i love how so many "fans" of bands are always so nit-picky and whiny when it comes to live performances. imo, this is a very cool version of "float on", because they're putting actual emotion and improv into this performance
they certainly can play live performances with each one so unique that you don't know what to expect.....so great! his bad singing is part of why they rock..i dig them!!!
Anyone who doesn't like this version probably also doesn't appreciate the older Modest Mouse. Cause really, that twangy, messy, but funky sound is what they're all about. I like it .. it's their raw take on such a radioized single.
it was a little rough in the first half, but after that mellow instrumental section, the blue lights come up and they are miraculously in time and roughly in tune with each other. the last refrain is a joy to watch. so i'm not convinced that all the sloppy parts were intentional. i had fun seeing them back in the day, but some shows were rough...but they are a hell of a live act now...just saw them at the aragon last night- tight set despite the acoustics!
@Willro91 The part the lead singer sings in the chorus is in the studio version, it just isn't nearly as prominent as the back-up vocals are. If you listen to the performance of this they did that aired on pbs, you can listen to both parts of the chorus a lot more clearly.
Modest Mouse is a very hard band to emulate the album versions of songs, Modest Mouse does a lot of heavy fx overlays in their songs. It also has a lot to do with the way the mix their songs. Believe me, I have tried to emulate their sound from the album versions with my band and it is nigh impossible. Too much going on.
+hworkdedication You mean the guitar sounds? They do that in the original song too, it's just them with the guitar and yes I know, THIS SONG IS FUCKING AMAZING.
Everyone says this is their big sellout song. It's a great song, and just because they got popular isn't a bad thing. I have every single one of their CDs and listen to all of them all day every day and have been for 4 years just because of this song. The sellout thing only applies if they change to get popular, which they didn't. Good for Brock, he had a tough life, but worked hard and hit it big. Which we'd all like to do. Oh and this live version is great.
i used to think tht but then wen u think more about it if they sound the same live wat would b the point of goin to see them!! live u get a diff version like a stripped back or diff octive style jus lil differences tht make u like the music more an in diff ways! if u wanna hear the song as it is on the album listen to the album!
@tetrisclock Me too. My g/f has listened to modest mouse for years and I always hated them. Recently i started to like them but when i first heard float on i thought these guys sucked! They are now one of my favorites!
i found it enjoyable. at least their music is real. it is only what they do. no effects, no voice editing, their music is raw and uneffected. thats why i like it
not sure if that's an explaination for the performance but i was even pissed at jimmy kimmel when i heard the intro. "they started 10 years ago and now they have a hit song."
This is one of those bands that is exponentially better live than in a recording studio. I don't own any of their albums but I'd love to see them live.
voltmat, very intellectual answer, thanks. If you want to call this "band" indie, fine. But the truth remains that Marr did something unbelievably ill-advised, if he wanted to, should've started a band of his own, this is not music compared to Smiths, its not and you need to accept it
yes yes i am aware, also Marr created the band The Electronic and contributed to the band The The. However, none of these are stable and he tried to sing in the Healers, he should've gotten a decent vocalist and keep the old setup. Anyway, you can have your opinion, however, if not for the Smiths, bands like modest mouse wouldn't even exist

"Dont worry even if things end a bit to heavy. We'll all float on alright." Love these guys.
hate when people say "it's out of tune" shit!!! they just don't undertand the magnificent floating tremolo....fuckin' like it!
Me too
I dont think you guys can grasp the concept of how hard this song is to get close to the Studio version of it
they certainly can play live performances with each one so unique that you don't know what to expect.....so great! his bad singing is part of why they rock..i dig them!!!
I love this song so much. =)
I remember when their albums use to sound as raw as this. Beautiful
Love this performance
By far the best indie band ever they will float on forever i hope
Still gold all these years later.
I Wasn’t much of a Kimmel Show fan, but I made sure to watch this performance! Hard to believe it was 17 years ago.
This was amazing.
i love the way they play the song , so diferent from the original version, but still awesome
i love this song so much
if you dont like this im surprised you even like modest mouse. its that raw sound that keeps me coming back. this is modest mouse at their best
ooooh, such a great live perfomance. Im thnkn...... Straight to favorites
how does he get his guitar to sound like that
(lead singer/guitarist)
Probably distorsion and being a bit out of tune
Anyone who doesn't like this version probably also doesn't appreciate the older Modest Mouse. Cause really, that twangy, messy, but funky sound is what they're all about. I like it .. it's their raw take on such a radioized single.

Listen to this song everyday.
Amazing performance, cool guitar tune. Good singer a great song.
Its raw and its fkn great.
Since it's so raw, it sounds more like their older stuff, as it should have sounded in the first place.

I really like this version.
Good times
the sound wicked good like the real song even when there live, and this is a good song
brilliant. just saw them at connect festival in scotland. what a show. pity aboot all the rain
It sounds more like an old modest mouse song then a new one. which is a good thing. their old stuff still kills
I like this a lot... more than the original.
very good man!!!
Wow fantastic
exactly. that is there sound
~~~~ AND WE'LL ALL FLOAT ON ~~~~~~
Man, those people in front are so still during such an amazing performance of this song.
when/where was that?
That guitar rif could be a hiphop beat.
omj i lov itt
AWESSSSSOME! these guys rule....i dont care what anyone else says.....they are AWESOOOOOME!~=~=~=~
The random wale sounds lmfao cracks me up
+hworkdedication You mean the guitar sounds? They do that in the original song too, it's just them with the guitar and yes I know, THIS SONG IS FUCKING AMAZING.
This version is quite better than others live I've seen..
nice cover dude
you really haven't listened to modest mouse have you
rip
That sounded great to me.
Classic........love this shit
i sorta like this live version better cuz u can hear each guitar better and it seems just alot less cluttered.
even better live
fucking awesome
damn that guy can sing
The demo for this song was released before Franz had had the Take me out demo released.
@ykoshy that's funny since Heath directed a Modest Mouse music video
Look at him bark away!
i used to think tht but then wen u think more about it if they sound the same live wat would b the point of goin to see them!! live u get a diff version like a stripped back or diff octive style jus lil differences tht make u like the music more an in diff ways! if u wanna hear the song as it is on the album listen to the album!
@msammas That's funny because I absolutely adore Modest Mouse as well as Phoenix. Just shows people can like a range of music... :)
Same. Eight years later. Hope your still alive. Who knows?
dann g. is my pal...
*does research* of course i knew johnny was not on board at this point *cough cough*.
i love isaac brock!!!!!!!!!!
damn it, I'm dead.
how could you think he killed it? this is probably 300 times better than the album version
@tetrisclock Me too. My g/f has listened to modest mouse for years and I always hated them. Recently i started to like them but when i first heard float on i thought these guys sucked! They are now one of my favorites!
The parts that don't sound right to people are truly on purpose, Isaac loves mixing everything up!
i found it enjoyable. at least their music is real. it is only what they do. no effects, no voice editing, their music is raw and uneffected. thats why i like it
Wheres there second drummer?
Easily agreed, there older stuff was the best, but there new album is pretty outstanding.
Hmmm... I wouldn't say emo. I like this song, it's got a good flow to it.
Isaac Brock is a god among men.. (so are the rest of the band of course)
why are they distuned? :(
nah this is about three years too early to have marr in there, the second guitarist with isaac brock is dan gallucci
well this was GREAT...ISAAC is not a bad singer but the chorus he killed!!
Exactly what I'm trying to say....look at my comment on the top of the comments for this video.
not sure if that's an explaination for the performance but i was even pissed at jimmy kimmel when i heard the intro. "they started 10 years ago and now they have a hit song."
hmm, interesting
nice vibe to it
even though it sounded different
I can guess what he said at 2:30
This moment= the beginning of the end.
this wasnt released 8 years ago
1:47 dying whale
Viperzsx what?
@@heckdang2148 That guy can't even do a simplest job done alright, here 1:47
I like the live version from 2003 much better.
This is one of those bands that is exponentially better live than in a recording studio. I don't own any of their albums but I'd love to see them live.
If any of you guys are attempting to compare Smiths and MM, further discussion is futile
i actually tried it again but i used distortion and it worked
oh! okay sorry.
let me have another shot at this
Take me out's riff really sounds like this
So johhny marr made this riff?
No, this song was written and released many years before Johnny played with the band
hells yeah
your right
mainstream stuff sucks!
honestly I didn't think anything into it. I don't think he would have any reason to insult them purposely.
3 guitarists with johnny on board? oh the modesty.
I seriously Hated this band when I first heard them, but MM grew on me.
The lead singer sounds like he has downs at times, but I still like the band.
TV isn't live.
@felixcorrea89 lmao! you must not be a true modest mouse fan to not understand it..
voltmat, very intellectual answer, thanks. If you want to call this "band" indie, fine. But the truth remains that Marr did something unbelievably ill-advised, if he wanted to, should've started a band of his own, this is not music compared to Smiths, its not and you need to accept it
Yeah Issac isn't fat, and Modest Mouse doesn't move around a lot. That's just how they play, but I like it better that way.
woooow one of the most oldest videos uploaded to yt that i've seen
haha... nice "Float On" version.
Wait where did a dis on primus come from, they arent even close to emo. Rock on Les.
"our" standard for correct spelling appears to have fallen as well..
