I liked Tarkovsky at first, but then after questioning myself, why are his films so existential, abstract and deliberately obscure at many episodes, I stopped thinking of him as one of the greatest directors. Many people can't understand these abstractions, cause it's simply not understood, why can't an artist make his thoughts clearer and more understandable for the benefits of the viewers, not for the benefits of the abstract, existential art
@@СергейАфанасенко-ъ5ш Anything worth knowing is difficult to understand. Life itself is mysterious. And death, too. Mystery is in the centre of not only art but science, too. Russian culture is so interesting precisely because it is focused on mystery in our relationships with others and the universe. Its depth is exceptional. Dostoevsky, Tolstoy Chekhov and others are in a different league than Hugo, Dickens or Balzac. Before Tolstoy, no-one described the process of dying in literature (in "Death of Ivan Iliych"). Before Dostoevsky, no-one penetrated the depth of human psyche to its very core. Tarkovsky was a pioneer of cinema of symbols. Obscurity of his films is intentional because life itself cannot be expressed in simple concepts and images.
@@MK-lm6hb Tolstoy is remarkable for describing in "The death of Ivan Ilyich" the absolute vanity of Ivan Ilyich's materialistic endeavours in life in quite realistic manner(for me as a reader), that's why I prefer more such writers like Tolstoy, in whose works it is more deliberately shown and told author's thought and his ideas, while being escorted by the art of images, in Tarkovsky I can see the opposite situation, the images are more important than the desire to express ideas and make them understandable.
