    Yes, contrails, which are condensation trails formed by the water vapor emitted from aircraft engines, can indeed trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere. They are essentially human-made clouds that form when the hot water vapor from jet engines cools and condenses in the cold upper atmosphere¹.
    Contrails can contribute to both atmospheric warming and cooling. However, the warming effect is particularly notable for contrails that form at night or persist into the night. This is because the Earth undergoes radiative cooling at night, where heat radiates from the surface into space. Contrails can act like a thermal blanket, trapping this heat and thus contributing to warming².
    The overall warming effect of contrails is still considered small, but it is a subject of ongoing research and environmental concern, especially as air traffic continues to increase⁴.

    Interesting concept. Generally planes, choose to fly at a higher altitude for multiple reasons, including better fuel economy, less weather and faster speeds. Any model to try to determine would need to balance the fuel economy and increase speed if it was suggesting going to a lower altitude as you would offset or perhaps lose all gains.

    • @RobinBriones86
      @RobinBriones86 Год назад +25

      They said that just changing altitudes by a small fraction, they will get rid of contrails. Some cases they might go to higher altitudes.

    • @mwongerakarambu4912
      @mwongerakarambu4912 Год назад +5

      and this is definitely being considered: airlines really dont want to burn more fuel than they have to as they pay for it, they dont pay for contrail creation (yet?)
      But remember it is only a small fraction of flights needing a (relatively) small change in altitude. The fuel burn increase on the flight may be 1-5%, but on a fleet average it would be fractions of a percent - to decrease 30 to 50% of the impact!!
      There are few things we can do that provide this much reduction in warming at so little cost, this even beats swapping gas heating for a heat pump!

      This is probably a better solution than what Google proposed. It can be detected using a bunch of sensors. Like a catalytic converter for cars, a similar device can be used to eliminate the contrails by processing the exhaust before it is ejected.

    • @SteveLEKORodrigue
      @SteveLEKORodrigue Год назад +1

      @@varughstan: Probably complementary. Some routes could be "predefined" with AI, but fine-tuned in flight with the sensor data. The advantage of an off-plane solution is that it helps any plane (no need to retrofit the sensors).
      But, I totally agree the best solution would be to have onboard sensors similar to "lane detection in modern cars". The pilots would be informed of contrail generation/presence as it happens to act (or not) upon it.

    This entire video rests on the idea that contrails block energy from escaping at night. How are they going to redirect flight altitudes when the humidity data is collected during daylight? Humidity doesn't stay in the same place. Also, the reduced efficiency of flying at inappropriate altitudes means more fuel is burned in order to make this happen. More pollution. Also, contrails are condensation trails. A byproduct of burning jet fuel, just like with gasoline, is water... Literal clouds, which block sunlight and bounce it back out into space. Less contrails means more light gets through and is absorbed on the surface. The overwhelming majority of flights are in the daytime, which makes this theoretical nighttime fix only arguably beneficial. I also wish they would go into some detail about what environmental impact they're talking about in relation to contrails and how a purely subjective number for a generic term can land firmly on 37%. This is so stupid it's mildly offensive. They should also be a new law in philosophy that states the more irrelevant stock science footage someone sticks in a "scientific progress" video, the more you can be sure that it's bullcrap.

    This video explains very well the problem but it doesn´t explain the solution. They say CO2 emissions represent 56% and contrail about 35% of the total global warming contributions. What Google is not saying is that flights today are optimized to reduce CO2 emissions. This means avoiding strong headwinds or flying close to strong tailwinds plus reducing the consumption based on outside temperature. Avoiding contrails is easy but it will come always at a cost of CO2. Since CO2 weights more than contrails, I just don´t know how this whole project can succeed.
    In the event that contrails can be avoided without compromising the CO2 emissions or efficiency of the overall route, the economical question remains unanswered. This would have a negative impact on the overall end price passengers pay. Who would be the first avoiding contrails?

    • @Rstudio44521
      @Rstudio44521 10 месяцев назад +2

      @pi3080 they explain this on their site, in their test with American Airlines they saw a 54% reduction in contrails but a 2% increase in CO2, which would translate to a 0.3% increase when scaled across the entire fleet.
      So it seems worth it.

In my opinion, knowing exactly if this is true would be the absolute first step to go beyond. If we´re not 100% about the problem, the solution will certainly be wrong.

      @@bebaaliciacreations woah what a coincidence
      I just saw you twice in one day (within minutes)
      First in Ed's post and now here.
      Power to you Beba!
      maybe it's not that big a deal
      but I am sitting here just amazed!
      It makes the world feel small
      I'll say "power to you" whenever I see you again
      (here's hoping destiny will make us cross eachother again)
      But first, I'll go back and write "power to you" there!

      This is a SCAM. Google is a SCAM. Climate Agenda is a SCAM. The United Nations is not your friend.
