- Let's travel back to 1999 and fire up Star Trek Birth of the Federation. This is genuinly one of the most underrated Star Trek games of all time!
In this video I give an overview of what the game is like to play and show the features it has.
My tips to anyone new to the game: 1) For the UFP: Research and diplomacy! Wait until the populations explode for the minor species and bribe them into joining the Federation. And then convert all their workforce to building their special structure and research. Once you reach Tech Level 9 and get Galaxy X, Sovereign and Defiant Class ships it is over for the others. The Defiant is the most ludicrously powerful and fast ships (four sectors per term!) 2) Ferengi: Extra trade routes and buy a fleet. Bribe the Andorians or Zakdorn into joining and train your fleets at their war academies. 3) Klingon: Pick a weak faction to attack and keep doing it at a low level to train your crews. Use the Kvort Class as it is powerful, cloaks and can move three sectors per turn. 4) Romulans: You only really need to build a fleet of two ship types: Warbirds and destroyers. Use the Tal Shiar to steal secrets and funds and slowly build up your fleet. The Cloak gives you an unassailable tactical advantage if you establish solid strategic ground. 5) Cardassians. The Obsidian Order is everything. Judiciously conquer species to bolster intelligence, military proficiency and economy. If you can overcome economic weakness you are doing well. Use the Obsidian Order to steal as many Romulan ships as possible to create squadrons of ships that can cloak and use them to wreak havoc behind enemy lines attacking outposts, convoys and raiding systems. Build up a giant fleet of Galors and train them for 100 turns to legendary and brute force crush everyone.
And remember, once you end up in a major war, fortify your systems with dozens of orbital weapons platforms, planetary shields and bunkers!
it was always very annoying having to build up and upgrade all your planets after a new tech
Small Tip with the Klingons: As soon as you have the research done that unlocks the MK2 Scout (smaller Bird of Prey), build whole squads of them. Since the MK2 Scout is the only Klingon ship that can cloak, full squad hit and run tactics are effective against Federation, Ferengi and Cardassians to weaken their Fleet and destroy their outposts
Question about train crew, does multiple ships training at the same location reduce the experience per turn?
Eg 1 ship gets 200 Exp per turn, 2 ships get 100 Exp each per turn.
Even the statement "one of the most underrated Star Trek games of all times" is a huge understatement. That game is the best Star Trek themed strategy game of all time and it is a shame there never was an official Birth of the Federation 2. But there is a huge total conversion mod with that name
I loved the different interfaces between the UFP, Klingons, Romulans, Ferengi, etc.
I spent so many hours on this game. Got to play over network in the Physics lab over 20 years ago after work with my friend Paul, who played as Klingons. I was the Romulans of course! and was able to take out all his outposts and leave his fleet stranded in deep space with no where to go! Happy memories :D 😂
That would make a really enjoyable short film. Early 2000s lan games in the lab. Star Trek: LAN in the Labs.

Always regretted that is used only used races appearing in TNG.
Should have been possible to adapt at least some of the purely TOS ones (no Gorn 😭)
I loved this game so much. You could get so much money playing as Ferengi with all the extra trade routes and just buy ships outright. And just give money to bribe other factions to raise their opinion of you enough into joining or not attacking you. Still have my CD copy, haven't tried playing in on Windows 10/11 though.
This was one of my most favorite Star Trek games of all time! There were a couple of cool mods that allowed the Dominion to be in there and one that greatly increased the Borg presence. I'll never forget that one time I was at war with the Cardassians for nearly 100 turns. We were pretty much at a stalemate, but then suddenly the Cardassians wanted a non aggression treaty that quickly morphed into a full scale alliance request. I could not understand why they wanted that all of a sudden so I sent a couple of ships into their territory to see that they were getting MASSACARED by the Borg and they were quickly multiplying. I accepted their alliance proposal and began rapidly building up ships as I knew what was coming. Talk about some crazy Borg battles!!!
even after at least a decade i still remember EVERYTHING about this game 😅
- i loved to start with "Tech 1" and build up all the way
- there was a feature or bug = when you group a colony ship + Troop Transport you will Terraform everything in 1 round
- taking advantage of "Ramming" Maneuver to win early combats
- building a heavy industry system to build ships and scrapping for credits
...and sooo on i just LOVE BOTF

This was the most amazing game. I miss it! Would love to play it again. Crystalline entity used to obliterate me every hour or so 😢
nice still play this game got my original copy dvd from 1998
My CD was stolen 17 years ago but I still have the original packaging and game manual!
@@ransom182 did a copy of the original back in 98 the original copy as in shop brought seemed to develop hairline factures and at £47 at pop was quite expensive to keep replacing
I have two because I thought I lost my original but ended up finding it years later
Not only the best star trek game this is probably my favorite game of all time period. They are still modding it to try to modernize it as much as possible!
Still have it installed (with a lot of fanmade patches and it's running even more stable then 20 years ago) and still love it! There's not much to make the game better, maybe a bigger map, but the game is just a lot of fun.
You can edit map sizes for generation in simple text or install one of the mods/patchs doing that

This was one of my favourite games! Seeing Star Trek Infinite made me very nostalgic for BotF!! I think the Romulans were my favourite empire to play.
I had no idea any Deep Space Nine content existed in this game. Awesome. Also you probably know, but if you like this sort of game the New Horizons or the New Civilizations mods in Stellaris are great.
One thing I like about this game is that morale system pushes you into acting in character. Morale boosts the production of science, industry and intelligence or reduces if the morale on a planet is low. For example of the federation declaring war, bombing and invading lowers morale and making peaces rises it meanwhile the klingons love declaring war hate betrayal and are disappointed with peace
Still have this game, just need to buy an external dvd player. One of my all-time favourite games

I've been playing the ultimate dominion mod lately
I loved this game back in the day. I remember how upsetting it was when the Borg showed up and you weren't prepared; oops, there goes Vulcan, there goes Andor, there goes Earth...one thing I think I remember is that they didn't have the rights to TOS, just TNG, so they couldn't use some iconic ship models like the Constellation. Recently, I bought a new computer with no CD drive, so I guess I'll never play it again...
I was younger this was one of the Star Trek games I played on PC. Great fun spent hours playing.
There were some amazing mods to this game and was truly under rated. I really hope GOG picks this up and sells it digitally!

a few observations that can help: you didnt seem to realize you had more than 1 planet and didnt enter into the other systems to build anything in them.
to allocate power to power your various structures its not simply enough to build the energy reactors you also have to allocate the energy in the production tab of each system
Played a lot of star trek games growing up, but this one most of all
I remember when this game came out and how the publisher lost their shit when people started reporting bugs they got so mad that they literally tossed in the tall days after the game was released
The memory leak after turn 100 or 200.. even a great pc from the era would get bogged down. I played it on a pentium 233 and it would still bog down, even with plenty of memory.

I still play this, game, albeit the Dominion Mod. Amazing game. A good game can take weeks!
I put soooooo many hours into this game. MSN co-op plays was my first introduction to online PVP. Shame the engine is hard coded to only go so fast, the game grinds to a halt in the later stages.
Actually the Borg can be beaten 2 ways. The Romulans and the Klingons just need to bring about 2 Fleets of heavy cloaked ships. The other races need to bring the same amount of heavys and as many small craft as cannon fodder to distract the cube. But the most powerfull entity in the game is actually the Edo God
I remember getting the Edo to join the federation and then I built a starbase next to the Edo Guardian ... even the Borg would shiver in fear at that sight
Nice a video on birth of the federation, I still have my original BOTF CD, I wish they'd remake this game for modern systems its such a good strategy game. When Borg cubes turn up its either all over for where they spawn and the empire that they are attacking or you burly survive a fight with the cube, 40 star ships doesn't cut it not even close, try hundreds Well maybe with future tech but still its a hell of a fight, not to mention all the other random events that can happen during a game. Yeah I had many fun hours playing this. 😄
9 de-cloaking Romulan Warbirds usually does the trick.
@@crownprincesebastianjohano7069 My tech level must have been too low when I was engaging the Borg, it look a lot more than that for me to take down the cube.
This was one of my favorite games. Got it one summer with my grandparents, having left my 486dx4 100mhz at home. But I read that manual for weeks... then got it to actually run on aforementioned klingon computer Com-paq! Lol. Those 100+ turn times were insane.. 5-7 mins.
I played this game until I just could not find it anymore. Loved it.
Maybe it's a bit odd to say that, but IMHO, the one huge industry factor that prevented BOTF2 from ever getting made was Master of Orion 3 - as I'm bit of a sucker for the micro management grind, that one lured me away from BOTF for years, before I discovered all the mods 😅
Domination can still be achieved through making alliances; Just try to get every race to join you
If you know where to look, there are various mods out there, that vary wildly in what they focus on.
In some of them, you can build minor races' ships after they join you!
Yeah, setting things to level 5 skewed things for you. You have to first stop hemorrhaging credits, get more planets for your side, then build ships.
Thing is that you can play well, develop your side well and get smoked if one race gets the strategists to train their crews and they'll decimate you fast.

A nice work around for moneybis to build star ships in your other regions and then scrap them. You get the credits added to your balance.
i played the living s*** out of this game when it came out in 1999. great to see this again, the nostalgia is great.

Imagine this: Take BOTF, scrap the turn base, turn it into accelerated timeplay, but swap out the ship battles for Star Trek Armada 2 battleplay; with the whole thing on modern comp engines. Now THAT would be Glorious!

How do you get the game to run so smoothly? When I install the same mod at the similar resolution it lags a lot.

classic game. spent many an hour on this!
It was a great game limited only by its size and scope (although mods over the years have resolved that) and a AI that wasn't aggressive enough. It never built up it's own Empire that often although I have been attacked by huge fleets numbering over 150 before.
Oh and the turn 50 bug that slowed the games loading time between turns dramatically
this is a great game you can download it free and there are many mods available . i can play this for hours. i remember pestering my parents when it was about to be released

How do you get it to work so smoothly? I installed the exact same mod and it was very laggy for me.
You seem to have forgot that you can invade and conquer planets with troop transports, you then get a developed planet, but the inhabitants are pissed at you and in the federation everyone else in your empire is too.
I did! You're quite right. Only after the video it dawned on me. Much more efficient than bombarding a planet!

Federation AI definitely behaves as the Terran Empire. They'll ask for alliance and soon declare war, bombard systems, then start making territory claims in the face of being soundly beaten battle after battle.

@@SeanUCF i have. I'm writing for several gaming magazines. 4x and strategy is basically my greatest hobby and side job. Whats unclear? Botf is a classic 4x in moo2 style. (Well microprose made both) and infinite is a real time (tick based) grand strategy game (paradox basically made this genre) like stellaris (paradox) with 4x elements and missing depth (for beginners) There are plenty games there which are more similar to either one game and those 2 share very little similarities besides Trek IP (in the grand picture)

Install the patched version per launcher. Modern resolutions and no ctds.
Did you remember to save, exit and restart the program to fix the memory leak? 😳😅 Also, I HATE the ship combat system in this game. Clicking the wrong tactic can get your ships destroyed (I once pressed circle instead of assault). 😅. Star wars Supremacy had a better ship combat system
Still better than Star Wars Rebellion.
I have found if you use a fleet of atleast 50 ships planatary assault goes much faster.

@@IIISentorIII really the more ships the better. and you want them to be heavier ships. I have found the faster you get the bombing done the better it goes for you.

you havent adjusted the production levels.
You can use troop transports to take over a planet instead of bombarding them into extinction.
Star Trek Infinite looks good.
It's just Stellaris with Star Trek skins/ships. Just buy that game and get the Armada 3 mod for the same thing.
