The plant words of encouragement and positive vibes is what I notice most in your videos. The writing on the bins was a nice touch, I remember the plant tags from before. If you haven't picked for the cutting yet I'd like to have a chance and I look forward to many more videos
Hey, thanks for the message! I read a book by Masaru Emoto and it was quite profound on how water is affected by energy from l external language and writing. and it just feels good to put words of affirmation on my plants
@@Philsfigs the way you broke that down so simply answers a lot of questions and eliminates head scratching! again great educational video that helps us all out here in our gardening quests.
Great demonstration, always love your video and you have a down to earth personality. I would love to a cutting of the NSDC variety. I have about 20+ varieties that I’m trying to grow in foggy San Francisco. I’m experimenting different varieties to see which ones do well in our weather. It’s interesting to find out how figs look so different when they are grown in different climates. I do look forward for more videos now that you make more of them in RUclips. Thank you as always.
Thank you for the support! Hope your growing season is going well! I have family in the Bay Area and there are some good sized fig trees up that way. Yes, Figs can look so different from climate to climate. Cheers, Phil
Congrats on your fig trees! Let’s help those fig trees thrive. You still have some winter ahead of you up there. You may want to keep them in pots. I had trees I kept in pots when I lived in Boston. I remember there were some big ones around town where people wrapped, buried, or kept on pots on wheels to survive winters. Welcome to the world of figs and reach out with any questions!
Hi Phil! Your RUclips channel and instagram account have been a great resource for me. Oh, and NSDC has been on my bucket list for a while so hearing you have one to give away made me jump on here and try my luck! 🍀
Hey Phil, love the channel! This will be my second season with 4 store bought trees and first season rooting cuttings. So far out of 20 cuttings all but two have rooted but are showing signs of life with very small buds. Gotta say starting with cuttings is definitely next level and almost an addiction! Lol. I’ve even gone as far as fig tree hunting and asking if anyone can spare a couple of cuttings off their personal trees. lol. Supper happy with that as I was able to score some cuttings from a woman that had a 30 year old tree her husband brought from the Azores and the information I got was that it’s a green flesh with red pulp fig, she even sent me off with a jar of her homemade fig jam…awesome! The woman’s husband has since passed so she didn’t have a name for it except possibly an Azores White. I would love the NSDC cutting to possibly add to my collection! Either way love what you do 🍻
Welcome to the fig community haha! Wonderful news on the success with your two cuttings! Propagating figs gets a little easier every time you do it so keep at it. The best way to find cuttings is to find huge trees people will share with you! I would love to see some pics of that azores white someday. That’s really cool! Thank you for the kind words!!!
Look forward to your Friday broadcast. Always informative and entertaining. So, if I understand you correctly, the cuttings I have rooted this winter and have up-potted to one gallon pot, I should let them root out in these pots until next spring before potting into a larger pot or in the ground? Thanks.
Yep you can keep them in their one gallon pots for awhile as a general rule of thumb. BUT there are exceptions, if you find one is really struggling to grow or is not doing well because there are roots everywhere it may be time to uppot it. But that may be an exception. Make sense? Feel out the fig and see if roots are coming out the bottom etc. Thank you for the kind words!
I'm so glad! I’ve wrapped up cutting sales for the season but I will have trees available for shipping at the end of April / beginning of May. Thanks again for the mid words
Looks like I'm a little late to the party but I'd love any cutting as well. Everybody wants cuttings....lol. Good video as always Phil with some good tips for up potting figs. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Phil! Thanks for another great video. What happens to the buds If the tree is budding and a freeze happens? FYI, I just ordered two cuttings, Peters Honey and Col de Dame Noir. Can't wait to get them rooted. 😊
If it’s budding it could potentially have dieback which is less than ideal. This is because of the sap flow and leaf growth - the tree thinks it’s spring and is pushing our growth. You’ll want to do your best to keep it from freezing
Hi...i have a question! I have several fig trees that have long, blank trunks then branches out nicely up over my head!...but they are so tall. Why dont i see that with the fig community? Im zone 8b in Washington state. Also have never been able to propagate the stems and yes im doing it right. Well maybe they will grow this time using heat mats.... UPDATE!!! I GOT BUDS ..GREEN LEAVES! THE HEAT MAT IS THE THING!
Nice, you have buds and green leaves!!! Sweet! Heat mats are worth every penny! You don’t see trees that you have described that often. Most figs here ok the east coast are more bushy in shape. I may need to see a pic of what you’re describing sounds interesting and very cool!
I max out around the 15-20 gallon containers but I only have a few larger and they live in those even larger ones like they would in the ground. I think the 15 gal is a nice final size because it's still manageable, but allows your figs to get relatively large
Top 5 figs wow it's always fun to do this: 1. Black Madeira / Figo Preto 2. Col de Dame Blanc /Gris / Noir / 3. Smith 4. White Madeira #1 5. Salce Honorable mention varieties: 1. LSU Strawberry 2. Campaniere 3. Socorro Black 4. Ponte Tresa 5. I-258 / Genovese Nero AF 6. Paradiso Giovanni 7. Bourjasotte Gris 8. Black Tuscan 9. Rigato de Salento 10. Hative D'Argentueil 11. Troiano Calabrese
Hey Phil, looks like the Godfather took a hit this year lol. I’d love a cutting sir. If you have a Ronde De Bordeaux cutting, I’d love to purchase one.
Haha it did. It will recover though! Ronde de Bordeaux also took a massive hit haha but hopefully I’ll have some of my Own cuttings rooted soon and will make those available. Thank you!
Yep I have to start posting the blog. I’m more involved with my newsletter that is sent out every few months. if your interested drop your email I’m overdue for a post. Thank you !!!

I am a newbie to the fig world here in southern Maine and bought 4 figs and am working overtime to pay for them.

Oof more snow! Hopefully it melts quickly for ya, spring is around the corner!
Yes!! I definitely want to be in the running!
Great tips and recap. Would love the opportunity to get a cutting. Our new rooting process has been very successful thus far, only a few more to go.
Oh yea! Congrats on the new successful rooting method!

Ah! Yea I already have. Keep tuned in haha I’ll always be happy to send out some cuttings in the future
How long does it take to up-pot to each larger size? Usually about a year for each up-pot?
Yep usually a year - if they’re really big pots (15gal+) sometimes you can get away with every other year
Who said free fig cutting? 🤲🌳
Haha
I want up pot too. I dont want to own all the pots.
I hear ya!
Is the 7 gallon pot about the biggest one you go with(generally)? or 10+ pretty common?
