Very informative video. It is a hit-and-miss issue using lacquer over plastic. I always prime my models with automotive primer no matter what I topcoat with and doing so has worked for well over 40 builds so far. As for a shine, being lacquer, it should polish out very nicely.
I use spray Duplicolor clear on a regular basis and rarely have trouble. I mist coat over decals then lay it on heavy. I always polish to achieve a brilliant shine. I will try a can since it’s a better deal. Thanks!
It works for me as well, I don't use Mr.Color Levelling Thinner though. I use generic lacquer thinner to thin the dupli-color clear gloss/matte to shoot out of an air-brush, granted I only exclusively use Tamiya, Mr.Color, Testors and Dupli-Color paints. Also works for protecting parts/paints/finishes for Tamiya panel liners.
Years ago autobody painters would spray unthinned or lightly thinned lacquers at low pressure to make cobwebs in their paint jobs. It came out about like what you showed but a little thicker.
Nice test! I've had a lot of similar results with mixing different products together on a project and I've found that for me if put a couple of coats of water based poly down over something like acrylic, I can put about anything on over that. It has to be a couple of good coats though or it will eat through and the acrylic will lift. I mix it up all the time now having that trick. It does work for some chromes so they aren't affected by the solvents. If I'm using a solvent based clear, I also just do some dust coats initially and let them fully dry before I put down some wet coats.
It spiderweb because it's old, even though you just got it its probably been sitting on the shelf for a long time, I used to used to use it that how I know this
Can't wait for YOUR paint so I can standardize my paints. Please keep us posted on how it's going BTW I went to a bulk supply chef store and got tons of small sticks and cups cheap - like you say last years. Cheers till the next one. Plus New subscriber
I’m so glad you made this video. I had purchased this clear and tried spraying it with my airbrush and had it spiderwebed like this. Good to know the leveling thinner works. I wonder how it would work over different acrylics?
I put it over folk art multi surface line no problem. Cotton candy with the primer going to thin it next time I prime thanks Robert 4 everything you do 4 the community
Great video! The issue is it requires a "retarder" or slow thinner. I work in the screen printing industry (everything from textiles to graphics in the past but all solar, medical device, electronic and industrial now)....we print and/or spray virtually anything that is liquid at one time or another. That was a GREAT spider-webbing demo! Excellent solution!
Silly string issue is similar to what I experience with your ME Air force paints without additional thinning. The resin is partially polymerizing mid air.
I'm curious to see if you get a responce from Dupli-color on thinning down when directions say not to, marvelous that you haved provided us with questioning manufacturer recommendations, score another for Rex! 🎉🍻
Interesting. I have tried some automotive 2K clear gloss, but I'm somewhat wary about the health risks associated with 2K clear gloss (even with using a respirator & spraybooth). I did buy a tin of automotive 1 part acrylic clear gloss (Lecher Acrifan 1K clear) Maybe I need to try some more experiments with the 1K clear.
I have been using the KBS clear that you reviewed a year or so ago and thinned 50/50 with their thinner and never had any problems. I found if it was sprayed neat it struggled to get through a .5 or .7 needle. Not sure I'd try this Duplicolor though. Worth the test though as you don't know till you give it a go.
Would like to see you try cerakote varnish they have matte and gloss, I bought it but I’m scared to use it because I’m not sure, on the website they have used it on game controllers.
The GSW paint shaker is AWFUL. Waste of money! Stick with your mini Vortex by 4E’s. Yeah it’s expensive but has been worth every single penny. You get what you pay for!
I just found out the guys in England couldn't get the holders I just sent some overseas those buyers will have pay shipping US buyers still get free shipping
I have a bunch of guys in my therapy that swear by this along with the paint. However, I haven't had much luck with either. I have found with both, your best bet is to decant it and let it gas out. Then I thin it with our favorite leveling thinner. But honestly, compared to any other lacquer paint out there on the market, I really am not a fan. And it's really to bad. I saw it on the shelf at my local dollar days (dollar style store) and couldn't beat the price. Or could I? 🤔
They're both comparable but the KBS needs it's own special thinner which adds to the cost. I do like the KBS a little but more as it shines better without buffing but these are both pretty close in quality
that GSW shaker is horrible, i have one, that plastic thing you stick the rubbers on breaks after couple of uses, and they know how bad it is since they sell that plastic part separately
lacquer is a no no on waterborne/acrylic paint if it has a sheen. The chemicals that give the paint it's sheen will react with the lacquer causing it to bubble/wrinkle. The base coat must be flat.
Also lacquer thinner is powerful stuff and if over done in the thinning process may cause similar issues. I would experiment with ratios of lacquer to thinner and only use the bare minimum of thinner to achieve the desired consistency.
ITS NOT GONNA SHINE IF THE BASE HAS A ROUGH TEXTURE. THE ACRYLICS WILL ABSORB THE FIRST COAT. ITS NOT YOUR PAINT LINE. ITS COATS AND WHETHER THE PART WAS PROPERLY SANDED, PUSHING YOUR PAINT LINE OVER OTHERS IS JUST A SALES TACTIC, THAT I WISH YOU WOULD BE A BIT CLEARER WITH YOUR VIEWERS. IM SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS VIDEO, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE ENJOYED THE MAJORITY OF YOUR OTHER VIDEOS......
Maybe not meant to be, but can still work. I just sprayed automotive 2k clear over regular 3rd gen Ak acrylic and it worked great (except for a couple air bubbles I somehow managed to get on the surface *sigh* ).
@jasoncombs3232 is correct. Another way to look at it - its an automotive product meant to be used over several layers of paint made by the same company. They are meant to work together. They are also intended to be light-fast and weather resistant. The quick drying time is another clue as to how volatile it is. ... So this NOT a smart product. The correct application of it is dependent on the applicator's ability and willingness to use it in an environment that will allow it finish in the way we want. That includes special lights, controlled temps, air filtering and spray equipment. For the hobbyist - and please take note that this is coming from a real cheap-ass - the savings in the long run would not be worth it to me for having to test it on basically everything. That being said, car guys and people who work mostly with volatile coatings that are meant to reproduce industrial processes any way, will probably love this product because, coming from that end, it IS more of a smart product. Thank you for this demo Robert! You probably saved at least a few cherished decals. You're like the hobby version of that guy in the WW2 movie who throws himself on the barbed wire so the rest of us can get past running over you!
Yup. Paint comparability is a wounderous thing, It's wonderful when it works and a " wonder why" when it doesn't. Thanks to another educational video.

Barbatos! I literally just asked about this on reddit! Going to get a can tomorrow!!! You just saved me a ton of time!
It works for me! I've used it on and off on builds for the last 5 years or so.
Is there a matte version of this?
Super interesting, putting on my list to try down the road. Looking forward to seeing your paints too
Thanks, well worth the watch.

Welcome aboard my friend. My new paints will be out before the end of the month. Big video on them coming
@@barbatosrex9473 Awesome, definitely standing by to see video, I had no idea you were so close
Shoot BR, maybe next time throw a little masking tape on the painted part of the spoon so we can see side by side the clear vs. just the paint

You're such a master of paint that you created your own. Sweet...
You never made paint in art class as a kid? It's super easy.

Thank you for sharing, your colors are looking fantastic. Everyone keep yourselves and love ones safe and healthy and remember to SMILE 😊God Bless 🙏
Did you ever test the Duplicolor paint shop primer out of the can? I've thought about trying in with Mr. Hobby leveling thinner 🤔

Great video, learn some important information. Thanks.
I'd like to see you do a test of the Duplicolor Paint Shop primer.
Thank you for all the great information.

Back to the cotton candy Benchhhh!!!
Great info, thanks for the video!
Great information- individual test may vary :)
I'm guessing the KBS clear you tested a while back works better than this Duplicolor?
oh that new red looks good, Nocturno Rouge would be a good name alas it will be unavailable in the UK
These will be shopping worldwide
Nice little informational video Robert just wondering if it clear is the same stuff thats in that's on thare raddle can
I think it's a different formula as it doesn't seem to melt plastics like the cans
Would like to see you try cerakote varnish they have matte and gloss, I bought it but I’m scared to use it because I’m not sure, on the website they have used it on game controllers.

Bummed to hear!!
Yeah, GSW not their greatest product. It only spins, not really enough to mix thick paints
More you spray of that clear or any auto motive clear the more layers u spray and more gloss you will get
Never did like dupli colors always had mixed reactions
Autozone has a handful of primers by a company called uPol. Could you do a video test of those?
I have some here, I'll try and test it soon
I just found out the guys in England couldn't get the holders I just sent some overseas those buyers will have pay shipping US buyers still get free shipping

Have you tried your new paint on AMT and Revell plastic? Just curious where your new paint is car grade.
what, in your opinion is the best possible gloss coat? do you think there is a difference between - for example - diamond and dupli? thanks!
If you were to rate this with, say the Holloway House Quick Shine floor care stuff...which would you choose?
Do you have a video on carbon fiber decals? I been looking at hasegawa but hear scale motorsports is also good.
I don't but Ive used Tamiya Carbon Fiber decals and those were good
Me, it is the dark blue at 10:30 Awesome
How do you think this compares with KBS Diamond gloss?
They're both comparable but the KBS needs it's own special thinner which adds to the cost. I do like the KBS a little but more as it shines better without buffing but these are both pretty close in quality
Ha, Spider Man shooting webs in scale!
Great job, but you said it was $35 a can, in BC it is now $55 dollars a can plus taxes!!! Not so cheap now
that GSW shaker is horrible, i have one, that plastic thing you stick the rubbers on breaks after couple of uses, and they know how bad it is since they sell that plastic part separately
Could it be that it's the thinner that's causing the problem like if you use straight lacquer thinner with most hobby paints?
Question,
When it dries over a Light Gray or White, does it dry Yellow???
I didn't notice any yellow tint
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks.
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks.

Great info, that's a fact that I often forget to mention. That's why acrylic primers work fine
Also lacquer thinner is powerful stuff and if over done in the thinning process may cause similar issues. I would experiment with ratios of lacquer to thinner and only use the bare minimum of thinner to achieve the desired consistency.
cotton candy= drying too fast from the airbrush= use self levelling/slow drying/retarder thinner
Does this work any good with the mica powders???
what do you mean hot when you are talking about selecting a thinner for it?
hot meaning its too strong and could melt the plastic
that respirator looks like a 3m 6000 clone
How about calling your new red werewolf red
will it work with rustolium paints in can
I wouldn't put a lacquer on top of a enamel. Remember the layering goes LEA, that's lacquer, Enamel and acrylic.

Auto grade clears are super hot. Not ment to be sprayed on your hobby models. Especially if you are a true artist. Stick to hobby grade clears.
