what makes Paul the best on Bass is that he is a supreme melody maker . he never stays on the root but paradoxically is never obtrusive . Penny Lane is the perfect example . follow the walk . then it drops out .

I've been playing guitar since 1973. About 3 months ago, I decided to take up the bass, just to shake things up a bit. McCartney had a great natural ear for harmony, little changes in the vocals and the phasing and he finds a bass note to suit it. I am still discovering little touches of excellence in his playing that I couldn't even hear when I first started off. My ears were not fully developed for the bass register then and I had to work at it before I could compose a good bass part.

I believe this single is where the Beatles became great when before they were just really good, but might have started to fall off in popularity as other groups were starting to emerge at their levels at the time. The Beatles lead the way, with a few groups at their level but then went further, and when others caught up they went even further. They were always ahead of the curve with few who could keep up. Mick Jagger once told PM that they would never be as good as the Beatles because the Beatles had three who could really sing well, let alone write good songs.

The amazing thing about the innovations made by Paul as a bass player was that if you isolate the bass, it was like a little melody within the actual melody, except it was a totally different melody. Melodic bass playing is essentially Paul’s brainchild. He may not be the most technical bass player but honestly, few can claim that they reinvented the use of a bass line in popular music.

Many people equate complexity or speed of playing with quality, when Paul shows that the lasting magic comes from laying down the "perfect" part for the particular song. I have heard many, many basslines from many great musicians, but I'll take a "burn that into your brain for a lifetime" melodic perfection of a Beatles' song any day over a 1/128 note excess ... those just don't have staying power, for me, anyway.

I think the bass helped give Paul his super incredible sense of time. I discovered his genius when I tackled singing and playing Blackbird. I love listening to the White album through headphones. They cut in 4-5-6 note fills with every instrument you could imagine. Paul playing a lot of them. They did a lot of overdubs. some of this magic can only be heard with head phones.

I agree with the statement made that if he had never done anything other than play bass guitar with the Beatles he would still be a legend. I think most musicians recognize his tremendous ability and creativity in playing the bass while most of the general public don't, and after all, his singing with the Beatles was more out front to everyone than his bass playing. But we get it. Having listened to all of their songs many times we hear those bass notes in every song and no two songs are alike... a fresh approach to every song. Of course, I love all of their music from beginning to end but it's some of those early songs from my early teens that still move me now like they did back then... and not alway's Paul's song either as John was on top of his game in the early days as well... songs like: I want to hold you hand; I saw her standing there, From me to you; and probably my favorite She Loves You. I suppose generally my favorite Beatles songs are around the Hard Days Night and Help era, but, I love them all.

I remember when their songs first hit the airwaves on AM radio and, the iconic first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Just recently I saw a video of that moment in history and almost 60 years later it looked exactly as I remembered it.

hahaha BROOO!! I love love LOVE how your backing track's quantizing on 'The Word' and 'Rain' respected Ringo's deliciously shaky timing!! 😆
But more importantly, AWESOME video. I thought I was alone in observing this progression in Paul's playing. I would have chosen almost every single song you chose to illustrate your point. When I started being obsessed with The Beatles at age 12-13, it was because of phrases like those in 'Rain' (with riffs like 4-5-♭7-5-4-♭3-1 on 32th notes) that I started paying attention to the bass mostly. My instruments were piano and drums, and I only bought my first bass when I turned 36. A huge mistake. So much time wasted!!
But enough about me. LOL Keep up the superb work! 👊🏽

Strangely I have always thought him as a bass player/ singer first. I was around to buy the singles as they came out in the sixties. I was at school then. He was and still is a great bass player. I went on to play professionally for a few years and have gigged all my life and for a long time was in a Beatles tribute band as Lennon (The Upbeat Beatles). Interestingly I attended a Bass clinic at a music show and the clinic Featured John Entwhistle from The Who. He said that Paul McCartney was his biggest influence in bass playing, because he was the first bass player to change Bass playing from straight groove into melody lines. I totally agree with that. Absolute legend and he and the other three Beatles will always be my heroes

Hello Mr. LOB! You do some great videos on here!!!! You make a very fair comment about the list. The only reasons I put Gene Simmons at #6 is because he was tremendously original as a bass player in the 1970's both as a great lead singer and front man, and as a player who had huge "BIG" expression on the Kiss albums and especially on stage in the concerts. This huge "BIG" expressive sound on the bass that Gene created fit his monster type costumes, and it even added some intimidation in a fun way. Very original.... As a great bass player with his BIG BIG BIG sound Gene really knew how to get the listener's attention.

From what I understand about Paul McCartney's bass-playing is that he did so more out of necessity than his wanting to, so while he didn't prefer to play bass he did so with gusto, and did things with it that nobody else dreamed of.
