- -This video will show you step-by-step how to sew a pocket with a zipper into a bag/tote/purse liner.
The written instructions are as follows:
-Iron interfacing to the back of your lining
-Cut a pocket 9" x 12"
-Fold the lining piece in half wrong side together and finger press a crease for the center from top to bottom of the lining
-Draw a vertical line down 6-8" from the top on the center line
-Starting at the top of the lining, place your ruler on the two inch mark and draw a line, 8" - 10" long
-Move the ruler down 1/4" and draw another line
-Move the ruler down again 1/4" and draw the third line
-Put the ruler on the center line and measure out 3.5" to the left and right of the center line and draw a line inside the 3 lines you drew to "close the box"
-Draw a triangle from the lines you just drew at each end facing with the point inward
-Fold the pocket in half via the long edge and finger press a crease in the center
-Place the pocket fabric right side up on the cutting mat
-Place the lining right side down onto the pocket, leaving 1/4" of the pocket showing above the lining piece
-Pin the 4 corners of pocket to ensure you don't accidentally cut or sew the sides of the pocket during the next steps
-Carefully sew around the box, backstitching at start and stop
-With a rotary cutter or scissors, cut the center line, just from the points of the triangles. Don't cut all the way through the triangles
-With thin, pointy scissors, cut the sides of the triangles to the edge of the stitching careful not to cut into the stitching
-Take the pins out
-Pull the pocket fabric through to the interfacing side and smooth as much as possible
-At the iron, press the long edges first. If there are creases showing on the right side of the lining, you may have to snip a stitch or two at the triangles
-Work the pocket and lining fabric until they are smooth. The lining side is more important to have flat, and no puckers showing
-Put the 4 pins back into the corners of the pocket, catching the lining fabric
-Get 1/4" fusible tape
-TURN SO THE POCKET SIDE IS FACING UP
-Put the tape on the long edges of the pocket fabric and press into place
-Remove the paper tape covering
-Make sure your zipper is at least 2 inches wider than the zipper opening
-Place the zipper on the ironing board, right side up
-Place the pocket side down onto the zipper
-Line up your zipper onto the fusible tape until it looks good to you
-Gently press the iron onto the lining to adhere the tape to the zipper
-Take your lining to the sewing machine
-Use coordinating thread to match the lining fabric
-Using the zipper foot, or the foot you're most comfortable with, starting one inch from the end on a long side, sew as close to the lining edge fabric without going onto the zipper fabric
-When you get to the short side, take a back stitch, or use a lock stitch, and turn to sew the short side, also do this at the bottom of the short side. Sew all around the zipper
-Turn the piece pocket side up, bring the bottom and top of the pocket right sides together and sew 1/4" seam allowance along the top
-Let the pocket naturally hang down, the seam you just sewed will be 2-3" below the top of the lining
-Bend in the sides of the lining and sew the side seams 1/4" seam allowance, being sure you don't sew the lining to the pocket
-Turn the lining to view the zipper from the front and admire your work!
-Your zippered pocket is done! GREAT JOB!!
