I lived in a house that had house centipedes. The whole, "if you have house centipedes, you don't have to worry about other bugs", is ridiculous. We got bedbugs and the house got infested with them (I won't bore you with that nightmare). The centipedes had no noticeable effect. And while house centipedes are harmless, other centipede species are aggressive, are venomous, and will bite.

My daughter invited a homeless girl to stay overnight in our house....just for one night. Well, the girl brought bedbugs with her. My daughter didn't tell my husband and I for fear that we would freak out. The bedbugs multiplied, moved to other rooms, and by the time we noticed, the whole house had them. We did EVERYTHING to eliminate them other than hire an exterminator, and could not get rid of them. My daughter finally got some centipedes and that did the trick. I kid you not. The centipedes devoured them....all of them. That happened about 5 years ago, and we've had zero bedbugs ever since.
@Michael C I'm wondering why some people who have made comments here said that centipedes don't do the job. It occurred to me that it may be because there are different kinds of centipedes. 'Our' centipedes did not look like the centipedes shown in the video. Ours were not brown/dark brown. They had a lot of white in them. But since you mentioned "pest control" AKA insecticide sprays, we bought every brand of insecticide we could find. None of them were very effective. My daughter had done her own research, and got the centipedes.....thank heavens. lol
@Michael C Speaking of heat treatment, I sprayed all our beds with a high pressure steamer, one day after the other after the other. No, I didn't heat up the house though. I could have bought one of those machines but didn't. We have too many things that would have been ruined....like many thousands of books in every room, including even the bathroom. I love books. lol oops- correction- not thousands of books in each room, but thousands altogether.

I grew up in Florida, where they are very common. I used to see them everyday, and would welcome them if they came inside. But they never did come inside. Not once for over a decade..
Of course those are fire centipedes; which do bite and can be scary I suppose, though the bite isn't bad at all outside of Southeast Asia and parts of the Amazon..
The video interchanges fire centipedes and house centipedes. House centipedes are less common in most of the world, but totally harmless.

It swelled like a quarter sized blister, popped, and became infected so I needed antibiotics. Not to mention it continued to itch for a month! Tbh, misleading video. The weird long-leggy ones are the house centipedes. The video also shows fire centipedes interchangeably for some reason. Fire centipedes are NOT like house centipedes. They are not harmless, and while you still probably have no reason to kill them, it's certainly understandable to do so.
Fire centipedes are the longer armored ones, with more sets of shorter legs. They are venomous and sometimes defensive. However, outside of a few jungle regions, their venom is actually very mild.
Depending on where you live; you most likely encountered a fire centipede; which can be considered a pest.

to be clear, the big kind of centipedes people keep as pets are very capable of biting and it's one of the most painful insect bites in the world. You don't want them running loose... *House* centipedes are mostly harmless but they can definitely bite too if they feel threatened; about as bad as a bee sting.

I've actually ran into a house centipede in my house about a couple years ago. Honestly I first saw it and freaked out because it literally looks like a parasite. But apparently my dad picked it up and it didn't bite him, kinda freaked me out but I'm less scared of them compared to before.

The opposite happened multiple time, I feel something crawling in my forehead and just think it’s my skin but then check the mirror to then find out it was actually an insect.
I've actually run across a few of these things in my home. The last several times I came across one, I resisted the urge to squish them, particularly after learning how beneficial they are. Still creepy as hell, but... I tolerate them.
