I have a Regal Blue and I have a NASO on the way.. along with established, Blue Faced Angel, Maroon Clown (gold striped) and a Purple Dottyback... all in my 75 gallon.. and I wanted to add the Purple Tang.. and your information says that will not have any compatibility issues... so far, I have mostly been trying to put Indo/South Pacific fish together... I guess the Red Sea Purple Tang will just have to be a misfit... and I want to get a Red Coris Wrasse as well... I am saving for the 300-500 gallon fish tanks now... my other tank will be a predator tank (groupers, eels, lionfish)... maybe the 75 gallon will be repurposed as a reef set up and another as an octopus tank...
Your knowledge is incredible Chuck thank you for all the help. We currently have a aqua cultured purple tang in QT. Along with a dejardini hippo and scopas. All about 2.5-3 inch. We plan to introduce them all at the same time.
Chuck your videos help me so much me amd the wife are bendge watching all of your videos. Should I get a purple or Desjardins sooner rather than later? We just added a small 2 spot bristle tooth tang into our tank.
Later. Both species can be very dominant and I think you should put them in after you’ve added all the less dominant tangs 😊 Thank You so much for the kind words ! It helps knowing I’m helping you !
Chuck, I made the mistake of buying a pink face wrasse and putting it in my 125 gallon reef tank. I bought this fish because the web site I bought it from listed the fish as peaceful as the temperament by mistake. I have tried every trap I know of to get this fish out because it is just hyper and chases some of the other fish around the tank. The only other thing I know to do is just leave it in the tank and put a couple of more fish in the tank that can hold their own against this wrasse. I have a purple, a sail fin tang and a blue eyed kole tang in the tank with a few other fish. The tangs and the fish that were in the tank before the wrasse seem to be doing ok. He chases the non tang fish on occasion. My question is can I put a fox face and a convict tang in with the tangs I already have in the tank because I feel they can hold their own against this wrasse and I have no other idea how to get it out without draining the tank.
Can I put a purple tang and a yellow tang in a 75 gallon reef tank ? I already have a blue tang and a Tominni tang with a set of clowns. Would it be ideal to put them in as the same smaller size ? Or one bigger than the other ?
They will definitely outgrow the tank, the sailfin requires a 90 minimum for a long term home. Look up a full size sailfin and you will see why 👍. The hippo tang requires an even larger tank as they grow to even larger sizes. I hope the fish and your tanks are doing well, Happy fishkeeping/reefing!
Hey Chuck great video I currently have a Yellow Tang & Atlantic blue in a 60 gallon. They have out grown that tank in a little more than a year so I'm upgrading to a 5ft 150 gallon. I would like to add a small Blue Hippo & Orange shoulder. Those tangs will be in quarantine for two months and then add all four tangs in the 150 at the same time. Do you think i will have any compatibility issues. Thanks again --MJ
Not in the slightest- actually, that’s a very good combination of tangs. My guess is the yellow tang will be the dominant fish so that would be the thing I would watch. High praise for successfully keeping an Atlantic blue tang - that is not an easy fish long term 🤙. Regal blue tangs are notorious for ich , so keep some reef medic on hand for little outbreaks. Otherwise congratulations on the 150 ( I love that tank) and thanks for comments! 😊🐟🐠
I have 4ft 100 gallon tank and was at our local fish store and saw a fabulous small sailfin tang and a purple tang. would these be a good combo for my tank . The fish are still very small and i i dont really want them to outgrow our forever tank so we have to remove them at a later date. we have plenty of rockwork in the tank
Ok, both of these are “zebra soma” tangs so if introduced at the same time I think it will work. They will tussle a bit and more than likely the purple tang will become the dominant fish but with a well rocked tank you should be fine . I have 3 service accounts where I have kept these together for years. They still fight a bit when they pass each other but no real problems to speak of 😊
Hi Chuck, Thanks for the great info! I'm really interested in the Kole Tang for my acquarium. I plan on upgrading to a bigger tank in 2 years. I currently have a 45 gallon with corals and other fishes. I do not have any Tangs but I would like to add one. The fishes that I have are Azure Damsels, Diamond Goby, Firefish, Ocellaris Clownfish, Cardinal, Japanese Swallow Tail Angel, Coral Beauty Angel, and a Six Line Wrasse! I know the Purple Tang is out of my price range for the moment. What others would you recommend? I still like the Kole Tang though!
I am thinking of setting up a 300 litre tank with some (few) rocks/corals. Is it possible to put 2x Nemo fish and and 2x Yellow tangs together in this tank???
My purple tang is probably 5 years old, he's been through a lot, he survived copper and prazi treatments, low PHs (almost 7), and the last one was an overnight accidental 0.030 specific gravity that killed everyone else in the tank (except him, a yellow watchman and a royal gramma). He's very shy, shoots out of the rocks to grab food or to chase another tank habitant. He is a gourmand and he has the "king of the tank" complex...
Please guide on adding fish order please. Iam setting up a 180gallon tank with minimalist rock structure. Similar to luo's reek tank. Sump is 65 gallon with brick media.. skimmer and refug. I want to keep 2 sets of clown fish occerlaris pair and black ice pair. Blonde Naso , powder blue, yellow, regal, one bristletooth(either 2 spot or sqaure tail)(maybe sailfin or not if advise). And six line, red coris and a pair of leopard wrasse. 2 or 3 blue green chromis. A foxface. A schooling banner. I like my wrasse and tangs very much. Please advise the order/method to put tanks. I plan to get small or juvenile if possible. Also please any ultarian fish would be appricated.
i know this is older but im trying to find a way to stop my purple tang from killing not jut other tangs but gobys , fire fish , flame hawk, well anything swimming in my tank including none stop aggression on my fox face. i love this fish. so much color but he killed 6 fish so far and hers the only tang. iv been thinking of adding tangs but i feel its jsut going to be one or the other that dies
Hi, I’m new to this channel, this video is very interesting, I am planning on getting a 380L tank which is approx 100 us gallons, I took a small scopes tang off of somebody about a year ago which had HLLE and was in bad shape. It’s much better now and scarring is starting to heal. Anyway I have always wanted a purple tang and was wondering when I get my 100 gallon if I can get a purple tang and add my scopes tang at the same time? Now I have also read 3 is better than 2, to spread out aggression so would 100 gallon be too small for 3 Zebrasoma’s? My scopes tang is not too big at the moment either
Wow. Loaded question - ok so you can mix multiple zebrasoma Tangs if they are added relatively close to the same time and are not of the exact same size. Typically I would recommend many hiding places and the more elaborate the rock work, the better. Purple tangs have a tendency to become very dominant so get one that is smaller than the scopus and I don’t think this would be any problem 😊 they will fight occasionally, but nothing to the point that should cost you either fish
Fishy Business SC thank you very much for the reply 👌 I will make sure the tank will have a suitable aquascape and the size of the scopas/ purple tangs is suitable 😄 do you think it would be better to have two rather than 3 assuming all of the aquascape is suitable ? If so is that due to tank size ?
Depends on the species . Dominant tangs like the Sohal/ Purple/ yellow/ etc need to be put in last . “Ich” prone tangs like powder blue/ Achilles/ powder brown / regal blue should go first . Tangs like the Naso/ sailfin / yellow eye/ tomini/ mimic/ etc can go at anytime. There are so many different tangs available we would have to take it fish by fish. Just make sure you go to a reputable dealer who can steer you in the right direction 😊

Hm this video brings to light a few things. I've seen numerous videos stating you should not put any tangs at all in anything less than 100 gallons. Then i hear you saying you could put 1 tang in 50g or less. Is the over-sized tank recommendations i hear from other hobbyist meant to combat the bio load from the tang? Awesome content & video
Thank You
I agree with you. Also some tanges showes strange behaviors towards coral. In general it's reef safe. But I have blue tang which nipping on corals.
A lot of tangs will nip, but I think they're usually just looking for algae
They have high metabolism feed 4 times a day. It's starving they swim lots in the ocean.
Awesome information cheers

I would keep tangs out of a nano tank unless for some reason you get a very very small specimen. Even then you will have to re-home it at some time 😊
