    Another H.E.R. chords video: • H.E.R. Type Chords II ...
    In this video we look at a H.E.R. inspired R&B chord progression I cooked up. This chord progression features some of my favourite types of chords; the minor 9 in root position, the dominant 7 flat 9 and the dominant 9 sus4. If you take nothing else from this lesson, here's three chords to add to your arsenal.

  • @DanThePianoManNZ
    @DanThePianoManNZ 4 года назад +89

    I’d say it’s in D minor as all chords fit into the key of D minor [D E F G A Bb C D) by using a mixture of the D harmonic minor scale (D E F G A Bb C#D), D melodic minor (D E F G A B C# D), and the D minor blues scale (D F G G# A C D) which are some of the basic scales used in R&B music. As you mentioned, You could also use the C major scale to improvise over this but really you would just be playing D Dorian scale (D E F G A B C D) which is the same notes as C major but starting on a D. Chord 1 can also be looked at as a rootless D minor9 Chord creating a perfect cadence.

    Could you explain "how" the chord progression is built? While it's good to explain the chords themselves, it would be even more useful to explain how to construct a chord progression. For example, what is the tonal center, what are the chord substitutions and where those substitutions come from. Knowing the chords enables one to repeat it. Knowing how to construct a progression unlocks freedom to create.

    • @stefanguy
      @stefanguy  5 лет назад +62

      Hey Mark, thanks for the feedback, I totally get what you're saying. However in all honesty, it's stuff I don't really know myself. This is a beat making channel first and foremost but I decided to share the little I do know around this stuff to help my audience as and where I can. I'll continue to study and increase my knowledge so that I'm able to improve these videos. For now, I'd advise people to check out other channels that are more focused on theory and go into depth, there's plenty out there. Again thanks for the feedback, it's something I need to aim for!

    • @johnnykirchens3692
      @johnnykirchens3692 5 лет назад +61

      @Mark Davenport Fmaj7 is the I ( tonal centre ) - A7/b9 is V/vi ( Means dominant of Dm9, also known as secondary dominants) - Dm9 is vi - G#dim is tritone substitution of Dm9- G/A or A9sus4 is like an "Extension" of the following A7. That Means it leads smoothly into the A7 and the A7 is the V/vi, which is actually our second chord from the Progression, ( A7/b9 ) a secondary dominant. Typically, it should resolve to Dm9 like before BUT because Dm9 and Fmaj7 are about the Same from their respective notes, you can imply a Fmaj7 instead of Dm9.

    • @TJ-hs1qm
      @TJ-hs1qm 5 лет назад +1

      @@johnnykirchens3692 or perhaps you can even think of Amaj and Cmaj as equivalent chords, so that the Amaj then implies the Cmaj which in return gives you the 2-5-1 turn around... G - C - F . but that's just me speculating.

      @markdavenport2613 5 лет назад +5

      @Stefan Guy I truly appreciate your candor. Thanks for posting. You don't really need the deep theory stuff to make good music. It mainly helps explain it's mechanics and discover you're options. Keep doing what you're doing and enjoy it above all else.

    I'm a newbie when it comes to more advanced chord progressions, but for other newbies like me, if I may suggest, there is a simpler version of this chord progression that works very well: Fmaj7 A7b9 Dm7 E7. The E7 (first inversion) works really well in the last 4th chord, in my opinion it sounds fuller than the G#dim.

    I never knew you could use A7B7 as a link chord to the D minor. I always used it for D major. Useful!!!!

    I think this is in the key of A minor, I know the chord isn't there, but the F7 chord at the beginnig doesn't sound so stable, plus we never have the dominant chord to it (C major). What we do have is the G#dim7 which can function as a dominant to A minor. Moreover it comes after the Dm9 chord, those 2 can function as sort of a cadence to A minor (the G# in the bass doesn't really make it a cadence but it can sound like one). Not only that, after the G#, we have A in the bass, so it almost resolves to the home key, but the upper voices already lead to the next chords.

      @@davidfaustino4476 A minor is not the same as C major, not everything in A minor is in C major, actually nothing is, and nor is it vice versa.

      the first chord is always stable because there is no context yet. you cant find a key with just this, you need melodies and bass

      @@MrFree-vj8qj since when the first chord had to be stable? Music is not as simple as that
