Well, that's probably a healthy thing. These bases require a lot of time, and if you're not a full time youtuber, you should probably be spending more time irl, nature, and the like.
@tbbt1215 because they use Axiom on the server. Learning in singleplayer is fine, but not being able to use it in multiplayer would prevent it from being as useful.
I mean, if you're being inspired by Zelda, you could always go with a floating island for your observatory. Maybe with waterfalls streaming down into the lake to tie it into the landscape.
He said he was specifically inspired by Majoras Mask. I do wonder if he has played totk or ss, and what he thinks of them. Probably best to not know though, considering how polarising those games are 😅
Reminds me of how much video games can affect people. It hits me deep since I'm trying to become a game dev, like something i couldn't explain when playing games as a kid got voiced
The trap doors you're using for walls in the sniffer room are the problem, mobs think they can pathfind through closed trap doors. That's why all the horses in Bdub's stable last season were all smashing their faces against the trap door walls
@tomhillton4299 Shouldn't be - trapdoors are a special case for pathfinding. Treated as both air mobs can path through, and solid ground, even when flapped down.
@tomhillton4299I made a room of shelves to house villagers and it seems to mess up their pathfinding quite a bit to the point they just get stuck in a corner. Not sure if the same problem but certainly annoying.
Hearing Grian talk about Majoras Mask was very fun and honestly I wish he would talk about other video games he's interested in that aren't Minecraft more often
He likely has some Pokemon knowledge, given the fact that he was playing Pokemon while waiting for the other Bad Boys to give Grian the signal to be teleported to Skynet.
22:48 amazing sequence of events > Donkey escapes > steps on pressure plate > places plate on door again > steps on it > trapdoor activates and destroys plate again > rides donkey > phases through wall All in 10 seconds- I love minecraft
Sniffers need at least 21 blocks of diggable terrain. I don't think there's enough mud in their tiny pen (the path block and mangrove logs don't count!). 21 because they remember the last 20 places they dug and won't dig there again until they forget.
And they look an entire block below them which means that they cant see the mud, so even tho they can usually dig through mud, they can't rn because of that mechanic (they can see the hoppers below). A way of getting around this is to place a couple of blocks of dirt or other diggable blocks at less than a sniffer length apart. That way, their hitbox remains on the higher blocks, and they are able to dig through the mud. It might cause small loot losses, but it shouldn't be too much of an issue. (Sorry for any grammar mistakes)
@sandrajonsson17when you say they look an entire block below them do you mean they look past the mud because it specifically is less than a full block tall? I just went for moss and a hopper minecart for my own sniffers, so this mud thing is new to me
@nhooj8882 from what I am aware of your right about the 21 blocks thing but you do actually need an entire layers of mud or dirt blocks underneath them for them do do their thing
Zoned out. Came back at 15:16. Completely forgot what I was watching and was VERY into grians new video essay until those 4 words in that order reset my brain and I remembered this was hermitcraft. Anyway Grian if you enjoyed making that segment I'd watch more
Adhd be like lol. I got distracted mid video and went to read my comic, then returned 3 hrs later when I was distracted from the game i was playing after getting distracted reading my comic to come back here
2:39 you spent last season fishing and building wheat fields and were wildly successful. You can literally entertain us with nothing. Do you really need to compare yourself? Your storytelling and ability to bring us into your world are unparalleled.
The Watchers originated with Evo SMP. To keep the story short, the first time the server went to fight the Enderdragon was also the last episode of Grian's Evo series. He ended it with a modified version of the End poem, where the voices implied that he joined said voiced as Watchers -- which in Evo lore had interacted somewhat ominously with the players before. Fans absolutely took that and ran with it but the actual Evo people (BigB, Martyn, Jimmy, Pearl, among others) don't mention it very often so people get very excited when they do allude to it.
"dont want people thinking im a watcher"👀 edit-for all the people asking for context, this is about some lore in evo smp and hinted at lore in the life series where "the watchers" are the ones putting the players through the death games. because grian is in charge of the life series many fans like to joke that hes a watcher as well
Your sniffers don't see the trap doors, but they do stop on them. They are literally pathing to *any* block through that wall because they don't see it as a wall. It's the same reason BDubs horses would just jump at the walls all day; they didn't know it was a wall, so they tried to walk through it and it ends up making them behave weirdly. My suggestion: use shelves for the wall instead.
Put up a fence/wall on the side where the sniffers are and trap doors on the other side--if he really wants that look with the trap doors. A fence or wall should stop them from trying to pathfind out of the area.
1:57 "I don't want ppl thinking I'm a watcher." I understood that reference Mr Grian. You are so a watcher from the Evo SMP & Life Series [Martyn's POV only].
I can't believe it's already been 3 Months since the beginning of Season 11. However seeing as everyone is starting their mega base recently, this is a good send off to the starter base

Hey Grian, I don’t know if you’ll ever read this but I really appreciate how you shared your thought process in a very vulnerable and honest way. I was NOT expecting that sudden transition to a 2 minute snippet of a 1.5 hour long video essay about how majoras mask changed gameing as a whole. I have never seen editing this advanced in a Grian video since you played roblox.
I just wanna say that I absolutely LOVED the segment about the inspiration for your base! Subconscious inspiration is definitely the most interesting kind of inspiration, especially because it usually comes from something close to the heart of the artist. It's even got me thinking about styles that I like and how it connects to my own childhood obsessions. It's obvious now that I think about it, but I never considered how much it affected me before.
@stay_safe_eat_cake3595 The electrical engineer -- who is slightly older than I am -- is a creative genius and Minecrafter. He raved about them during our occasional SMP playdates.
from what i've tested, 23:00 seems to be caused by jumping into a trapdoor directly under a waterlogged trapdoor while moving forward on a mount. it seems that your hitbox clips through the ceiling into the water, kicking you off the mount, and the forward velocity causes the player to actually clip all the way through to the other side of the ceiling. it's pretty easy to replicate so it could make for a cool hidden entrance

Whenever there's a shot overlooking the map, I always like to pause and sort of take stock of all the bases i can see. I point out who is who and enjoy seeing them relative to other people's areas. When I pointed out Tango's I even noted that he's a monster this season, more so than usual. He's moving like a final boss. The so see Grian pour so much appreciation into Tango was so wholesome. This is one of my favorite parts of Hermitcraft. -In more Tango appreciation, to have a base so large that its almost a chore to load it all in is impressive. But to also have that space be interesting and detailed is nothing short of incredible.
Grian have you ever heard of liquid-mirror telescopes? They're used instead of the big long lense telescopes you typically see. It's basically a big rotating pool of liquid mercury or gallium to create a slight concave shape. In the past they'd also use big puddles of water for stargazing too. They're very precise, but their big drawback is they use gravity, so they can only see what's directly above them. If you don't want to build a big jutting mountain, maybe try that. You could use buildstone to make it appear like its rotating.
Fun fact, they use a twist on that to make the super big mirrors for other telescope, they pour molten glass into a mould that's mostly flat and slowly spin it, this makes the glass smooth out, and then they let it cool. Once it's cooled they coat it in a tiny layer of a metal(for expensive mirrors it's usually silver or aluminium), spin it to smooth it out, and then let it settle as it cools. The end result is a near perfect curved lense of whatever size they want. The hubble space telescope main mirror was a 2.4m mirror made using this exact process but the aluminium cooled too quickly(causing the centre of the mirror to not quite smooth out completely), the end result was them having to polish it to fix the distortion once it was in space and they noticed the nanometer sized issue.
Me when I've just died and come back to life for the 16th time (War doctor + 10's lil regeneration back into himself.) but these teeth are rather familiar
Perhaps consider placing the observatory on the opposite side of your island. That way the cave leading out to the island can follow a path across the island and then up to where the observatory will be located.
Me: I just finished my 5x5 dirt house for my starter base! I am so proud. Grian: yeah I just finished my Victorian style greenhouse/underground bunker with a trading hall, farms, water connection and a nuke in the middle of it. I am proud of my STARTER base
Thank you for sharing your story about Majora’s mask and the Astral Observatory Grian. It’s really sweet to hear where your inspirations come from and also the emotional aspects of your build!! Hearing you talk about wanting to evoke similar emotions in the art you make is really inspiring
@munchingdragon6 The Watcher lore originally came from Evo SMP, Grian's SMP from several years ago, but Martyn Littlewood and many of the fans incorporate it into Life Series lore. There are also references made officially in the Life Series, like the Watcher symbol at spawn in Past Life and on the Secret Keeper in Secret Life.
17:11 “that’s my long-winded way of saying don’t grow up so fast.” i’m like actually sobbing. I’ve been watching this channel for as long as i can remember. recreating a tutorial on minecraft pe at age eight on the floor of my bedroom. i’ve always been fond of creating things and sharing emotions through art. i’m leaving to go to college for an art degree next fall. YOU have been the child like wonder i experienced as a kid. i hope i never grow too old to appreciate minecraft and the magic it brings. i like to think that your channel and minecraft as a whole has influenced me to become the person i am today. thank you for your wonderful magical builds that make me awestruck every season, and for lots and lots of laughs and days made better along the way!!
Oooo good luck with your art degree!!! I've got a similar experience in that I've been watching Minecraft videos since I was 10 & Grian since before Evo, and it's really shaped who I am today - especially the creativity Minecraft can bring out in people! I'm also currently in my last year of an illustration degree - man how time flies =D
this ! Grian really is the source of my child like wonder, although I’m not an adult (nearly there 😂) but there’s so much pressure on children to grow up quickly nowadays. G (and other hermits ) really keep us grounded to our inner child !
I spit out my cereal when I heard him say “i dont want anybody thinking im a watcher.” Genuinely think i squealed in my bed for 5 minutes. Im not normal rn.
@xgrubby1276The watchers are these eldritch beings that are stronger than gods. They were first depicted in Evolution SMP and at the end of it, grian became a watcher. According to Martyns life series lore, Grians a runaway watcher and he inserted himself into the games so the other watchers can't torment his friends as much for 'food' as they feed on emotions (obviously they still get tormented, but if G wasn't there it would be a lot worse)
I am actually SO excited to see what you envision as a whimsical observatory, I genuinely think this concept is like my favorite thing ever, there’s this game called Outer Wilds that has a museum observatory and similarly it gives the player just a rest from the crazy puzzling world, you can sit back and look at all the silly little game features and rest in this cozy wooden backyard camping vibe observatory
Yeeees Outer Wilds is my favorite video game!! In fact, my favorite art piece ever. Outer Wilds got me interested about storytelling again. A really important game for me.
18:08 the bottom of a mountain would work well for a radio observatory (think green bank or arecibo) which benefit from being in valleys because the mountains help protect the telescope from radio frequency interference.
he's probably not only thinking of an optical telescope, but is unaware there are any other kinds. There's an exasperatingly long but only mildly scolding Angela Collier video on folk's ignorance on the topic.
Grians reason for basing this season off of the astral observatory is so beautiful, it’s always been one of my favourite parts of Majoras Mask and I’m so happy to see how it ends up looking!!
17:07 That little spiel was so unexpected but a nice little dose of nostalgia. Funny you should mention not growing up too fast when you are the person I have looked up to for the longest and I literally grew up watching you. Happy you're still having fun and I hope that never changes.
Maybe you could try and emulate the vibe of the dark spooky sewer before the observatory by having your tunnel run under the lake, and then up through the mountain, into your observatory! "Not knowing" where you're going while walking through dark tunnels, only to end up in this otherworldly, magical place, is where a lot of that magic comes from.
I would 100% watch a Zelda video essay on the second channel. I have zero connection to the series, but the way it was described was innately captivating.
Can't believe I'm this early...looked over to "two much grian" and wondered "hmmm...when is this dude gonna upload on main channel" and voila, here it is!
At 9:30 the type of rock formation you were describing for your mega base seems to me to be a "Dike" tall, steep, darker rock (basalt), it might even make some geologic sense for the location. Maybe.

So real

especially Scar... mans base is currently pretty big... could he possibly be the moon?
Well, that's probably a healthy thing. These bases require a lot of time, and if you're not a full time youtuber, you should probably be spending more time irl, nature, and the like.
1:50 "I dont want people to think Im a watcher" said suspiciously watcher looking fella
Yes
The reference is killing me
the way i closed my eyes HE KNOWS WHAT HES DOING
@maximumwitchnight6708 the man is toying with us 😂
@Art3mis200rain world watcher?
I totally want to see a “Grian learns Axiom” video
Me 2
I'll also throw my backing behind this, mostly cause if he does that, I might be able to learn it at the same time 😅
It might not happen... Axiom recently pushed out an update which prohibits use on multiplayer worlds/servers unless you pay a fee for it
@htcmodcraft8944Why does he have to learn on a Multiplayer world?
@tbbt1215 because they use Axiom on the server. Learning in singleplayer is fine, but not being able to use it in multiplayer would prevent it from being as useful.
15:12 "Link? is the moon big?"
500th like 🎉
(link as in grain's old skin)
Hehe
I love how this can be a joke about majors mask and about grians old skin
Moon big.
I mean, if you're being inspired by Zelda, you could always go with a floating island for your observatory. Maybe with waterfalls streaming down into the lake to tie it into the landscape.
Also reminiscent of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom’s Zora’s domain, cleaned form.
Ahh a more skyward sword approach. I can even see the exact lake you're talking about in my head
That would be so epic!!
Huge suggestion
He said he was specifically inspired by Majoras Mask. I do wonder if he has played totk or ss, and what he thinks of them. Probably best to not know though, considering how polarising those games are 😅
A 2 minute majoras mask explanation in a hermitcraft episode has just made my day

The trap doors you're using for walls in the sniffer room are the problem, mobs think they can pathfind through closed trap doors. That's why all the horses in Bdub's stable last season were all smashing their faces against the trap door walls
He put blocks in front of the trapdoors but they still were attempting to walk out in that direction
@ValkKittyYT they glitch out when in the block the trapdoor is in
I wonder if it’s the same with shelves
@tomhillton4299 Shouldn't be - trapdoors are a special case for pathfinding. Treated as both air mobs can path through, and solid ground, even when flapped down.
@tomhillton4299I made a room of shelves to house villagers and it seems to mess up their pathfinding quite a bit to the point they just get stuck in a corner. Not sure if the same problem but certainly annoying.
That is a PERFECT place for a huge tree stump with an observatory on top
Yes! Either a massive tree or a spike of meteorite, just something that looks like it landed there rather than an oddly steep spit of natural terrain.
@Daspletophysis a meteor-obelisk type thing was my exact thought
Or, didn't they escape the moon in a ship? Crash the ship there and build the observatory on it just in case the moon comes back
hear me out, how about a obserbatory with a tree on top or a big observatory that had a massive tree growing through
Petrified tree stump
I still forget that this is Grians starter base...
16:00 Grian has the perfect voice for a video game documentary style channel
Oh absolutely
We didn’t know he was so good at it as he had never done one before but here we can see that yeah he really Is

@nhooj8882 from what I am aware of your right about the 21 blocks thing but you do actually need an entire layers of mud or dirt blocks underneath them for them do do their thing
And they will try to path find through trap doors. So a different method of a gate will be needed.

he SO does this deliberately man, it's both so funny and SO FUELLING IN TERMS OF HCS 😂

I gasped I won't lie
I think the watcher lore will return if he plans to retire
Your sniffers don't see the trap doors, but they do stop on them. They are literally pathing to *any* block through that wall because they don't see it as a wall. shelves have the same (not a block) thing for pathfinding as trapdoors
Put up a fence/wall on the side where the sniffers are and trap doors on the other side--if he really wants that look with the trap doors. A fence or wall should stop them from trying to pathfind out of the area.

The way the already HUGE decked out castle looks so TINY in comparison to the mountain is already insane. Truly a madman of the finest variety, tango
Have to remember he's working to a deadline, has to be finished *and* played before the end of the season, and that won't go on forever
i love how everyone is just talking about tango’s mountain in their episodes
🎵it’s a mercury fountain🎵
The majoras mask section was so sweet 😭
1:51 "I don't want people thinking I'm a watcher"
Yep
And then showing a clip with Link in it
Watcher
The lore implications
👀👀👀👀
14:07 I hope he see’s this and doesn’t scream…but one of the terracotta blocks is not facing inward. And I can’t tell if thats on purpose or not
I noticed that aswell! Wouldnt be surprised for either tbh
I was just about to comment this lool
I noticed that too!
NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
It’s pissing me off so much
22:55 doctor who vibes over here hello
Lollllll you’re right
CAME HERE TO COMMENT THIS EXACTLY 😂
Me when I've just died and come back to life for the 16th time (War doctor + 10's lil regeneration back into himself.) but these teeth are rather familiar
This is java not bedrock, that's not supposed to happen
I can’t unhear it lol
Perhaps consider placing the observatory on the opposite side of your island. That way the cave leading out to the island can follow a path across the island and then up to where the observatory will be located.
Me: I just finished my 5x5 dirt house for my starter base! I am so proud.
Grian: yeah I just finished my Victorian style greenhouse/underground bunker with a trading hall, farms, water connection and a nuke in the middle of it. I am proud of my STARTER base
Everyone's talking about the possible life series lore mannnnn I'm just excited about majora's mask being mentioned in such detail
nah fr i got surprised when i saw it got mentioned
Thank you for sharing your story about Majora’s mask and the Astral Observatory Grian. It’s really sweet to hear where your inspirations come from and also the emotional aspects of your build!! Hearing you talk about wanting to evoke similar emotions in the art you make is really inspiring
The thing with Tangos base is you only see what's above the surface. Theres a whole other monster of work underground!
... There's MORE ?!
No cause I screamed when he said legend of Zelda. Those games were literally one of the best thing that I’ve ever found.
He talls about it quite a bit, idk if you've seen the repo streams, the modded ones more specifically, but he loves zelda.
SAME! Especially the fact that it was Majora’s, because I grew up watching my dad play that :D
16:30 the amount of nostalgia this gave me even though ive never played the game is insane
legitimately, same.
anemoia, my friend; nostalgia of a place or time you didn’t live in.
"I don't want people thinking I'm a watcher" TO LATE GRIAN TOOOOOO LATE!!
You don't want people to think you're a WHAT, Grian?
How subtle…
1:55 He said that deliberately. I'm betting on that.
this is a reference to the supposed life series lore, right?
@munchingdragon6 The Watcher lore originally came from Evo SMP, Grian's SMP from several years ago, but Martyn Littlewood and many of the fans incorporate it into Life Series lore. There are also references made officially in the Life Series, like the Watcher symbol at spawn in Past Life and on the Secret Keeper in Secret Life.
@rustythewolf1009 ohh okay, thanks for the clarification
canonically grian, you are a watcher so I will repeat myself, WATCHER🫵
I didn't play Minecraft for a month or so. Grian's video comes up and I suddenly wanna play Minecraft again.
17:11 “that’s my long-winded way of saying don’t grow up so fast.”
i’m like actually sobbing.
💛💛💛
Oooo good luck with your art degree!!!
I've got a similar experience in that I've been watching Minecraft videos since I was 10 & Grian since before Evo, and it's really shaped who I am today - especially the creativity Minecraft can bring out in people! I'm also currently in my last year of an illustration degree - man how time flies =D
@GwynnDduawe thank you so much! this community is always so inspiring:))
this ! Grian really is the source of my child like wonder, although I’m not an adult (nearly there 😂) but there’s so much pressure on children to grow up quickly nowadays. G (and other hermits ) really keep us grounded to our inner child !
NOT HIM SAYING "i dont want people thinking im a watcher.." I ACTUALLY SKIPPED BACK AND PUT SUBTITLES ON NOT KNOWING IF I HEARD THAT RIGHT
After that kind of explanation, i wanna see Grian's minecraft skin wearing Link's hat and tunic next video.
26:00 its just the trapdoors, mobs see them as both air and ground for pathfinding, and so they think they can walk thru it
'Dont want people to think im a watcher' The flashbacks!
surely he’s aware
the intro gave me extreme anxiety that he'd blow up the end crystals
Aww he remembered the playlist ♥️
I spit out my cereal when I heard him say “i dont want anybody thinking im a watcher.” Genuinely think i squealed in my bed for 5 minutes. Im not normal rn.
"I don't want people thinking I'm a watcher" in the big 2026 is insaneee (love that)
He’s caught on
What's he referencing?
@xgrubby1276Evo
@xgrubby1276the life series
New favorite sound bite 7:30
“YeeeeeEEEEESSSSS EGG!”
Thats so sappy and I love it it made me think about my life and my builds im only 14 and this almost made me cry
Outer Wilds mentioned! Yes! ::)
Love that game so much, though my vorarephobia was NOT impressed 😅
Yeeees Outer Wilds is my favorite video game!! In fact, my favorite art piece ever. Outer Wilds got me interested about storytelling again. A really important game for me.
25:20 Once again, you find faces in things you shouldn’t…
18:08 the bottom of a mountain would work well for a radio observatory (think green bank or arecibo) which benefit from being in valleys because the mountains help protect the telescope from radio frequency interference.
he's probably not only thinking of an optical telescope, but is unaware there are any other kinds. There's an exasperatingly long but only mildly scolding Angela Collier video on folk's ignorance on the topic.
mid video aside to talk about inspiration and all that b roll with the VO was totally unexpected, i loved it. very cool
1:54 "I don't want people thinking I'm a Watcher"? 👀
I SWEAR he has to know what he's doing
He HAS to know
This *had* to have been deliberate
Hm…
No way he just went out and said that 😂
“I don’t want people thinking I’m a watcher!” A little too late for that buddy…
We know.
21:02 Perfectly camouflaged I see nothing out of the ordinary
Did anyone else notice the glazed terracotta that was facing the wrong way 13:30
I was about to comment on it too.
This needs more attention
I would 100% watch a Zelda video essay on the second channel. I have zero connection to the series, but the way it was described was innately captivating.
"I don't want people thinking I am a watcher" He knows...
Are you still watching?
@HazeltheLemonQueenHe was only ever meant to watch, after all 👀
21:55 the cake ladder blocked by the sniffer's cake
Can't believe I'm this early...looked over to "two much grian" and wondered "hmmm...when is this dude gonna upload on main channel" and voila, here it is!
“I don’t want people thinking I’m a watcher” *says the suspiciously watcher shaped Grian*
Episode 11: MY ROOF HAS GOTTEN BLOWN UP.
0:10 I’m so glad Grian posted, it’s been so long 🥀
Yeah.
Bro I’ve beeen waiting I thought he’d post when gem did
Yes
He be posting dnd vids tho
Fnaf reference?
19:44 make it floating!!! Like an island
Exactly, perhaps make the observatory on top of a floating moon or space rock of some sorts, making another link to Zelda.
an island in the sky?
@Crystalelements182epic the musical reference???
But that removes the point of building on an island!
@Sinoceratops317he could take the island, and put it up there
brining back the traditional mega base hermit craft and grian was famous for
1:57 “I don’t want people thinking I’m a watcher” WE ALREADY DO
At 9:30 the type of rock formation you were describing for your mega base seems to me to be a "Dike" tall, steep, darker rock (basalt), it might even make some geologic sense for the location. Maybe.
