Franziskaner really has stood the test of time in the UK. I remember back in the 1990s as a teenager too young for the pub, helping my mum doing the shopping in Safeway on Friday evening. My reward for this was a bottle of beer to have when we got in. The Franziskaner caught my attention as it looked different compared with the others on the shelf.
I usually picked it, only occasionally opting for something else. I almost never drink at home now so rarely have it, but when I do I'm reminded it's still a good drink.

Just tried Franziskaner for the first time today, never tried it because it was more expensive than the other cheaper beers. Had a rough day today and I thought what the hell, might as well give it a shot. And oh man I got to say, this is one of the nicest beers I've ever had. Definitely washed away my stress when that first sip hit. the taste, the gas, the smoothness really washed away the pain. 😂😂

I'm 67 and I've tried Erdinger and the Erdinger Dunkel as a result of this excellent channel. I can't drink the Erdinger, the banana/cloves thing upsets my stomach. I'm not criticizing the beer, but it clearly doesn't agree with me.
I haven't tried the Franziskaner Weissbier, but I suspect I would have the same problem. I have to say, that the original description of Erdinger that you gave in a previous video was spot on.
The banana/cloves thing is very strong for me. The Erdinger Dunkel is another matter. I can drink that no problem and it reminds me of UK pubs (Great Yarmouth in particular) in the early 1970's
It was legal for a 14 year old to be in a pub (but not to drink alcohol). However I did have a drink of brown ale (loved it). The dunkel reminded me of that, along with the dart board and nicotine stained pub !

Best I had was back 1990, in a small German Brew pub in a village called Vohenstrauss, northern Bavaria near the Czech border. Strong, full flavoured and really cheap. The old landlady would give you a "cuff" around the head if you left the lid up on your Bier Krug up and still had Weissbier in it, as it signified you wanted another.

Lots of the big german breweries watered down their beer receipts, because the youth doesn't like strong beer. One exception is Oettinger (germanys lagest brewer), who are famous for their cheap beer. They even have their own cheap brand (5.0 Original) and brew lots of the supermarket beers (like for ALDI, Rewe and Penny). Also lots of the smaller breweries have better beer than the big companies.

Great thing about Erdinger is they do both a filtered (clear) version and a dark (dunkel). I couldn`t agree more with your review. The Erdinger is a very unique style of Weissbier. It is very pale and has a unique taste. In comparison it is kinda watery. I can smell hints of citrus and some malty flavor. It is probably a good beer for a hot summer day in a beer garden or when you are hiking, but I personally prefer a richer Weissbier (with banana flavor) like the Franziskaner. My absolute favorites are Maisel's Weisse from Bayreuth and Schneider Weisse from Munich. Like the Erdinger they use the bayerische Edelreifung which is a second fermentation in the bottle. They add some fresh wort and yeast to the beer before they bottle it and store it for another month or so before they ship it. Thats why the Erdinger has that small label on the bottle.

Maisels Weiße is the best Weißbier I have ever had, although just in terms of sheer accessibility I love Franziskaner the most because it’s available basically everywhere but still retains the absolute standard of what is expected from weizens. Erdinger falters at selling beer at such a massive volume which reduces the quality as a consequence. It’s not like I overly dislike Erdinger, I actually don’t mind drinking it, it’s just what is expected when production is expanded to such a degree. I think Erdinger is like tap 7 Schneider Weisse, you either like it or dislike it because it’s pretty different from your standard Hefeweizen.

Weihenstephaner is the best but i also like Franziskaner.. Erdinger and Paulaner are okay too but not as good as those other two I think..

100% agree tried both from Tesco and don't really 'get' Erdinger, it isn't even close.🙂

Franziskaner used to be 5.2% ABV about a decade ago

It looks like the UK Erdinger is brewed by Carlsberg Marstons, would be interesting to compare it to the real German version

Interesting. Are you sure they aren't just an importer? In Sweden we get the real German version but it's still quite bland compared to Franziskaner, Paulaner etc. It's not a bad beer by any means but I'd only get it if no other weissbier were available.

Why don't you make comparison between Franziskaner and paulaner

  • @Paul_Turvey
    @Paul_Turvey Год назад +1

For me I tried both, plus Paulaner, without doubt Paulaner is the best for me, Franziskaner def has more body and flavour, to me Erdinger has a lighter taste to it, Paulaner just hits the spot for me🙂, Si get yourself to Majestic Wines, there's one in Cardiff I think, you can get a case of Paulaner (12) for £21.60,cheaper than the supermarkets 👍🍺

Hello I’ve just recently stumbled upon your channel and today I was in Sainsburys and found a nice four pack of Erdinger’s I assumed they were 500ml and have just seen they’re 330ml! Anyways, I know you’ve done a review of Patronus but I was wondering if you could do a comparison between Erdinger and Patronus in terms of price and taste. I’ve tried them both but feel I may have been scammed thinking a 4 pack of 330ml Erdingers for £4.75 is a better deal than just getting 3 bottles of Patronus

    Schneider, for the win.
All the Weissbier flavours, plus one or two extra. Slightly darker colour and Munich malt character.

Agree, Erdington is a bit bland for me. In my opinion, Andechs make the best Weissbier. Weihenstephan also make a belter. For UK beer Geipel in North Wales do a great Weiss
