though.
hey with cleopatra's new projectile have you considered giving a lower damage version of it, with a pumped up firerate to a german soldier? give hans his flammenwerfer.
The rl Sherman had either a .50 cal MG or a pair of .30 cal. You can simulate this by having a shotgun trooper for each tank, to clean up the solo attackers. The game's Sherman is more like a panzerjager (tank hunter), so can get overrun by hordes.
1000 Sherman's vs a 1 million wave of each of the main unit types from weakest to strongest. (Persian, Zombie, Footman, Archers, Egyptian Warrior, Egyptian Spearman, Romans, Spartans, Red Coats, American Shotgunners, American Assault, Germans) 100 vs 12000000, bet your PC can't handle it even on potato :( (or even skip the army units at the end)
The Sherman’s on guard mode probably gave them more of a disadvantage because they needed to stay together and compact to make it harder for the zombies to get to them.
Indeed, and defense is ALWAYS better for these types of shooting units. Those that (allegedly) said that attack mode or guard mode give more chances to win are nuts, I can't even comprehend how they can say that.
@@xenotypos When it comes to range units, the key is: Can they shoot down their enemies fast enough in order to prevent themselves from being surrounded. Unfortunately, most of the time, the answer is ‘No’.
Hearing you talk about being born in 98 brought back memories, I was born in 98. Remember my 1st flip phone didn't work cause of the bad signal. Whenever it did have a signal it was only one bar. Good times 😄
The thing is that the Shermans are not depicted realistically, because they only use their main cannons. The Sherman, I believe also has a machine gun on it's main hull. The M4A3 Sherman also had one that could be manned on the top of the turret. If they had modeled the machine gun fire this would be a lot easier.
By the way, Daley, when you are 'in between' Gen Y and Gen Z, you're called a Xennial. It's a micro-generation-small 'generations' for people who feel like they are in zero or two generations.
If you placed both armies in the same numbers, but instead of wide ranks, they were in narrow columns (essentially just turn the armies 90 degrees), that would force them to concentrate on a narrow area. The tanks would be more effective that way.
@@multipotentialite666 All it would have to be is the usual rectangular formation turned 90 degrees. I've seen him rotate them before to form other shapes.
Split the tanks into 2 groups. place them so that the make an upside down V (but with a very broad sumit). where they come together they should "cross" a little, like an X crossed. This will cause the enemy to aim mainly for the front/center of the tanks and not so much for the left and right ends of the tank line. This also makes those on the ends able to target the closer zombies. Using this line, a group of 384 WW2 guys defeated 35000 zombies. I believe it would work equally well with a tank force.
You know what, mentioning the Attack Mode is a good point. What if the challenge was "Can we defeat a marauding horde of tanks?" You could have patches of mixed units, also on Attack Mode, surrounding the tanks, but far enough away that the tanks would HAVE to spread out in order to engage
200,000 knights, with 5,000 Spartan's and 45,000 archers defending a castle against 1,000,000 Roman and 1,000,000 Persian soldiers, that would definitely be interesting
Infantry protects tanks and tanks protect the infantry. You have to have both for proper tactics. Plus the Sherman's main weapon is a coaxial machine gun with several other auxiliary machine guns not the cannon. The game should give them both.
You could modify some of the Shermans so that they have something like a co-axial machine gun instead of the cannon. Just give them a high fire-rate, low damage and possibly up their accuracy. Intersperse them amongst the regular Shermans so they can handle the close-in zombies more efficiently. The new unit editor is great. Not they really needed it... it's nice to know that if a zombie outbreak occurs, we only need to tool up the old WW2 production lines and we got it handled.
cant see a zombie kill a sherman tank, like is the zombie trying to claw its way thru the armor? is it a sherman "Fury" in the game with the machine guns blazing on the zombies?
An idea for a future battle that would be interesting - The terrain is flat, with a trench then a hill. An officer is on the summit of the hill, tanks are located on the side of the hill, flamethrowers are located at the base of the hill, outside the trench. An overwhelming horde of zombies are located on the plain. The zombies need to cross the trench, break through the flamethrowers, pierce the tanks and kill the officer on the summit of the hill to win. Initial terrain is unfavorable to zombies, once on the hill the ranged units lose the advantage.
having watched a few of your videos with units on guard mode such as the castle defence one, i think when guard mode is on they wont actually advance until the enemy actually makes contact with your line since they started to move only after the zombies made it to them and got that one hit on them
Maybe try the 100 tanks again but add some troops to help pick off the individuals. And curious how much of the damage to the shermans was from friendly fire once the zombies got into the ranks
I think it would be interesting if you did a bunch of slightly smaller battles testing out the effectiveness of different battle tactics, and determine what strategies work best against overwhelming amounts of enemies. I.E., different troop positions, formations, attacking vs holding vs guarding (for armies consisting of melee, ranged, or both units), using RTS to employ tactical retreats or advances, etc. It would be a video less about "1000 Spartans vs 100,000 Persians", but more about "1000 vs 100k, a Guide to Battle Strategy"
I think it would help if the makers of this sim would watch some war movies or talk to some tanker veterans or, something. Yes, it is very hard to hit one person with the main gun. Which is why they never used the main gun like a sniper rifle. They had two 30's and a .50. They also had personal crew weapons which were used if they left the tank. The driver or the bow gunner, both have nothing to do in this battle, could take out zombies who reach the take a lot more effectively with a grease gun out the hatch then the main gun can .
I wish the tanks would use their machine guns. Shermans have a coaxial machine gun next to the main gun and a ball mounted machine gun in the hull. As crazy as this is, they should be actually be even more terrifying.
Soemthing that I'm pretty sure would increase ranged unit effectiveness in battles like this, but especially with stuff like the shermans, is to put about 10% of the total unit force about half of their attack range behind the main force. This way the "missed" units would be prioritized and properly aimed at by a small supporting group, while the main unit would continue primarily maintaining a perimeter around max range.
I think you should do a series about finding lowest critical mass of different unit compositions. Like what is the fewest archers and Sherman's that combine to beat infinite zombies

I think it'd be great if UEBS II modded the game so that the tank units would and could run over soldiers as part of their attack strategy. It'd be even more real to life.
not sure if this would make too much of a difference, but i think you should have some modified shermans with their fire type set to the machine gun (i dont know if thats possible) to simulate the shermans coaxial gun
Awesome video Daley as always. What do you think of a God unit battle Royale? Have hundreds or thousands of each unit and just watching the mayhem. It could be glorious.
The Effective Formation is more like the Shermans as long Range AOE attacker, and like a line of shotgunners (on the front )to deal with the stragglers (zombies that slip trough the cracks)
It seems guard mode works in this principle: If an enemy is in range and with line of sight: Stand and Fire. If any enemy is in range but none are in line of sight: Move to get line of sight and fire. + maybe: If no enemies are in range - return to base position? Or is that incorrect?
It makes sense that missile units when in guard mode will start attacking the enemy when they see it. If their range is also their limit of sight, they won't move.
WWII tanks always had 1 to 3 machine guns 30cal and 50cal to protect from infantry.. Also can you use the tanks advantage of moving and keeping at a distance from enemy?
My rough calculations show that increasing the # of Sherman tanks by x times will increase the strength of the tank group by x^1.5 times. In this case, 100->1000 = 10 times, then10^1.5 = about 30 times.
