  • In this Friday episode, Patrick and Stuart continue their constant battle with nature at the chateau. The destructive ivy growing on their tower is invasive and actually rooted and growing from within the stone tower walls. They also meet up with friends at a local brocante (antique fair/flea market) and purchase a pair of beautiful headboards. There is also an update on Figaro, the kitten that they found and rescued when it was less than 4 weeks old.

get a saline solution IV drip bag, add several CC of Round Up and put the IV needle into the major (size) trunk of the Ivy ,wait one week for the IV bag to empty. The ivy will die and you have not contaminated the area. This is a systemic and will go to every point of the roots because of the saline in the IV drip quickly. I have a large number of trees with Ivy, grape vine and poison ivy on them for 30 years. This works with the least amount of environmental impact and effort. Good Luck my sympathy is with you, I have been through this.

Ivt, ivy, ivy. Our current fixer upper was covered in Ivy when we bought it. You could barely see the house. It took multiple weekends bribing friends with beer and food to tame it. In the end we had one big root that refused to die. My husband read that if you drive copper nails into the root (or in this case the stem), it will kill it. It worked for us, so you might want to try it. You eventually will need to take some stones out to find out where it is getting it's nourishment from...but you know that already! You have my sympathies with the heat. It was 102 this afternoon when I left work.

Only three ingredients are needed for an environmentally safe product that can be applied to English Ivy to eliminate it: Vinegar, Dish Soap, and Salt. For one batch of weed killer, you will need a gallon container of white vinegar, ¼ cup of dish soap, and two cups of Epsom or regular salt.
I hope this helps. You're both doing a phenomenal job much love from 🇨🇦❤️

    • @JourneytotheChateau
      @JourneytotheChateau  26 дней назад +2

Thank. As Patrick said, vinegar will destroy the limestone, so we need a different solution. Thanks!

    • @yolandagofigure
      @yolandagofigure 26 дней назад +1

@@JourneytotheChateau yes.. I saw that.. but I wonder if you can dilute it?.. I found this as well.
      Salt Solution Method
If you don't have any vinegar, you can create a salt solution to kill poison ivy. Mix one cup of salt with a tablespoon of dish soap and a gallon of water. Pour the salt solution into a spray bottle and spray it on poison ivy leaves and stems.
A thick tarp or heavy plastic sheeting can kill English ivy by blocking sunlight and depleting the energy stored in the roots. The main drawback to this method is that it's slow: it can take two years to fully wipe out the ivy's extensive root system.
Lemon juice does indeed kill ivy roots, but it will also kill surrounding plants if you're not careful.

Guys, the headboards look great. I love the fabric.
I'm happy to hear that your little kitten is progressing nicely. 👍
I hesitate to mention an obvious solution to your ivy problem, systemic herbicide. If you use responsibly, following the instructions, including wearing proper personal protection, there shouldn't be an issue of contamination. Unfortunately, here in Texas, it's actually still legal to sell ivy. It's definitely a non-native invasive species.
We also have some extremely aggressive vines with nasty thorns that spread in every direction under the ground. God has determined that if we insist on living in Texas, we're going to have to fight Nature to do so. Tornadoes, poisonous spiders, snakes and scorpions, alligators, bobcats, wolves, not to mention the heat, clearly it's a conspiracy of Nature to drive us out.
Thanks for bringing us along to the brocante. That's always fun.
    ❤ from TX!

Oh my that ivy! Wish I had a magic solution- well actually any solution, but I know nothing about getting rid of ivy! I know you’ll come up with an idea. I’m so glad you have a cat now. Living in any old building requires one - or two! I know all the years I lived in our old house, our three cats made sure we never once saw a mouse. In fact they ruled! Dogs only went where the cats allowed them to go, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Figaro becomes numero uno before too long. Those headboards are really lovely. The fabric is in such good condition. I don’t know how you manage to do all that work in the heat. Being Scottish, I’ve never acclimated to the Toronto humid summers. I think I hibernate more in the summer than I do in the winter months! Figaro is so sweet and looks healthy and happy. I’ve had long exhausting battles with ivy through the years and sometimes I thought about using a stick of dynamite but common sense got the better of me, so I didn’t go that route. Half my house blasted away was not the way to go. Brute force and the assistance of two strong sons removed the ivy. It’s a shame because ivy on stone walls looks pretty, but as you said, it grows into the stone. Whenever you go to a brocante I see many items I would buy and you always seem to find the jewel amongst everything else. Love the headboard!! Hugs to you both! ❤

I think it will go well introducing the dogs individually to Figgy. You guys already have the dogs' scent on you, and after time, they will all be buddies.
That darn Ivy is so invasive! That heat wasn't easy to work in.
The brocante was nice. I hope you didn't have to carry your bed headboards a long way!
You both look lovely. The mantle behind is beautiful with the items you have on it.
Patrick, any more canning before summer finishes?
Lots of love to you all.❤

Hi sweeties. The rute of Ivy is difficult to get rid of.
But it's so damaging for "old" walls. I hope you can kill the beast😛 Now that you have removed the weeds in the corner, you can see it's much larger than i thought. It would be perfect for a little table and chairs in the shade. You could see how a stretch the brocante was. It's not funny in the hot sun and no shade. Love the headboards. The blue is beautiful. Figaro is so cute. Have a great weekend. Hugs and kisses also for the furries and Figaro. 😘🥰🐕🐈

If you are able to put copper screws or nails into the roots it should discourage the regrowth of the ivy. it should shrivel in about a year. icluding what is inside the wall. it take several years for tree roots, but it does work. good luck

This is actually great weather for poisoning ivy. I would research what you can buy that is effective for ivy and instead of spraying the whole plant, I would paint it on where you have freshly cut the roots. 👍

I've never had an ivy problem myself, but I recall my father always saying that you have to leave about 30centimetres gap between the root and the stem when cutting it, because it can reattach itself. Apparently. I was just ten at the time and found that bit of information quite unsettling.

Can you get Ecoplugs - you drill a holeor holes in the root, hammer in the ecoplug and it delivers the poison to the root without harming anything else. Love the headboards, beautiful colour.❤

ivy is a 'sore' for all old buildings and there are few solutions other than pruning and cutting..as you point out.. limestone walls are fragile and the use of corrosive products is not admissible ..Patience is our only weapon against this ivy

Hi Patrick and Stuart. I was watching another ytube Chateau Citadell and wonder if the same thing Rob used to kill roots wood work on the ivy roots. He used boiling water salt and vinegar. Poured it down the root and covered then with a plastic bag. It took a couple of weeks to die. He also had problems with ivy roots in a wall. Not sure how he got rid of it. Maybe look them up ❤

Ivy bane of all gardeners. Keep at it and you will get there. Our new gardener attacked the roots and cleared a foot all round the base. It’s now brown and any bits I see growing I can bravely chop off. Not been the same since I saw a snake climbing up the wall. Figaro is looking like a chocolate box kitten, so snuggly. Well done with the bed heads they look stunning. How often does that happen, right size colour and such good quality👏👏👏. The very thing that gets you going to the next one. And the next 🤣🤣🤣🤞🤞👏👏❤️

Good luck with the ivy! Ha, you said you needed the big loppers… and you didn’t mean simply large. 😁♥️
I know what you mean about things growing so much now. Oh my gosh, with all the rain (we’ve had similar here), things are seriously growing so fast and HUGE! Hydrangea blooms as big as my head! And saplings are seriously taking off. (Other things are turning into mildewed mush. 😢) Great that you can use the fig elsewhere. I’m giving away pagoda dogwoods right and left, but the ash saplings - 5 feet (about 1.6 meters) in one year is a bit extreme!!!
Great bed ends, and gorgeous fabric.
Aww… Figaro is a total dear! ♥️♥️♥️ I’m so glad he’s happy to play with you, etc.

Patrick and Stuart, at my house in Florida I had to get rid of Brazilian Pepper - a most invasive plant and my method worked. Not immediately but within 2 or 3 months as I recall. Try it - what do you have to lose? Five minutes a day? Good luck and I do sympathize with you. I so wish I were younger. I’d be there in a flash!!!

Good for you tackling the ivy! It is pernicious. I like seeing these other areas of your chateau. The stairs, rounded wall and doors offer a lovely architectural vignette. I'm sure there are many other such scenes on your property. I enjoy seeing these picturesque little corners. And more figs - yum! I believe fig jam goes very well with any number of French cheeses ...
