Thanks for your experienced guidance. Until yesterday, I knew OF Bill Evans more than I knew his unique jazz stylings across a HUGE range of stylings. I knew Keith Jarrett and McCoy Tyner well, especially because they (AND Count Basie) played a nightclub that i co-owned in the 1970s. But Bill Evans was more a near-blank slate in my sound-memory-banks.
I don't even remember what prompted me this week to start listening to Bill Evans,
but since I started, my background music while I work in my home office has been nearly NON-STOP Bill Evans. What I've truly LOVED, probably even more than his lovely, liquid playing is his incredible versatility! The Evans recordings I've explored rang from mellow laidback jazz on this record and Moon Beams, for example, to the high-energy swing of "On Green Dolphin Street."
His solo improvisation rivals Keith Jarrett (whom I love), but while Jarrett is 'deadly serious' when he's playing, Bill Evans rivals Jarrett for the virtuosity of his improvisational playing, then manages to insert 'musical quotations' from ALL sorts of musical genres, some as unexpected as 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town!' Yet he inserts these 'musical quotations' so quickly and artfully, it is never jarring to the listener or the flow of the music, (For an EXTENDED example that works brilliantly, listen to what he does with Irish classic "Danny Boy" on the album "Time Remembered"
The variety of styles he's mastered explains why he has featured so many different sidemen--but ALL brilliant--on different recordings. "Horses for courses," as we say in Australia! His tragic death in 1980 at just 51 with the (according to Wikipedia) 'cause of death...a combination of peptic ulcer, cirrhosis, bronchial pneumonia, and untreated hepatitis. Evans's friend Gene Lees described Evans's struggle with drugs as "the longest suicide in history." '
The large number and enormous variety of recordings he left us are the jazz equivalent of Mozart's prolific genius through JUST 35 YEARS! Imagine the jazz recordings the world was ROBBED of because Bill Evans did NOT live a full life span like Duke Ellington (75) or Count Basie (80)! [Both continued creating and playing WELL INTO OLD AGE: I know that personally because Count Basie (and his Orchestra) opened our nightclub in 1976 when he was 72.]
Since that DIDN'T happen, I just hope that Bill is playing in a FABULOUS HEAVENLY JAZZ ENSEMBLE with John Coltrane, Miles Davis and other Jazz Geniuses who have 'shuffled off this mortal coil...'

***** well Rich thanks for your kind remark and I know straight away that you are one of the good guys because jazz club owners mostly were in days gone by.working long hours for peanuts for the love of our music.with regard to bill I listen to him most days we are so lucky to have his music so readily available.i felt the loss of scott la faro dealt a big blow to bill that trio i.m.h.o.would have gone on to great heights but who knows?.anyway its nice to hear your comments we share a passion for sure.i too am a fan of Jarrett McCoy basie bud powell hamp hawes and ive got to mention our own vic Feldman among many others.keep swinging Rich.music IS life.

      exjazzbass baz Dear EJB,
When I first 'came across' Bill Evans' music, because I spend most of most days with RUclips tracks going in the background, I entered a FEW of hist full albums in my personal 'favorites' list. As I came across Bill Evans' albums that are New to me, I captured and saved the Hyperlinks to play his music easily, I realised that I had NOT come across EVEN ONE Bill Evans album that I DIDN'T like!
So, I've ended up adding EVERY Evans' album I came across, then got SERIOUS about my Bill Evans RUclips music collection: I've printed his Discography so I can both put my Saved Albums in chronological order, AND see if there are ANY I've missed.
I would say that Bill Evans has become one of my FAVOURITE jazz artists, a 'mere' 40 years after I first became a jazz aficionado! I also find him a 'Man For All Seasons,' or at least all moods. For example, I started listening to Consecrations this early, early morning here in Australia: Great playing, (as has been 100$ true of ALL my Evans familiarisations!) but too much energy for this time of day. No problem, I've just switched to the mellow masterpiece Moon Beams; I'll listen to Consecrations later, say this afternoon.
I've been impressed by the wide range of styles he displays, as well as how much ahead of his time he was. Not that my jazz idols are youngsters anymore, but Evans was a generation prior, and way too young when he left just. I find myself thinking as i listen to his many records, "Oh, that's where ...learned that particular style/riff/whatever."
His Discography has 3 pages of Albums from 1956 to 1980. Hard to imagine what the next 20-30 years might have produced if he had lived ONLY his Biblical years "threescore years and ten; and if by reason of [genius]...fourscore years," never mind the life expectancy from the 20th century1

Evans style was more modern classical. He played a jazz format at times.

    • @Al97511
      @Al97511 6 лет назад +4

A long way from "modern classical", even though he was originally strongly influenced by Debussy, Ravel and others. His harmonies and rhythmic emphasis were very much based on jazz idiom.

This is beautiful. I've always had a crush on Scott La Faro and Paul Motian combo, but this sounds great too.
    Bill was an absolute master.

I agree, I always believed how could you get better. But Bill's playing really grew in the mid to late 70s. His playing later with Marc Johnson for me surpasses LaFaro/Motian era. More moving. Not saying better, but richer. Check out Keystone Corner if you don't know it and Paris Concert One and Two. (Sorry, not being a know it all, but just finished How My Heart Sings book and Time Remembered doc on him, and have been listening to nothing but Bill on spotify, CD/LP, and many live youtube videos my heart is so full, ha!)

What are the names of the Earl Zindars tunes that Evans recorded ? They were part of the early & mid 70's repertoire with the Gomez / Morrell trio. I remember being intrigued by the compositions of Zindars, andam still curious.
