Agreed. Even if radiation doses cumulate, you really have to factor in the length of time between exposure as well as the type of ionizing radiation, the body parts exposed, individual susceptibility to cancer, etc. While I've absorbed nearly 0.1 sieverts of X-ray radiation from eight CT scans and several 2D chest X-rays, most were separated by weeks or months, and it's not like they were blasting me with neutron radiation, beta rays, gamma rays, manta rays, Everybody Loves Rays, or a well-earned raise, it was just Vitamin X. There is some disagreement as to whether radiation doses are cumulative when it comes to the risks of exposure over multiple instances, especially with X-rays. There is probably some small degree of genetic damage from any X-ray exposure, and having two thoracic CT scans on the same day would definitely be a double dose, but if separated by some time, the original DNA damage could have possibly been repaired. Neutron radiation is way more destructive to genetic material than X-rays, so a millisievert of one may not equal a mS of the other. I've had eight CT scans of my thoracic since January of 2023, and even though my lungs were innocent bystanders they still have absorbed a lot and believe me I'm scared. But... the painful problem that they fixed (a burst fracture at T8 caused by osteomyelitis and an SEA), the relief I've gotten from it was honestly worth even a 50% chance of cancer, maybe even 100%. The pain was so bad (even with Q4 20mg oxycodone and Q2 4mg morphine) that I wasn't sure I wanted to stay alive anymore, so if cancer at age 70 is how I go, then that's how I'll go. No regrets. These scans are very dangerous. I guess making people sick is big business and all done in the name of healthcare. Wolf in sheep's clothing.
I had 2 abdominal CT scans within a few weeks from each other. I was seriously sick with gallstones back then but didn't know the dangers of radiation from CT scans. And my doctor who should have known better, ordered me to get a 2nd CT scan after I had recently gotten one at the hospital. What's worse is that neither CT scan was able to detect the gallstones. What detected my gallstones was a single abdominal ultrasound in Mexico (yes, I had to go to another country just to get an actual diagnosis). And now (years after my abdominal CT scans), I have another doctor that has ordered a head CT scan for me since I have symptoms of a brain tumor. And apparently from what I've heard, MRI's are better at detecting brain tumors (and also with less risks) than CT scans. Well I'm not going to get that CT scan done, I'm going to ask my doctor to change it to an MRI. *Note: My doctor had already known I had gotten 2 CT scans in the past few years.
Feel you I just got a head ct scan like 2 weeks ago and regret it as I feel it wasn't needed I was just paranoid and my anxiety won me over thinking I had a brain tumor
Dr. Eric Berg "Having just one CT scan is the equivelent to being exposed to 200 chest x-rays or 1500 dental x-rays. Ionized radiation causes damage to DNA. FDA says that up to and probably more than 30 to 50% of ct scans are determined to be unnecessary"
My doctor advised me to get a CAT scan of my heart to see what my coronary calcium score is, I think because I have high cholesterol. Do you think this is a good recommendation? Could an MRI or other test without radiation be a better option?
Age also needs to added to the equation due to the delayed onset of radiation induced cancer. CT in adolescents are more likely to result in cancer as their cells are proliferating at a faster rate, more years for potential onset and higher prevalence of igf-1.

The problem with CT scan anxiety is that it forgets how many lives CT also saves. The radiation in modern third generation CT scanners that are in most normal hospitals now is much lower than what was being dished out in the 80's for instance. If your doctor is at all worried about something that could be fatal if not found, then don't refuse the CT because of a 1 in 2000 lifetime risk, that's a lifetime risk and not a risk in a single year. Also remember, that the 1 in 2000 is calculated from different circumstances of dose, while most CT scans will give you less radiation than the dose that 1 in 2000 is calculated from. Remember your risk in the US of a car accident being your cause of death is 1 in 103, and how many are scared everytime they get in a car? You would need an absolutely insane amount of CT scans to get to a 1 in 103 risk too.

That was about 30 msv its a big dose but the risk of cancer from that is very small,to make yourself feel better a smoker get about 40msv to their lungs a year from smoking 2 packs a day, thats every year and you dont see them to care about it,your risk from the ct scan is very low about 1 in 450 exposed to that dose might get cancer but its not really proven under 100 msv so take care and dont stress about it,im a radiology technician in eastern europe we use a ct scan frim 2009 actually and weve been giving ct scans since the 80s ive seen children from accidents get 3 times your dose during the hospital stay
CT radiation is not a big concern . Don't worry about CT scan.Annual safe dose mentioned for radiology workers is 20 msv and for nuclear workers is 50 msv.So don't worry
This has been very timely for me. I need to have a CT scan and was somewhat alarmed about the radiation. I saw my chiropractor yesterday, had injured myself fainting and he said CT scans these days have far less radiation and that it would be equivalent amount of radiation of going on a short flight. Thanks so much for this most relevant information!
CT radiation dose is not equivalent to a short flight. A 7 hour flight is equivalent to approx. 0.02mSv. A chest x-ray is 0.1mSv. CT depends on the exam but ranges from approx. 1-30mSv. For context, average background radiation is approx. 2mSv per year but depends on where you live and some other factors.
@01Chris02 ct of the body is wayyy more the head is the least from 1-2msv that's like 7 months of background radiation x rays isn't nothing lil amount of radiation a flight is the same like a x ray or 2

The CT risk is small, lifetime risk is quoted as 1 in 2000 from a higher dose CT scan, most are much less than that level. It sounds like in your case the risk of not doing it would be much more important, so I wouldn't worry about the tiny risk from the CT that almost certainly won't impact you. @@rohn421 I would consult with your primary care doctor. Or was that who recommended it? I was supposed to have one, too, but I'm declining. It is supposed to be quick and painless, but you're still getting radiation. In my case, I'm going to consult with my doctor, so I canceled my appointment for the CT. I can always reschedule, no big deal. Regardless what my doctor says, it's still my decision..
@@M00159 it’s a 1,7 mSv .check it for yourself on radiology information. And actually this procedure can safe your life. Because if the doctor thinks you should check it then it means you are in risk group.
Most of the videos on CT scans either do not mention the radiation risk or greatly minimize the radiation risk.
It is an unnecessary risk.
Got cat with contrast of 15 msv for tromboembolia and 11 days after virtual colonoscopy for no reason( afraid how much in it).
it's a lot
I have breast cancer. I was scheduled for a CT scan. I told them no. My doctor told me there was no danger in it
Did you do it? Ask for a mri instead or ultrasound just had a head ct scan 2 weeks ago all this radiation is giving me crazy anxiety that never again in my life am I getting a ct scan
@@kevOzilla Yes I ended up doing the CT scan. Afterward I detox in the infared sauna
@mrsz1988 what's that how is that done? And did you just have 1 ct scan? It was a chest ct right?
Does 21 msv harmful cause cancer ??
How many phases is there in your CT scan

Wow great info thank you Dr Castello!
I've got chest pain shoulder pain wheezing unexplained weight loss had 2 ct scans and nothing shown up
Are you ok? Have you found out what's wrong?
i had a low dose ct of the chest without contrast in december.
fast foward to march i had a cta angiography with contrast(heart scan( in March, how dangerous are these levels in this time frame? should i be concerned
Don't bother asking that doctor. He doesn't give a fuck like all of em.
sir i am 22yrs unfortunately i got one CT scan contrast of appendix 1 year ago but reports was normal and appendix was not there but i am worried about might be ct scan cause cancer or impotence in future kindly sir guide me what should i do to detox my body from ct scan side effects
CT machines give off radiation. But so do Wi-Fi. ..5G technology, cell phones, cell phone towers, and antennas...
Hand-held lasers and laser pointers...
Tanning beds and lamps. ...
Smart meters...
Compact fluorescent lamps. ...
Microwave and your fridge in the kitchen. Flying on an aeroplane also your exposed to radiation. I've used a radiation testing machine on a CT scan and it's actually lower than your kitchen fridge mate
I've had a total of CT scans since 2007 I'm 36 years old. Will I be ok? Im upset because alot of doctors don't tell you the risk. 2 where for chest and 2 for abdomen.
did u watch the video?
kchilz32 I am also worried about my abdominal CT scan.
kchilz32 how are you doing now?
@@Cazanu417 what if the ct scanner is old and have a lot of Malfunctions is it bad to health I'm so worried
He's lying to you or is uneducated. An mri is much safer and does not exspose you to harmful ionizing radiation
Even if it is low dose, much more than a plane ride
CT radiation dose is not equivalent to a short flight. A 7 hour flight is equivalent to approx. 0.02mSv. A chest x-ray is 0.1mSv. CT depends on the exam but ranges from approx. 1-30mSv. For context, average background radiation is approx. 2mSv per year but depends on where you live and some other factors.
@01Chris02 ct of the body is wayyy more the head is the least from 1-2msv that's like 7 months of background radiation x rays isn't nothing lil amount of radiation a flight is the same like a x ray or 2
@@kevOzilla Apologies for my previous deleted response, I thought it was a different comment thread I was replying to.
You are saying the same thing I am saying in my original comment. Not sure if you are disagreeing with me or not? Or just backing it up?
As consumer reports said,30% of CT scans never should have been ordered
I dint know about this and the doctors just put my baby daughter in the cat scan with out leting us know why and with out signing any papers. Im goin to investigate more this is not right
O my God no. Baby's are severely sensitive to radiation. Must of been a life and death situation?
THOSE MONSTERS!😡 They put a baby in those radiation death chambers!! I am a 19 year old adult and got terrible radiation sickness from those things. Doctors who order CT scans are evil, they make so much money from those scans. Then once you get radiation sickness and say it was because of the scan they tell you it’s not because they don’t want to get sued
Tomorrow i have to do chest CT scan. Its my first scan, i'm 46 old. Is any risk !! I need quick answer.
No.

Great stuff thanks and also Iv learned if you are or might be pregnant do not get a CT scan
I feel like if your constantly repeating ct scans in a short window I think your going to die
Does ct scan risk for man to make a child?
Yes if your balls are exposed to ct radiation will reduced your healthy cells. You will produce less sperm and less healthy sperm. They won't tell you this of course and will lie.
if you want to become a parent don't do ct scans which could irradiate your reproductive organs
Dear sir,
This is important please answer me.
I recently did CT abdominal + pelvis with and Without contrast.
As per doctor he used 1413 Mgy-cm Radiation to me.
Means how much Msv Radiation i received exactly?
Please help me to get answer 😢
Thanks !!!
H B how are you doing now?
About 24 msv its a bigger dose but nothing to be worried about really
You literally had your insides exsposed to as much radiation as many Hiroshima survivors. I suffered from radiation poisoning after my ct scan. Literally burned my insides. Brutal agony. If you did not get sick after your ct scan consider yourself lucky and never get one again
They also have no way of accurately measuring how much radiation your body actually absorbed necause everyone has different sensitive to it. What is for sure is ionizing radiation kills cells or damages them which can compound into health problems down the rd. Going to the doctor these days is NOT safe
@@Cazanu417 XD liar
1 in 400... I call bullshit. its more like 1 in 4 or 1 in 40 at best.
Why do you say that?
@@Blaydin1995 cause its poison. Plain & simple. Otherwise go pour some in your coffee & protein shake everyday for 400 days straight & tell me about your cancer the following year.

I wish I was told that CTs had a risk like this. I was given one earlier today to try to check measurements of my aortic aneurysm and congenital heart defect and myopathy. But this has me freaked out! With my luck I’ll be the 20%! 😖
The risk from CT is greatest in children, and goes down with age, mainly as younger bodies are more affected by the radiation and have more time to develop cancer. I've had 2 CT's in my life already and I wouldn't worry about having a third one if a doctor advised it.
You have much more risk to die from your heart problem if left unchecked than to get cancer from that particular CT scan.
@@BrianMillsSkills Children have higher risk of CT scan induse cancer I am 17 year old so i will also at high risk or not
