Try shopping in Puntaneous!!! Walk with the Ticos and emerge into their daily life. I worked in El Roble, I was the construction super at the Fiesta resort and Casino's new additions---I had 100 Ticos working for me, along with an interpreter and 2 foremen. The Fiesta Resort is now Double Tree Resort. I really got to feel the real CR and made many friends. I was asked to stay and build CR, but had other committments---my wife was very disappointed--she was hoping to live in CR and enjoying the climate and people. Loved the Ticos!!!

@@zoewilliamson_costarica The Ticos are outstanding people, very savy, and very self sustaining. I often wonder how life would have turned out had I accepted their offer. I was offered a small villa with housekeeper for only $600/mth (1994 money)---very tempting. My biggest problem was my employer from CT, who turned out to be a very sketchy person. The person paying my salary was from Germany, but not accessable---could have been a game changer if he was more in volved with the construction. Just to be clear, I was recruited by the CT contractor to revive the project, his original foreman managed to upset the Ticos to the point where the project was in trouble of failing. I brought it back to a successful completion. Felt good, and that is why I was asked to stay and keep building.

5:28 i think the biggest mall in Costa Rica is possibly City Mall (located in the Alajuela province veryy close to the Juan Santamaria Airport), next i think is Mall Multiplaza (located in Escazú, San Jose) then Oxygeno (located in the Heredia province) and in fourth place Mall Paseo de las Flores (also located in the Heredia province)

ESCAZU is "gringo-landia" to Ticos, due to the throngs of American expats who have moved there. It has ALL the amenities that typical Americans expect - shopping, fine restaurants, nice apartment /condo rentals & sales, and relatively safe streets. IF you desire "city life", then Escazu is for you - IF you have the $$$ to afford it. HOWEVER, if you want the REAL Costa Rica, then you should avoid the San Jose metro area !

    • @zoewilliamson_costarica

@@jjeniece Not at night - and not if you look like a typical Gringo tourist. There's really not much to see in San Jose anyhow. The real beauty of Costa Rica is in the country. As a native born Tica, I find San Jose clogged with traffic, polluted with diesel exhaust, and lacking any real attraction.

What do you mean "if you want the REAL Costa Rica, then avoid San José"? That's a really mistaken statement.
San José is full of world class museums, great gastronomy, parks, botanical gardens and many more.
On the other hand, Costa Rican culture in mostly based on the Great Metropolitan Area lifestyle, not Guanacaste nor Caribbean, but mostly Josefino Lifestyle.

Love your videos! I have a question not related to this video but hard to find an answer to when you moved to Costa Rica - how did you arrange transport for all your luggage? I will be moving in Nov with 2 kids, 13 pieces of luggage, a surfboard, and a bike and honestly, I do not know how to arrange it logistically - it is hard to find a car big enough to rent (it is going to be around 500kg of load!), prices are also really expensive, same with a taxi. I can't even imagine how to load it onto a car while waiting with a kid and one of them decide to go to the loo lol. Can you recommend a reliable private rental maybe? I have read some horror stories about rental companies and scams.

Hi there! Thank you so much! In episode 2 of my videos you will see all the luggage we took with us (2 suitcases each, carry on bags, and a MASSIVE surf board). We also ended up shipping 2 palettes of items using a shipping company as well and that arrived about 1 month later after arriving in Costa Rica (arrival shown in episode 7). As far as transportation with getting our luggage from the airport to the hotel, we ended up using a shuttle bus that was included with our hotel, so the arrangement was easy and trustworthy.
I will ask my mom to see if she has any contacts for someone who has a good price for a shuttle bus/ van sort of situation. We moved from Nosara to more of the southern zone of CR and I remembered that we had a great driver/company for a good price. As soon as I find out who they are, I will let you know:)
And congrats with your upcoming move to CR! If you need any contacts at all to help make your move smoother, feel free to reach out:) This includes our shipping company we used, realtors, travel agent, attorney, ect. I'm happy to help:)

Escazu is the southern California of Costa Rica. Very rude people. I avoid like it was the bubonic plague.
And MultiPlaza is NOT the only shopping mall in Costa Rica. There is City Mall in Alajuela (next to the airport), Paceo de las Flores in Heredia, Oxigeno in Heredia. and Lincoln Plaza in Moravia. Of all these MultiPlaza and Avenida de Escazu are the least desirable.
And Price Smart (PSMT) and Costco (COST) are two distinctly separate corporations. However, Price Smart does buy some Kirkland product from Costco.

This is actually not even close to be the best mall in CR, you really have go to "Oxígeno" in Heredia or "City Mall" in Alajuela, there are multiple malls in Costa Rica because for some reason we spend a lot of time in the malls because there is a lot of really cool things to do in the Costa Rican malls, they are not only for shopping here, btw Heredia and Alajuela are really close to San José so you might go to see the real best malls in the country! You can definitely do a whole video in "Oxígeno" Heredia that's probably the coolest mall in the country!

@@zoewilliamson_costarica Nope ... you see, you didn't understand ... when you are in Costa Rica - you are in America ... when you travel from North America to Central America ... you never leave America, you are still in America. it should be obvious, America is a continent, not a country - get it straight.

Zoe is completely right. Costa Rica is in Central America, which is a region of North America. That is very different from “America“. The largest country (by far) in both North and South America is Canada. Just for fun, find a Canadian and refer to them as American. Canadians are North Americans, but not Americans. Big difference. Zoe does understand and she is 100% correct on this issue.

You don't even know what you're saying .. Just be clear if your explanation is geography or history? The US educational system 🤷 So your explanation of what America is? is it based on where is it And what is around ?😂 That means that u doesn't even know what the name means or where it comes from.
