  • PINE GROVE GHOST TOWN, NEVADA
    The first discoveries of gold were made on some outcroppings on the north side of the canyon at the town of Pine Grove in 1866 by William Wilson, a resident of Mason Valley. For some years the district was called the Wilson, after its discoverer, but the name of Pine Grove was finally adopted from a grove of pinon tress, which the Indians visit annually to gather nuts. In 1869, according to a report, there were several “arrastra” - a primitive mill for grinding and pulverizing ore, and a 10-stamp mill in operation. The Wheeler mine, on the south side of the canyon, about three-fourths of a mile out of town, was discovered shortly after the Wilson. By 1868, a post office had opened, along with a weekly newspaper. The population at the time was 200. The camp reached its peak in population in the early 1870s with 600 residents.
    The settlement, at its height, was divided into five sections and was spread out for a mile. It offered five saloons, three hotels, multiple stores, blacksmith shops, a dance hall, barber shops, a school, livery stable and two doctors' offices. Pine Grove was a regional supply center. Two mill expansions were made in 1882, and mining was robust in the 1880s. After the economic depression in the U.S. in 1893, mine production was slowly abandoned.
    Work started again in the mines between 1900 and 1910, but production never reached the activity of the 1870s and 1880s. There was limited prospecting in the area in the early 1900s, but all mining had ceased by 1918. The remaining town residents left Pine Grove by the 1930s.

      Thanks again Phyllis. The day was overcast, and the photos and videos did not turn out like normal Nevada projects with brilliant skies and beautiful/colorful landscapes. But it was good trip non the less.

      Thanks again for liking the video. Yes, I was without the coffee because there was no place nearby that was less than half a day's drive. So, I really should have had two cups for this particular adventure. Thanks for noticing. LOL!!

    This video is a year old. Hope I get a response to my question. I've watched most of your videos. Great job! Your research of history brings these stories to life. I'm just old enough to remember the generation that worked the mines and land in the first half of the 20th century. Our American story has always been filled with change, chaos, injustice, innovation and miracles. It's our story and it's what makes us great. This is not the first continent in world history that was conquered. But now, we are on a collision course and I pray most of the younger generations carry the torch of our identity and history. As a veteran, I fear the change that may be coming our way. Anyway, my question is about a soundtrack in this video. It starts at 13:36. What is the name of the track and artist. Thanks for these videos.

      Thanks so much for watching the videos. Unfortunately, my raw file has been corrupted for this video. I have not been able to recover it. Therefore, I cannot answer your question about the soundtrack. I used to have a subscription to "Epidemic Sound" were I got all my early video music. That subscription got to be so expensive that I discontinued it. From what I can tell from my viewers, it seems like a small niche group audience and mostly older. I am afraid you may be correct on the younger folks not having any interest in our wonderful history. It certainly seems that the history taught in our public schools today, has been so corrupted and perverted that no one has any interest. Thanks again for watching.

    Great video! We are planning to explore this area soon and, since you've been there, I had a few questions for ya. One, since you came in on side-x-sides (as we will be also), what trail/road did you use to come in? Did you drive down Pine Grove Rd and trail in from the east, or did you drive down 338 and trail in from the west? Also, are the trails to the townsite smooth enough for a truck and camper trailer? If no, do you know of a good area nearby to set up a base camp? Thanks for any help or advice!

      @GhostTownWonders  Год назад +2

      Erik, we came in with side by sides from the west. The trails were fine for those. However, not recommended for full size vehicles as the trail narrows quite significantly with some side sloping along the trail. I have not been from the east but I saw several full size vehicles coming from that direction and I am sure there are some good base camp sites along the way. Enjoy and be safe.
