sunflower shoots are attacked by Sclerotina sclerotorium and this fungus is very contagious. I treat the seeds with 2% hydrogen peroxide along with a bit of soap for 30 minutes, maybe 40 minutes would be better, but 30 minutes hasn't killed the seeds so far. the problem is, that the fungal spores are quite tough to kill, unlike bacteria. using a surfactant (soap) does actually improve the effectiveness of the peroxide. another method is to use potassium bicarbonate (about 2.5g per liter) in the early germination stages. potassium bicarbonate inhibits growth of the fungal hyphae and the extra potassium increases the turgidity of the shoots
now I finally got rid of sclerotinia mold. and there's only one fungicide-free way to do it. 1. step: get rid of all fruit flies and gnats, they love to hang out among the sunflower shoots and they infect all the sprouts they touch. once you have sclerotinia the flies will keep spreading it. 2. soak the seeds in 0.3-0.4% (3-4g per liter) ammonium bicarbonate for about 8h. No other bicarbonate will kill the fungus, it must be ammonium. After soaking your seeds will be 100% free of sclerotinia, but they still may have Pythium (damping off) spores. These are not as contagious, though. 3. in case you spot sclerotinia mold in your shoots again, tear out the affected part plus a buffer zone to prevent further infection.

Great video! Just one question, why do you combine vinegar and hydrogen peroxide? The antimicrobial properties that hydrogen peroxide has comes from it's high pH, vinegar has a low pH by mixing the two you are lessening the antimicrobial properties of the hydrogen peroxide. You might get away with reducing the hydrogen peroxide level and not adding the vinegar. Unless the salt which is formed from the acid base reaction is really what is keeping the molds in check, but that seems unlikely. Anyway keep up the good work\videos!
Are you sure the antimicrobial properties come from the pH of peroxide? The chain reaction that makes peroxide so powerful it's the reactive oxygen that is liberated when the peroxide breaks down. This oxygen oxydates organical matter and the high pH accelerates the chain reaction. That's why common hydrogen peroxide, sold in pharmacies, comes with some sort of acidic substance as a stabilizer. So I believe the vinegar helps as both microbial substance as a natural stabilizer to hydrogen peroxide in the solution with water.

My grandfather had a root cellar and he used onion bags full of real charcoal.. The charcoal would absorb the excess moisture in the summer and in the winter, it would release its excess moisture. So it's self regulating. I also read that the Japanese used charcoal in their basement to eliminate dampness. Just an idea.
Thanks! I use bottom watering for my greens, it takes time but my farm is not as big as yours. In the future I want to build a big flood and drain table to water the microgreens where they stand from the bottom. It would work in your green house as well Curtis. I never have any mold :-)
I just started 4 trays of seeds on coir mats 3 days ago, this morning, the brocolli and 2 week blend are full of mold in germination stage..geesh! So I just sprayed with peroxide 3% without knowing anything...I think the mats are too thick too. I have the seeded mats in the black perforated trays which are set within the solid trays and covered for germination time with another black solid tray. Seems too much humidity? i like the idea of watering from below and NOT having any mold issues. Help...any other suggestions?

I think the strategy is to leave them in blackout until the roots are firmly engaged with the soil and hulls are beginning to break free from rubbing against the top of the top tray ("blackout dome").
I have never had mold on sunflower. Today I had to dump a tray of garlic chives. It looked like grey carpet. In the mold was maggots! I grow out side where it been 85-110F! Broccoli is another I have mold issue with in this heat!

It's a pump sprayer or pump spray bottle, they're sold at many garden centers and online. Just make sure it's food grade plastic (HDPE or PP). It will be labeled on the bottom.
I am curious about this as well. I am also curious about what strength of hydrogen peroxide is used in the 1.5 l sprayer he uses to spray the flats. There’s a big difference in 3% hydrogen peroxide and the 15% I have.
Have you considered using ozone in water for fungus - mold - disinfection? It's safe and organic and once set up, you could use it liberally throughout the farm

There have to be other ways to stop mold. Investing hundreds of dollars and all that electric being used does not counter the cost. One of the main points in growing is that it's cheaper than the market. Yes, growing for health value is why I do it, but I still want a ratio of product and cost value. I thought during the summer, I could get good airflow by growing them in a screen house. The idea of baking soda is something I will try too. Great info !!!!!!
Good day to all . One excellent and natural anti fungicide is the plant horsetail herb ( Equisetum ravens) spraying the plants twice a week will be no fungi problem. You can collect horsetail from a garden yard or in the wild, horsetail reproduce by rizomas and in some areas can be invasive, once you collect it chop it in small pieces and than use one pound of horsetail on five litter of water, most recommended is to use rain, pond or spring water or use tap water just let it repose for 48 hours to let go the chlorine, boil this mix for 20 minutes and not use an aluminum pot can be an iron or stainless steel pot and use a wood spoon to stir up the mix, let it cool and let it stand for 48 hours it will turn a brown greenish color and thus the concentrate will absorbe the properties from the horsetail, than use a fine strainer and strain the mix, the horsetail remained use it as compost and your horsetail infusion save it in plastic containers fill it up the most you can so you can prevent less air , you can save the infusion containers inside your fridge up for a year or place it inside a black plastic bag and save it up for four months under cool storage conditions than you can use it in ratio 2 litter in horsetail infusion to 4 litters of clean water and spray every 2 weeks for fungi control.
hey curtis, the sprayer you're using- is it reliable? I can never buy one of those things without it clogging up after 3 weeks of use. Even after cleaning them they still work spottily.

So do you spray for the mold on sunflowers by default, or do you always check every tray. In this video anyway you seemed to barely be able to find the mold, and then sprayed all the flats. No judgement, just asking. I was sprouting fodder for my chickens for a while and quite due to not being able to really control the mold. Would love to get back to it.
Curtis, Where are you getting food grade H2O2? Maybe it's because I'm in a rural-ish part of the US, but I'm having a difficult time finding 35% Hydrogen Peroxide and most online retailers are carrying a diluted version to avoid hazmat shipping fees.
If may I ask, can you try mixing water and coconut oil. Then spray like you do with water-vinegar-hydrogenperoxide mix. Just a small portion. And see if it works against it. I don't know if it works but someone told me that could be work, I don't have any chance to try.

So, I use vinegar as a herbicide, and it is Hell-a effective at killing anything green I hit it with. Is your solution so diluted that the vinegar doesn't take out your crops? What if you omitted the vinegar entirely? What about using a little citric acid instead? In my experience in high concentrations it can be just as strong as vinegar but in low dose it seems a bit mild(er)?

Yes, but not for direct food contact and bleach loses efficacy very quickly when soil is involved. Tsunami can be sprayed on the crop to help mitigate mold problems.
Would putting out trays or plates of desicant(?) make a difference in the humidity, or would it just be a waste of time and effort, and mun? Also, if you could give the imperial measurements for amounts that would be nice, but if not, I'll just google it, so no biggie if it is too much of a hassle.
What do you use to control fungus on outdoor plants like zuchinni, pattypans, etc? Often we get cool damp summers where I am so we often get so much fungus on the leaves (or mold.. not sure what it is) it really looks terrible. If it is not too crazy, it does not affect how much product I get from them but it looks awful! I like to try & stay as organic as I can. Does the vinegar/Hydrogen Peroxide mix work with this as well? (aside from trying to keep the leaves dry/watering at the roots instead of from top)

I can't guarantee it 100%, but using some sort of potassium supplementation will increase the turgidity of the shoots and the hulls will pop off more easily. sources of potassium would be: potassium bicarbonate, potassium sulfate, or my favorite: wood ash with 10% (by weight) concentrated sulfuric acid. the acidified wood ash contains ±everything plants need except nitrogen which is abundant in the seed anyway.
Hi Curtis. If and when you get seeds that turn to mush in among your already growing microgreens - especially large seeds do you pick them out, or leave them in situ. I'm testing out some old chickpea seeds I had in the kitchen cupboard, I'm not intending to sell them, just testing my setup. About 70% have germinated with 1.5 inches of green growth - but they stink! Not sure if it was the water or manky seeds in the tray.

I was getting mold on my wheat grass and simply spread baking soda on the soil and use baking soda mixed with water to water and never had mold again!

Takes alot of time if you've got lots going on though.
I have the most mold problems with wheat. Sometimes sunflowers and peas. I use 1 tsp of Grapefruit Seed Extract in 1 at of water.

You can collect horsetail from a garden yard or in the wild, horsetail reproduce by rizomas and in some areas can be invasive, once you collect it chop it in small pieces and than use one pound of horsetail on five litter of water, most recommended is to use rain, pond or spring water or use tap water just let it repose for 48 hours to let go the chlorine, boil this mix for 20 minutes and not use an aluminum pot can be an iron or stainless steel pot and use a wood spoon to stir up the mix, let it cool and let it stand for 48 hours it will turn a brown greenish color and thus the concentrate will absorbe the properties from the horsetail, than use a fine strainer and strain the mix, the horsetail remained use it as compost and your horsetail infusion save it in plastic containers fill it up the most you can so you can prevent less air , you can save the infusion containers inside your fridge up for a year or place it inside a black plastic bag and save it up for four months under cool storage conditions
than you can use it in ratio 2 litter in horsetail infusion to 4 litters of clean water and spray every 2 weeks for fungi control.

hey curtis, the sprayer you're using- is it reliable? I can never buy one of those things without it clogging up after 3 weeks of use. Even after cleaning them they still work spottily.

So do you spray for the mold on sunflowers by default, or do you always check every tray. In this video anyway you seemed to barely be able to find the mold, and then sprayed all the flats. No judgement, just asking. I was sprouting fodder for my chickens for a while and quite due to not being able to really control the mold. Would love to get back to it.

Where are you getting food grade H2O2? Maybe it's because I'm in a rural-ish part of the US, but I'm having a difficult time finding 35% Hydrogen Peroxide and most online retailers are carrying a diluted version to avoid hazmat shipping fees.

If may I ask, can you try mixing water and coconut oil. Then spray like you do with water-vinegar-hydrogenperoxide mix. Just a small portion. And see if it works against it. I don't know if it works but someone told me that could be work, I don't have any chance to try.

mold mold mold..day 3 germination 1st time grower. I wonder if we needed to disinfect the new coco coir matting at same time we soaked them for the 24 hrs? Also wonder if they are also just too thick? and should they be covered during germ. period to avoid light? We did but wondering if just not enuff air circulation and a build up of humidity?

So, I use vinegar as a herbicide, and it is Hell-a effective at killing anything green I hit it with. Is your solution so diluted that the vinegar doesn't take out your crops? What if you omitted the vinegar entirely? What about using a little citric acid instead? In my experience in high concentrations it can be just as strong as vinegar but in low dose it seems a bit mild(er)?
you say you dip the trays for sterilization - I can't find what the ratio is for that? I grow seedlings in polystyrene trays and look for a safe, organic way to sterilize them before reusing them... I would appreciate very much your advice

Yes, but not for direct food contact and bleach loses efficacy very quickly when soil is involved. Tsunami can be sprayed on the crop to help mitigate mold problems.

What do you use to control fungus on outdoor plants like zuchinni, pattypans, etc? Often we get cool damp summers where I am so we often get so much fungus on the leaves (or mold.. not sure what it is) it really looks terrible. If it is not too crazy, it does not affect how much product I get from them but it looks awful! I like to try & stay as organic as I can. Does the vinegar/Hydrogen Peroxide mix work with this as well? (aside from trying to keep the leaves dry/watering at the roots instead of from top)

I can't guarantee it 100%, but using some sort of potassium supplementation will increase the turgidity of the shoots and the hulls will pop off more easily. sources of potassium would be: potassium bicarbonate, potassium sulfate, or my favorite: wood ash with 10% (by weight) concentrated sulfuric acid. the acidified wood ash contains ±everything plants need except nitrogen which is abundant in the seed anyway.

Hi Curtis. If and when you get seeds that turn to mush in among your already growing microgreens - especially large seeds do you pick them out, or leave them in situ.
I'm testing out some old chickpea seeds I had in the kitchen cupboard, I'm not intending to sell them, just testing my setup. About 70% have germinated with 1.5 inches of green growth - but they stink!
Not sure if it was the water or manky seeds in the tray.
