Like okay, I guess good to know she’s entertaining people whose happiness had left them, but err..yeahhh. Sorry, just saw this VICE documentary once on some grey areas of being an idol, just hoping she didn’t stumble into that area..

It's same as how most of audience for male idols are middle age and younger women.
Also there is the fact that most of them are business men, there is that thing in Japan where business man pretty much spend most of their time/life at work and are tired of always seeing the same thing, people in dark costume, everyone speaking with politess formulation, always strict. So most of them to relax either go to Pachinko or to go watch cute idols concerts.
You also need to take at account that many of them are alone and have nothing else to do than working.
Oh and Vice was talking about Chikan Idol, the underground idols who don't go to the regular way into an agency, but by themselves in undergound area for underground idols of any sort. Hopefully with the rise of internet, most of newer idols now are using niconico or youtube, sns to promote themselves.

For Example: not "How did Purin's parents react you to be an idol", but rather "Purin, how did your parents react to you becoming an idol?". Or "What is A Japanese idol?"
