More Information:
Chex Mix is a type of American snack mix the includes little chex cereal pieces, putting together sweet & savoury bites to create a popular little mix to snack on. We don't have these at all in Ireland, so of course we decided to get our Irish People in to see what they thought.

As soon as I saw Chex mix, I knew someone would ask for beer. Thank you Dermot. You never let me down.
"Dermot wanted beer with it". A likely story. Next you'll be telling me the sky is blue and water is wet.
@@andyb1653 Pure crazy talk!
he's got a problem.
LEGIT!
Or weed ;)
Seriously, where ARE the beers?
Originally, Chex mix was something you made at home, frying the cereal and other snacks in butter and salt (and whatever else) in a pan or the oven. Chex saw the popularity and began producing ready-made snack mix.
The same thing happened with Rice Krispy squares.
"I don't know what the heel of the shoe is but it's fucking lovely."
That sir is a garlic rye chip and the best part of chex mix and gardettos.
Not a big rye fan but those are the first things I grab when I see them in a mix.
I throw them out, they are the bits of shoe heels.
I read that as
"chex and ghettos"
Gardettos puts out a bag of nothing but the rye crisps! I think that would be a bit overwhelming, but I'm willing to try.
I’m an avid Chex Mix fan, but for some reason I’ve never really liked the rye chip. I’ll eat them, but I have to eat them mixed with other stuff. The bagel chip on the other hand though… I love that! I was so excited when they brought those back. The rye chips do carry the seasoning well, I will admit!
Lena and Dermot are obviously the only ones with working tastebuds xD
Meh. I don't remember the last time I saw anyone actually buying Chex Mix.
I bought some a week ago.
Jeremy C I bought some last week
Because homemade Chex Mix is SO much better!
@@jeremyc9593 I buy a bag a week.
We do have sweets ones. Muddie buddies. Cookies and cream, chocolate and peanutbutter, fudge, salted caramel
How did they miss sending the PB ones for Dermot?
I am just a mom doing the best I can we need to send them the Maddie buddies!
Those are my favorite
Salted caramel and cheddar are my favorite flavors
I could eat a whole bag of muddie buddies in one sitting and I'm not even ashamed of that.
All Chex Mix is good Chex Mix. Fight me on that.
Dermot and Lena know what's up!
Came down here to say the same.
The others have trash taste
Yassss!
For real. Chex is so good. All flavors. I feel like they are pretending most the times honestly.
But the Chex pieces are always the best.
You didnt give them the Turtle, Caramel, Chocolate, peanut or white chocolate powdered sugar ones?
Need Chex Mix Part 2 ASAP.
TnT FoX I’m watching this eating Turtle Chex Mix!
That turtle flavor one is why I don't fucking fit any of my pants.
Sriracha, Blue, and Fajita as well.
My favorite by far is the OG Chex mix, that doesn't mean I don't sway to cheesy, chocolatey, caramely, and spicy treats now and then. Variety is the spice of life. Thanks for the 100 up votes, let's hope for a part 2
You have to Send in different flavors to them
Hold up, somebody sent you Chex mix and didn't send you Muddie Buddies to finish them off with? Somebody failed America
Or turtle. Maybe they'll do the sweet versions sometime.
You went right to someone failed America... Lmao
Thiiiiiiiiiisss
If I could like this a million times I would. I was thinking that would be what they finished with when they asked for sweet.
tbh I think we need to hit the try channel with some MRE rations
I like how Dermot made fun of the weird brown pieces, and then immediately find out why it’s everyone’s favorite piece lol.
Johnny Fines it’s the only one I generally won’t eat. Lol
The crunchy dark rye pieces are my favorite...I wish the whole bag is full of them.

They make full bags of them.
Cpt Murica11 - thank you. I'll look for them.
"Would taste better in milk" what mad lad would say such a thing. Get him outta here
Exactly!!! Chex cereal by itself isn't really sweet, so why would you add savory spices to it and still say it needs milk?!?
everyone has different tastes but i agree it's an odd thing to want lol
Exactly 😂
I’m glad Dermot got to enjoy himself unreservedly for once
Dermot is right it's a bar snack, what's funny is a soccer mom took them home to the rug rats and kids love them!
Chex Mix might be found in some bar somewhere today, but it started as a party snack long before the first soccer mom appeared in America.
Why they didn't have the peanut butter one just for him idky but would have been hilarious
@@oneshotonekill2528 or even just the chocolate Chex Mix. I watched the whole video waiting for them to get to the chocolate ones and they never did. lol. Wasted their time without that reward at the end. Its the only one that actually makes sense to eat with milk.

Dermot and Lena were an absolutely adorable pairing. Good on you for just being huggably amusing.
remember you got to eat Chex mix by the handful not individually that's where you get the great flavor that's why it's called a mix
Yep, almost cringing while they were eating a piece at a time.
For real. Instructions for eating it are in the name.
Yah, right, it's your way or the highway- Trucker Kev. Mix doesn't imply every mouthful include one of each component, for if you don't have that ratio, you do not have a MIX, I think not. Like on every other issue, Trucker Kev is just blowin' exhaust smoke.
@@larrydaniels6532 2 years later you should read the comments. There are tons of people saying you eat it by the handful.
It started as something people would make for parties, I think back in the 70's. It's way better when made from scratch
The"Old Folks" would mix this up when I was little, 1960-ish, whenever they got together for cards. We all thought it was way salty. Now I get it.
What I love is using that old recipe (with vegan worchestershire sauce), but using only the square cocktail size sliced loaf of deli pumpernickel, because those pieces are my favourite. I'd eat a whole bag of just those.
@@johnrotuno1077 Chex DID have a series of commercials dedicated to making your own mixtures. Literally had a flashback! Thanks for the reminder. 👍

Your phone must have changed *rye* to pumpernickel.
Those are the ones that go directly to into the garbage, they take up space that could occupied with edible pieces.

Irish people seem obsessed with disappointment, being disappointed and worrying about possibly being disappointed.
Oh we do that in Dorset too. It's a cultural memory / hangover from sumptuary laws
And when they're not disappointed, they're disappointed about that.
After what the British have done to them for 800 years you'd be too
Disappointment is deeply ingrained in our genetic make-up. We are a fatalistic bunch but shur we make the most of it..

The Bold Chex Mix is easily 50% of my teenage daughter's diet.
Bold is the best one all the others are obsolete.
Eric Burkheimer spicy has just the right amount of kick
Tara LeGates As the father of teen girls I support this comment 😂
Tara LeGates she has a great diet i approve
Tara LeGates If I weren’t broke and could actually afford to blow half my paycheck on snack foods, I’d _gladly_ eat a bag of bold Chex Mix every day for the rest of my life. Shit is like crack.
Nothing beats a fresh toasted/seasoned batch right out of the oven. My cousin makes a big batch every Christmas right before driving the family to visit. Strangely enough, he has trouble getting some of it through to us. And as several have mentioned already, you can’t eat it one or 2 bits at a time, it is the MIX that creates the great taste.
As an American here’s how we eat Chex Mix
original- while binge watching “The Walking Dead”
Cheddar- while drunk.
Honey BBQ - while drunk
Bold - while drunk.
😁
Also, grab a handful and eat the pieces TOGETHER, not one by one.
Finally Dermot proves he has a soul! And yes, they are made to be eaten with beer. But then again, what isn't?
Ber should just be a side dish that they have with everything on this channel.
I love Dermont his reactions are insanely funny....
@Nate Mauratt speak for yourself.
Hmmm.... Ms. Minnie's famous chocolate pie, from the movie, "The Help"?

Someone send them some Gardettos. Those are the best of the non-sugary 'cereal' snack mixes.

Oh, yeah. When they came out with a bag of just the rye chips, I was in heaven! Those are the best!
I don't like them as much as Chex.
Bingo! Gardettos is the best!
Yes definitely, especially for the rye crisps. Dermot would approve for sure.
The bold party blend one is my favorite
The rye crisps are the best things in any chex mix!
Dermot once again proving he is the best!!!
I love Lena's smile, and now i'm hungry for some Czechs.

That's what I said, we still use the recipe from the back of the box my grandma cut out in the 70s. Except now we add a cup of Cheez-its and a few tablespoons of siracha.
Homemade chex mix is so much better than the store bought version, plus you can add any ingredients that you choose.
Add Cheerios that's the best
@David Roberts ??
What are you talking about. Yes we have, home made is 1000X better.

Dermot and Lena were amazing. Love those 2 together.
I’m so used to Chex Mix that I forget they’re cereal too. I was very confused for a moment why they kept expecting them to be sweet.
Don't eat one piece at a time. It is best when you have several different textures and tastes in your mouth at once. If you only taste a pretzel, duh, it's going to be boring.

Pumpernickel :)
Who cares what it is it’s on the top of all pieces in the bag
Oh those are the things that cut the roof of my mouth when i don't pay attention. 😂
In 1952 Life magazine featured a recipe for Chex party mix. It was fairly popular back then to make your own snacks from breakfast cereals thanks to Boy Scouts moms, Little League moms and the like. It wasn't until 1985 that a pre-made, pre-packaged version was made.
Watching Irish people discover the amazing thing that is the little rye crisps in Chex mix is wonderful. Occasionally at a random gas station I find the little limited edition packs they do where it’s just the rye crisps and it makes me so happy.

The Cheddar is my go-to flavor but I really like the Sweet and Salty ones. They also make a Turtle flavor that's covered in chocolate and caramel. That one is so good it's only for special occasions.

You+are = you're your = possessive. You're welcome.
My grandma, who just turned 84, use to make the best chex mix!! Sadly she can't make it anymore due to her age. But it will forever be one of my fondest memories of her!
The pre-made bags have nothing on home made chex mix.

Lena is just adorable. She always seems to be a bundle of energy and her being paired with Dermot a lot lately is just terrific stuff. If I ever make it out to Ireland I'd love to have a pint with any of the crew but Lena just seems like someone you can get drunk with and just have a grand ole time :D
Does this guy work for the dairy institute or something? Let go of the milk idea already
I kept wondering "You CAN taste the salt in there, right? That's not sugar. WHY DO YOU WANT SALTY MIXED WITH MILK?!?!?"
@ffeelix …..chex mix is based on several different cereals.... literally, the corn chex and rice chex and wheat chex were cereals first. The mix recipe came later. It therefore totally makes sense to think of milk.
@@laertesindeed Except that the Chex Mix isn't cereal any more. It's become a salty snack. You don't mix milk with stuff that's salty. Ewwwww.

The ones that look like brown leather are the pumpernickel bread ones, those are by far my favorite. They need to try plain chex cereal to understand. We have potatoes, we are just bored with them. They've only made potato chips since 1853 because a customer wanted crisper fries. He kept making them thinner and thinner until you couldn't even put a fork in them. They became to be known as the Saratoga chips or potato crunchers. My English teacher had stupid useless facts as a Senior in High school. Another I remember is the plastic hard ends for ease of lacing shoes, of a shoe lace are called an Aglet. Can't believe I remember this sh*t, about all I remember from High school 28 years later.
I learned about the aglet from watching Justice League Unlimited. Their true purpose is sinister.

I love when Dermot brings his grandkids!
Chex mix started as a recipe that was an ad in a women's magazine in the 1950s and later on the back of the boxes of cereal. The orginal flavor started out that way.
It was so popular, sometime in the 1980s Chex started making it themselves and they made up the other flavors, ripping off potato chip flavors.
It was meant as basically a last minute party snack.
Corm,Wheat and Rice Chex Mixed with Peanuts (Sorry Dermot!),Pretzels and Worstetshire Sauce with Butter sauce.
Is that a home version? My grandma makes similar but sometimes she slips in almonds or pecans. I love chex mix but home versions are always better
We go off of the OG recipe from the back of the box from the 60s but replace half the pretzels with Cheez-its and add a little siracha to the sauce. And of course you have to make it every Christmas and eat it while watching the Charlie Brown special.
my family recipe did not use all 3 chex, but had cheerios, as a kid I would but a pretzel stick through a cheerio like a little set of wheels or barbells
Does Dermot dislike peanuts, or just peanut butter?
Dermot's reaction when the bag was taken away was priceless
Chex mix started in the 50s and 60s. You would make your own by mixing Rice Chex, Corn Chex, and Wheat Chex with pretzel stix and peanuts. You would melt butter and add seasoning. Toss them in the butter and spread them on a cookie sheet and bake for like 12 minutes. Put it in a bowl and serve especially during card or game nights. Later on the cereal started packaging their own. They added the rye crackers and other tidbits and no peanuts( because of allergies). For years you could only get the original savory but now there are all kinds of flavors including some sweet but I prefer to still make my own. The recipe is still on the side of the cereal boxes.Since so many of our cereals are surgery sweet these are one of the few you could make savory which was quite something in the 60s. We use cereal for lots of things. I have coated chicken in a mix of flour and crushed corn flakes then fried it. We also used to make our own Rice Krispies treats by melting marshmallows and butter then adding Rice Krispies and spreading them in a butter coated glass baking dish and letting it cool. Cut into squares. We do strange things with out foods over here.
Love you guys!! “We’ll send America some potatoes 🥔 “. Hahaha!! Laughed till I cried 🤣😆😂. Thanks again

Dermot and Lena are a great combo to be paired together
Hey everyone. I've been loving your "Irish people try" videos.
Your Chex Mix comments were all pretty much right on the point.
Chex is indeed a breakfast cereal, intended to be eaten with milk. Then about thirty years ago, the company came up with recipes where you could take the cereal (several different flavors), add seasonings and nuts and pretzels, and make it into a savory party snack. A few years later, the company came out with their line of bagged snack mixes. Yes, they are good with a pint. And yes, I've also often been underwhelmed by the taste. And by the textures.
Also, I've seen it mentioned in other comments...
The sweet snack mixes taste better.
Check your Chex Mix dates-way before 30 years.
That's the point, Larry.
I'm simply trying to give these good people a general idea where this snack line came from, not write a complete and verifiable wiki page.
But if you feel so inclined, please feel free to write up the detailed history of Chex Mix.
In the 60's, the cereal companies seemed to find alternative ways to use their products. Kelloggs' added Rice Krispies to marshmellow cream. They Crushed Cornflakes up as a coating for baked meats [Chicken, pork chops]. It would give you the crunch of frying, but with less fat. Oh there was bar cookie recipe that combined peanut butter and corn syrup [golden syrup] in a pot and cook to 'soft ball' stage. Stir in the corn flakes and coat them, then pour into a cake pan, while still hot, put chocolate chips on top until melted and smooth them over the top. My mom would use whatever cereal we had at the end of the month to make this one. And she wasn't afraid to grab every single near empty box of cereal and mix them all up, but she learned really quickly we wouldn't eat that conglomeration for breakfast... just in that cookie recipe.
Chex Mix was General Mills first foray into this genre, but originally YOU BAKED THIS AT HOME. It was a blend of Chex cereals [corn, rice and wheat], pretzles, peanuts, etc I saw some pretzle chips and melba toast in the vid. Mix cooking oil, salt, onion and garlic powder, and worcestershire sauce. Drizzled over the cereal in a roasting pan, and begin slowling roasting the cereal, periodically stirring it to get all the pieces coated in the oil, and bake to a crispy golden brown. It was the party favorite, because you could make this HUGE bucket of snacks, for very little money. It had a something that everyone liked.
Humans being humans, began to try other flavors and then ventured into the Sweet concept. As others have mentioned there is the Muddie Buddies: melted chocolate stirred into the cereal, until all the chocolate has been absorbed by the cereal. Then toss in icing sugar to coat them, and dry out the surface, so the won't stick together. The same process is done with peanut butter.
The Cheddar Cheese is the nasty powdered stuff that is nothing but chemical soup with yellow food coloring.
The "muddy buddies" is much better with Crispix than Chex, we always called it puppy chow but it has many names.
@@andrewthezeppo and at Christmas it's called Reindeer Chow.
Crispix is made by Kelloggs; and Chex is by General Mills.
I don't doubt folks would prefer Crispix, Kelloggs is still adding lots of hidden sugars and MSG.
@@Objective-Observer I think it's more the shape, the chex get a big bogged down in the peanut butter and the Crispix stay lighter and crunchier
