  • Producing a serial dilution for a glucose calibration curve or in microbiology for bacterial growth. This is part of the required practicals for A-Level biology and a key skill for A-Level chemistry. This was filmed at the Kingston University STEM Outreach Centre.
The Kingston University STEM Outreach Centre provides a flexible state of the art space for schools, colleges and community groups to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Equipped with an interactive floor, a medical simulation robot, spectrometers and much, much more, we offer a range of activities from taster sessions to in-depth investigations.

The 'whole of the topic in … minutes' videos DO NOT comprehensively cover everything you need to know for your exams. It would be impossible to include 2 years of teaching in 1 hour. These should NOT be your only source of revision • Do the 'whole topic in... My exam predictions are just GUESSES!! I don't have any insider knowledge just years of looking at exam papers.

I've already completed this practical and completed an assignment on it, on my Level 3 BTEC biomedical science, but this video was still a useful recap!

hi how do i know how many times of transfering the solution into next volumetric flask should be done?

Hi! Can you tell me, how does serial dilution help estimate bacterial growth? You decrease the concentration gradually of bacteria, then you take the 5th decreased concentration and spread it on your agar? Is it, because serial dilution helps produce a smaller bacteria concentration, which means we can count it more easily and therefore make a better estimate of bacterial growth?
    Thankyou!!

In the last tube, do we remove 20 cm3 also to keep the volume the same or it is okay if we keep it the same?

    • @drsophietan4284

Hi, I saw your comment on this video in 2024. You won't need to remove 20cm3 in the last test tube, because you aim to make a solution with the correct concentration. Regardless, if you remove 20cm3 in the last test tube, the concentration would be the same anyway. I hope I understand your question correctly.

@@drsophietan4284 Yeahh!! I figured that out! I did my Official Exams in 2022, and the examiner asked me that question! Your answer was exactly the same as mine!! Our aim is the solution not the volume. So it doesn't really matter!
      Thank you!!
