You would double tap the block, you can do that once per fight. Otherwise it activates automatically after sp2 (also the best way to bait out the computers special is after sp2)
I've found a few that works for me. Usually I try to get the opponent close to a bar then hit into their block to start. After each 5 hits back off and see if the computer with throw a special if not run back in. If they start attacking and you can't intercept use your pod to hold your combo. Then continue to get to 40 to get a fury. If you lose your combo and go into cool down run to sp3 it gives you a fury as well after the sp3. In shorter fights they usually don't last that long after gaining one fury at a rank 5 max sig. Other one I saw was go up to sp2 then use that to enter or hit into the block at that point you can use a special or pod if the AI attacks and you miss intercept.

Does he need awakening?
Nope he doesn't awaken just gives him healing in the pod and a chance to stun if they hit into it with regular hits
